In August, tropical cyclone Lane wrought huge damage in the US; it was quickly followed by Hurricane Florence. Most tropical cyclones - the word is used interchangeably with "hurricanes" - of this kind originate in the North Atlantic Ocean, where they're fuelled by the warm Gulf Stream.
