Heart-broken Girl - Portrait

A portrait painting or drawing is a depiction of the image of a particular person or animal. Earlier portraits were drawn while the subject was made to sit for hours. Now artists can work from a photograph.

Artists use different mediums to make portraits. Whether its graphite, oil colors, watercolors, oil pastels anything. Portraits don’t always have to look realistic. Every artist has a different style. They can either create features in a detailed way or with rough brush strokes only.

In some portraits, we see some artworks kept diligently unfinished. This is the way of doing the work of some artists. Viewers fill the gap by imagination. Portraits can be made in full person or just the head or the combination of between.

Artists keep certain things in mind while making a portrait like the facial expressions of the subject, their gestures and poses, their clothing, the settings and the surroundings etc.

Overall, a strong portrait captivates the viewers. It can function as a biography- telling the story of the subject’s life.

Here I have drawn a portrait of a young lady from Europe. She seems to be in some thoughts and looking a little sad. I have used 3h graphite pencil for the basic rough sketch. Then I used 3b and 6 b pencil to darken some parts of it.

Thanks and have a nice day ahead
