New on Sports Illustrated: SEC Alters Schedule as Programs Deal With COVID-19 Postponements
The SEC has moved around six games following the postponements of the Vanderbilt-Missouri and Florida-LSU games that were originally scheduled for Oct. 17.
On Friday, the SEC announced a bevy of changes to the conference's schedule after the postponement of two games that were originally slated for Oct. 17.
The postponements of the Vanderbilt-Missouri and Florida-LSU games that were supposed to be played on Saturday necessitated a re-shuffling of the deck. The changes are as follows:
- Vanderbilt at Missouri: Moved from Oct. 17 to Dec. 12. Time and network are TBD
- LSU at Florida: Moved from Oct. 17 to Dec. 12. Time and network are TBD
- South Carolina at LSU: Remains on Oct. 24, changes time to 7 p.m. ET on ESPN
- Georgia at Kentucky: Moves from Oct. 24 to Oct. 31 at 12 p.m. ET on SEC Network
- Missouri at Florida: Moves from Oct. 24 to Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m. ET on SEC Network Alternate
- Kentucky at Missouri: Moves from Oct. 31 to Oct. 24 at 4 p.m. ET on SEC Network
The announcement comes on the same day the SEC reportedly fined three schools—Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Tennessee—for failing to adhere to the conference's COVID-19 protocols. Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork confirmed the Aggies' fine to Sports Illustrated's Ross Dellenger, while sources said Ole Miss and Tennessee were also disciplined.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey had previously sent a memo to schools last week saying their conference revenue distribution would be docked $100,000 for each week that they did not follow the protocols.
"Do not relax—and do not let those around you relax—because of a few weeks of success," Sankey reportedly wrote in the memo.

New on Sports Illustrated: Deion Sanders's Contract: Jackson State to Pay 'Coach Prime' $300,000 Salary With Season-Ticket Sales Incentives
Deion Sanders’s contract with Jackson State is a four-year, $1.2 million deal that includes an automatic extension for an eight-win season.
Deion Sanders’s contract with Jackson State is a four-year, $1.2 million deal that includes at least $120,000 in annual performance incentives and an automatic extension for an eight-win season.
The former NFL star cornerback and Hall of Famer was announced last month as the new coach at the SWAC school in Mississippi, landing his first college job in a stunning move that took America by storm. Sports Illustrated obtained his contract through a public records request.
Sanders, 53, is to be paid an annual salary of $300,000 as part of a contract that begins Dec. 1 of this year and runs to Dec. 15, 2024. Before taking over at JSU, Sanders is completing his job as the offensive coordinator of the Dallas-area Trinity Christian Academy, where his son is a highly recruited starting quarterback.
The university would owe Sanders the full, remaining amount of his contract if they fire him within the first year of his employment. After Dec. 15, 2021, Jackson State could fire Sanders for a price tag of $300,000. If Sanders were to leave JSU, he’d owe the school 50% of his remaining salary.
Sanders’ salary is on par with other FCS head coaches, but it would put him last among FBS public school coaches. However, the contract is loaded with incentives. He receives $25,000 for each win over an FBS team, gets $10,000 for a SWAC division title and $30,000 for a conference championship. If his team reaches the Celebration Bowl—a season-ending game pitting the SWAC and MEAC champion—he’d receive $50,000 for a bowl win.
Sanders can also get bonuses for ticket sales. If a game draws more than 30,000 fans, he gets 10% of all sales after the 30,000. He receives 10% of all season ticket revenue after the first 10,000 are purchased. If JSU changes conferences, he gets $100,000.
There are several ways to trigger automatic extensions to his contract, including an eight-win regular season, which gets him one extra year. If the athletic director who hired him, Ashley Robinson, leaves Jackson State, Sanders gets a one-year extension. If JSU leaves the SWAC, he gets two years added to his deal.

New on Sports Illustrated: Lakers' Avery Bradley Helps Supply Toys to Moms in WNBA Bubble
Lakers guard Avery Bradley and his wife Ashley donated more than $30,000 in supplies to the WNBA bubble.
Lakers guard Avery Bradley and his wife Ashley donated more than $30,000 in supplies to the WNBA bubble with an emphasis on helping the league's working moms, he told Forbes' Shlomo Sprung.
Bradley, who did not participate in the NBA restart for family reasons, provided WNBA moms and their children with playpens, toys, video games and consoles, ping pong tables, books, school supplies and outdoor games. The contributions also helped establish a "children's corner" in the WNBA bubble where kids could play.
“One thing that was really important was the moms, being able to make sure their essential needs were taken care of,” Bradley told Forbes. “They don’t make as much, obviously, and I wanted to see if I could be of service to them to be able to assist in any way I could so they could focus on just basketball.”
Bradley and his wife asked for a list of items that players might need to enhance their off-court experience, per Forbes.
The NBA bubble also had a "Bubble School," which hosted kids between ages 3-7 and supplied private tutoring and hands-on activities, as reported by ESPN's Baxter Holmes.
According to ESPN's Dave McMenamin and Malika Andrews, the Lakers guard watched his team claim its championship from his home in Texas, where his three children were in purple-and-yellow Lakers sweatsuits.
"Everyone was going crazy. Everyone was excited. My wife was excited," Bradley told ESPN.
"You play your whole career working for a championship and knowing that I was this close and a part of something, even though I wasn't there, is still an amazing feeling."

Johnson reportedly hosted a house party with roughly 100 people on Oct. 4.
Real Salt Lake's Samuel Johnson has been suspended from participating in team activities after hosting a house party on Oct. 4, according to KSL Sports' Tom Hackett.
Johnson reportedly hosted a party with roughly 100 people on Oct. 4, per Hackett. A man was shot in the shoulder at the party, and he suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Real Salt Lake confirmed Johnson's suspension on Monday.
"The team and League are aware of the incident and are currently conducting an investigation. In accordance with health and safety protocols, the player is prohibited from engaging in any team-related activity," the club said in a statement. New on Sports Illustrated: Dak Prescott's Injury is Proof the NFL is Cruel and Unforgiving
Prescott's devastating right ankle injury proves how unfailingly cruel and callous the NFL can be.
There are times when this sport is so unfailingly cruel, and not just in the more familiar callous, corporate, soul-crushing way.
Dak Prescott, a player who has overcome immense adversity and tragedy, who has traversed countless life obstacles and plowed an uphill path to becoming the megastar starting quarterback of the most popular franchise in the sport, was carted off the field on Sunday in tears with the kind of gruesome ankle injury that causes bottlenecking on the highway out of spectator curiosity. The Cowboys announced Prescott suffered a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle. It’s an inevitability that we won’t see him again this season. It’s a legitimate question (for another time) as to whether he played his final snap for the Cowboys.
Prescott rescued Dallas from irrelevance in the post-Romo era, weathered innumerable, unfounded questions about his poise and accuracy and rose quickly to become one of the most effective quarterbacks in the NFL, all while being the kind of affable figure that few who aren’t paid to be soulless contrarians can find a bad thing to say about. His reward for all this was to have his team lowball him at the altar when it came to contract negotiations, forcing him to either accept a below market deal or play the season out on the franchise tag.
That will largely be the focus of it all, of course. What Prescott should or should not have done with his money even if this injury proves he was right to wait out every last dollar he deserved. The inclination to make this about greed or liken it to some kind of flippant casino bet has been exercised in full force in the moments after he was flopped on the cart and stuffed a towel in his mouth to mask the pain. Before he was bussed to the hospital, a million anonymous wanna-be analysts, agents and financial planners already picked him apart.
What we’ll all realize in the coming weeks and months was just how valuable Prescott really is. During the height of the Cowboys’ latest surge, so much of the good was assigned to the offensive line and the running game to the point where Prescott appeared to be a product of the system. The reality couldn’t have been further from that unfounded platitude, with Prescott shining in the kind of advanced, individual statistics that clearly proved he was buoying a broken system for longer than we realized. He was one of the best things that happened to Jerry Jones’s Cowboys, a franchise that, for some strange reason, continuously found itself in the dumbest of luck as it stumbled from one franchise quarterback to the next.
Now, the Cowboys will marinate in the Andy Dalton era. Maybe it won’t seem so bad as they slog through the unimpressive waters of the NFC East. They did, after all, manage to beat the winless Giants by a fingernail on Sunday on the strength of a time-expiring field goal. Dalton hit on a pass down the sideline that had an 85 percent chance of falling incomplete. They did, after all, manage to take over first place and achieve a modicum of security.
But that’s the thing about a quarterback who truly alters your franchise. You’ll begin to notice it in the preparation and the meetings. In the interviews and on the sidelines. It will come in waves, especially during the meatier portions of their schedule where the Ravens, Cardinals and Steelers still lurk, not to mention the two Eagles games that will likely decide the fate of the division.
Through the remainder of the season, the focus might shift to what Prescott has done and not what he should have been doing. Maybe then, the inherent cruelty of the NFL shifts to an appropriate respect. Maybe then, we start talking about Prescott’s inevitable comeback.

Dak Prescott's Injury is Proof the NFL is Cruel and Unforgiving
New on Sports Illustrated: Week 6 Waiver Wire: Fantasy Football Replacements for Dak Prescott and Players on Bye
There are four teams on a bye (Saints, Seahawks, Chargers, Raiders) plus a handful of injuries to account for when identifying free agents to pick up in Week 6.
Free Agent Pickups: Week 6 Waiver Wire
For the first month of the season, injuries were the driving force that was wreaking havoc on starting lineups. But as we head into Week 6, injuries and bye weeks are now creating chaos for fantasy football managers.
There’s four teams on a bye in Week 6 and all of them have major fantasy football playmakers. The Seahawks, Saints, Raiders, and Chargers are all out of action. So fantasy football players with Russell Wilson, D.K. Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, Chris Carson, Drew Brees, Michael Thomas, Alvin Kamara, Josh Jacobs, Darren Waller, Keenan Allen, Hunter Henry all need to find replacements for their starting lineups.
That’s where the waiver wire comes into play. The bad news is if you’re looking for running backs with newly found opportunities this is not the week for you. The good news: a handful of wide receivers have been playing well and are readily available in more than 55% of public leagues.
Let's get to it.
Quarterback:
Andy Dalton, Dallas Cowboys: Dak Prescott suffered a gruesome ankle injury against the Giants. It was one of those injuries where his foot was facing the wrong way and watching the replay resulted in queasiness. The Cowboys passer was having a remarkable start to of the season. Prescott became the first player in NFL history with three consecutive games of more than 450 yards. His 1,690 yards in four games is the most all-time. But with Prescott likely done for the year, Andy Dalton will take over as the Cowboys starting quarterback. As far as backup QBs go, Dalton is perhaps the best. For fantasy, he has plenty of weapons in his arsenal that will help boost his stats. Is he going to put up Prescott like stats? No. But he's still worth a fair for Week 6 and beyond given the quantity of starting fantasy quarterbacks out for the upcoming week.
Teddy Bridgewater, Carolina Panthers: We had Bridgewater as one of our top pickups heading into Week 5, but somehow not enough fantasy players got that memo as the Panthers passer is still available in around half of fantasy leagues. Bridgewater threw for 313 yards (his second 300-yard performance of the year) and two touchdowns (for the second week in a row).
Derek Carr, Las Vegas Raiders: Keep in mind Carr is on a bye in Week 6 so fantasy players won’t have to fight off their opponents to add the Raiders signal-caller. Even though he’s on a bye, Carr is someone to consider (perhaps those that just lost Dak Prescott). In a surprising win against the Chiefs in Week 5, Carr tossed three touchdowns and 347 yards, his second consecutive week above the 300-yard mark.
Other QBs to consider: Alex Smith-Washington Football Team, Drew Lock-Denver Broncos
Running Backs
Chase Edmonds, Arizona Cardinals: Anyone that thought the Cardinals were going to hand Kenyan Drake a workhorse role has been let down in a major way. Chase Edmonds only saw three carries to Drake’s 18 but he was essentially just as productive. Edmonds ran for 36 yards and a score and grabbed five passes for 56 yards. He’s now found the end zone in back-to-back weeks.
Other RBs to consider: J.D. McKissic-Washington Football Team, Gus Edwards-Baltimore Ravens
Wide Receivers
Chase Claypool, Pittsburgh Steelers: A whooping four touchdowns against the Eagles in Week 5 will send the rookie's waiver wire demand through the roof. He caught seven passes for 110 yards and three scores and also ran in a TD. In Week 2 he had a solid game with 88 yards and a score but in his other two games this year he finished with less than 40 yards. His explosive ability, role in a productive offense and nose for the end zone is worth the price as this week’s top claim.
Travis Fulgham, Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles second-year wide receiver has made the most of his opportunity while the team's top receivers have been injured. Fulham followed up his touchdown in Week 4 with another TD in Week 5. But what was most impressive about his performance against the Steelers was catching 10 out of 13 passes for 152 yards. There’s no sign of DeSean Jackson or Jalen Reagor returning to action anytime soon, making Fulgham a starter in the Philly lineup for their matchup against the Ravens in Week 6.
Laviska Shenault, Jacksonville Jaguars: Perhaps when it comes to making waiver wire suggestions, the third time's the charm, because this is the third time we are suggesting adding the Jaguars rookie. Shenault caught seven passes for 79 yards in Week 5, that’s his fourth performance with double-digit fantasy points in five games. Yet he’s available in 66% of leagues. Time to take this rookie seriously!
Other WRs to consider: Preston Williams-Miami Dolphins, Tyler Johnson-Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Henry Ruggs-Las Vegas Raiders
Tight Ends
Cameron Brate, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: O.J. Howard is done for the year due to an Achilles injury and Rob Gronkowski is a shell of his former dominant self (and is mostly used as a blocker). Brate has always been a threat in the red zone and with Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Scott Miller all slowed down by injury, Brate has a real opportunity to make some noise in the coming weeks.
Other TEs to consider: Gerald Everett-Los Angeles Rams, Darren Fells-Houston Texans

New on Sports Illustrated: Dan Quinn’s Firing Has Been Inevitable, But the Falcons Don’t Have to Do it In-Season
We've known Dan Quinn would be out if Atlanta didn't rebound in 2020. But does his dismissal after five games solve any actual problems?
Firing a head coach five games into the season is the type of card typically played by franchises cauterizing an emergency situation that needs to immediately be rectified. Maybe, like in Houston, a power grab has gone awry. Maybe, like in Cleveland two years ago, the environment has become so toxic and clamorous that you have no other choice. Sometimes, as an owner, you feel time is running out on the season and you’d like to evaluate another coach on the staff. Sometimes, like the Eagles did with Chip Kelly, you make the move a couple weeks early in order to get an unvarnished look at the locker room and interview your players about who they’d like as a replacement.
Yes, the Falcons are 0–5, but firing Dan Quinn, as The Athletic first reported as an inevitability on Sunday, wouldn’t seem to solve a problem like any of the situations above. By all accounts, this was the same coach for which the team went on a frantic 6–2 run to save at the end of last season. This was the coach who brought the franchise to one of its two Super Bowls. This was a person who was willing to put the work in every day to satisfy the Sisyphean task of recovering from that infamous Super Bowl loss to the Patriots.
Simply put: Quinn was a good man and a good coach who deserved to see this to the end, no matter how gloomy that ending was. The Falcons aren’t catching anyone in the NFC South, even with a healthy Julio Jones. There is no salvaging 2020. What good comes from dumping Quinn now, outside of endless speculation about his replacement and, if the losing streak continues, whether or not they’ll move on from Matt Ryan and pick his successor at the top of the draft?
Quinn epitomized the best of the Pete Carroll coaching tree, as if he managed to somehow bottle contagious pep and dole it out to anyone and everyone around him. He was tireless in his efforts to both create an amenable culture and sustain the sort of egalitarianism that other coaches simply spout off about at their introductory press conferences. Every item and knickknack strewn throughout the facility had a purpose. He was one of the few coaches who put the team before himself. He treated everyone around him with respect.
While his dismissal was inevitable, especially if the Falcons did not rebound in 2020, that kind of service deserved an extended farewell. Seeing Quinn tossed aside like other unsuccessful NFL coaches pocked by politicking, bad schemes, stubbornness or an ultimate lack of self-awareness doesn’t feel right. There’s a good chance it doesn’t feel right to his players, either.
It will be interesting to see how, exactly, Atlanta weathers the remainder of the season. This was a team weighed down by the strange psychological burden of a modern sports curse: the idea that it couldn’t hold a lead. To say that it didn’t follow the team from the locker room at the end of Super Bowl LI would be shortsighted. Sometimes, there are simply ideas that a team cannot shake no matter how hard it tries. Quinn did his best, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see in his absence just how much he may have been holding things together.
