New on Sports Illustrated: Sam Merrill Sends Utah State to the Big Dance With Clutch Three to Upset San Diego State
Sam Merrill was the hero to send the Aggies to the NCAA tournament.
Feeling the madness yet, America?
Utah State is the first team to punch an official ticket to the 2020 NCAA tournament after knocking off No. 5 San Diego State in a thrilling Mountain West championship game, 59-56.
With three minutes to go in the first half, things were looking bleak for the Aggies, who had scored just 11 points and trailed by 16 to the 30-1 Aztecs. But Sam Merrill and Neemias Queta rallied Utah State in the second half, taking a late lead before a Malachi Flynn jumper put SDSU back in front by one with 1:06 to go.
Merrill responded by drawing a foul on KJ Feagin, making one of two free throws to tie things up. A missed three by Flynn gave the Aggies the ball back, and Merrill wound the clock all the way down before pulling up and draining a deep three-point attempt with 2.5 seconds to go.
Flynn got a great look at a half-court heave as the buzzer sounded, but his Hail Mary rimmed out, setting off pandemonium among the Aggies and their supporters in Las Vegas.
Utah State entered the Mountain West tournament knowing it would need to win the conference's automatic bid to avoid feeling incredibly nervous heading into Selection Sunday. The Aggies were among the First Eight Out in SI.com's Friday Bracket Watch update, and were not among the field of 68 in the Bracket Matrix consensus.
Knocking off San Diego State was a tall task, especially after the Aztecs swept Utah State in the regular season. The only team to beat SDSU before Saturday was UNLV. The Runnin' Rebels claimed the marquee win at Viejas Arena on Feb. 22.
Merrill, a senior, finished with 27 points as the night's hero, while the 7-foot Queta added 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, including multiple clutch buckets in the Aggies' late run.
Utah State will enter the NCAA tournament at 28-6 on the year, its best wins being over San Diego State, Florida and LSU. It'll be the team's second straight trip to the Big Dance after earning a No. 8 seed and losing in the first round last year.
The Aztecs are hoping the championship game loss won't knock them from the No. 1 seed line on Selection Sunday, but they can only sit and wait now as major conference tournaments get underway next week. They'll enter the Big Dance at 30-2, with wins that include Iowa, BYU and Creighton.

New on Sports Illustrated: No. 21 Houston eyes revenge in rematch with Memphis
Houston had the opportunity to stay tied with Tulsa atop the American Athletic Conference but the No. 21 Cougars came up short 77-71 at UConn on Thursday night.
The inability to win a meaningful game on the road despite three 3-pointers made in the last minute -- two by Quentin Grimes -- caused coach Kelvin Sampson to be pensive about the stature of his program.
"I do think we have a good program, but this is a long way from being a high-level team," Sampson said.
The Cougars' previous four losses in the AAC were by a total of six points. They lost two of their previous four conference games by a point to SMU and Memphis while beating conference leaders Tulsa and Cincinnati.
Houston (22-8, 12-5 AAC) hosts the rematch with Memphis (21-9, 10-7) in the regular-season finale for both teams Sunday.
Grimes, who finished with 24 points against UConn, did not play when the Cougars lost 60-59 at Memphis on Feb. 22. He missed the game with a hip pointer.
Caleb Mills' jumper with four seconds left was off the mark in that game. Houston missed its final four shots.
In the loss Thursday at UConn, Houston also had a breakdown late when the Huskies went on a 9-0 run to pull away with less than five minutes left.
"We kind let ourselves get sped up whenever the crowd got into it," Mills said. "We've got to mature in that aspect of the game."
Memphis is coming off a 68-60 win over Wichita State in its season home finale on Thursday.
Tyler Harris had a season-high 19 points -- including five 3-pointers -- and Precious Achiuwa posted his 17th double-double of the season (14 points and 16 rebounds).
The Tigers, who have won four of their past five games, committed only seven turnovers against the Shockers.
Memphis has an opportunity to finish in the top four of the AAC, which would earn the Tigers a first-round bye of the conference tournament next week.
"The guys knew this was a big game we needed," coach Penny Hardaway said after the win over Wichita State. "They were locked in."
Memphis took care of the ball after committing 24 turnovers in last weekend's win at Tulane. The Tigers had only one turnover in the second half against Wichita State.
"We talked about taking care of the ball and getting back on defense," said Achiuwa, a finalist for the Julius Erving Small Forward Award.
In the win over Houston last month, Achiuwa scored 10 points, including the go-ahead free throw with 28.2 seconds left.

New on Sports Illustrated: No. 9 Terps seeks rebound vs. No. 25 Michigan
Maryland enters its final regular-season game feeling a bit shaken. Still, the Terrapins can claim at least a share of the Big Ten title with a victory over No. 25 Michigan on Sunday.
Heading into their final five games, the ninth-ranked Terrapins (23-7 overall, 13-6 Big Ten) were in excellent position to claim the regular-season title outright. But they've stumbled toward the finish line by losing to Ohio State, Michigan State and Rutgers. The lone victory during that span against Minnesota was achieved by a single point.
Rutgers defeated the Terrapins 78-67 while shooting 49.2 percent from the field.
"We're just not playing like our normal selves," sophomore forward Jalen Smith told The Washington Post. "We're letting a lot of things slip. A lot of our principles that we're supposed to abide by, we're not really following. We've just got to figure it out."
Coach Mark Turgeon said his team needs to get tougher mentally.
"It's really frustrating," he said. "I think it's just the weight of everything. There's been great weight on us all year. ... But we can't feel sorry for ourselves. We've got to go get it."
Maryland was brimming with confidence during a nine-game winning streak that elevated it to the top spot in the Big Ten. The Terrapins looked like a totally different team at Rutgers, trailing by 21 points with seven minutes remaining.
Turgeon is optimistic he can get his team playing at a high level once again.
"I love this team," Turgeon said. "We've got to get back to guarding. Got to look in the mirror and say, 'I'm a hell of a player,' and quit hanging our heads and stay connected. We're going to get fresh between now and Sunday."
The Terrapins are led offensively by the one-two punch of senior guard Anthony Cowan Jr. and Smith. Cowan is averaging 16.2 points and 4.6 assists, while Smith is averaging a double-double with 15.4 points and 10.5 rebounds.
Michigan (19-11, 10-9) got a chance to face last-place Nebraska on Thursday after two consecutive defeats. The Wolverines took advantage of the opportunity, cruising to an 82-58 home victory.
Forward Isaiah Livers had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and guard Zavier Simpson also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists.
Simpson and his fellow senior, center Jon Teske, were playing their last home game. Teske finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
"It feels like yesterday I was standing here my freshman year off a big game," Simpson said to the Detroit News. "Now this is my last game standing here at Crisler. I just want to embrace every single moment of it and embrace the rest of the season because it goes by quick."
While the seniors got a proper sendoff, the Wolverines are hoping to have a long run in the upcoming tournaments.
"We have two high-class, high-character guys," Michigan coach Juwan Howard said. "I'm not surprised by how their college experience has been. It's been a fun ride, but they know that it's not over. We still have a lot more season to play."

No. 9 Terps seeks rebound vs. No. 25 Michigan
New on Sports Illustrated: No. 16 Spartans face tough finale vs. No. 19 Buckeyes
Michigan State has survived tough times on and off the court this season but has persevered to play for a share of the Big Ten title on Sunday.
The No. 16 Spartans (21-9, 13-6 Big Ten) host No. 19 Ohio State (21-9, 11-8) at Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich., to close the season.
Ohio State defeated No. 23 Illinois 71-63 on Thursday for its fourth straight win and ninth in 11 games.
Wisconsin is 14-6 in conference play, closing with eight straight wins, and has locked up at least a co-championship. The Spartans and Badgers split their two games on the season.
"For what we have been through, it's just hard to explain what it means to have the chance to play for a Big Ten championship after the way the last five months have gone," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said following the Spartans' rally from a 19-point deficit to win 79-71 at No. 20 Penn State on Tuesday.
Michigan State was tabbed the preseason No. 1 nationally, but at one point, the Spartans fell out of the Top 25 in part because Joshua Langford, considered the second-best player on the team behind senior Cassius Winston, has been unavailable all season because of a foot injury.
Then the program was rocked in November when Winston's younger brother, Zachary, committed suicide.
Izzo told CBS Sports this week the tragedy has been on everyone's minds.
"Some days (Winston) is just not with it," he said. "His mother, it's been hard on her. It's been like nothing I've ever gone through. If we can continue to win here, it will be the best accomplishment of my career, no matter where we go."
The Buckeyes have been challenged by adversity, although not to that level. Freshman D.J. Carton was starting to show why he was a four-star recruit before he took a leave of absence Jan. 30 to address mental health issues. He has not rejoined the team.
Guard Musa Jallow has missed the entire season after undergoing two ankle surgeries, and starting forward Kyle Young has been out the past three games due to an ankle sprain.
Yet, the Buckeyes have persevered. Against Michigan last Sunday, they went a on 23-9 run for a 77-63 victory. They outscored Illinois 23-6 in the final 9:48.
"We have been a very tough-minded group these last five weeks," Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann said. "We'll see if that continues. There's no permanency to that. You have to bring that each day to practice. That's a muscle you grow."
Freshman E.J. Liddell, a two-time Illinois Mr. Basketball, had a breakout game, tying his career high with 17 points and setting it with 11 rebounds vs. the Illini in Young's absence.
"I felt like the game has slowed down a lot," he said.
Said Holtmann, "His offense and defense were critical. He was phenomenal. Now we've got to see if he can keep doing that."

New on Sports Illustrated: No. 24 Wisconsin aiming for conference title vs. Indiana
No. 24 Wisconsin is playing as well as any Big Ten team down the stretch this season.
As a result, the surging Badgers (20-6, 13-6 Big Ten) can clinch at least a share of the conference title with a win at Indiana on Saturday afternoon.
Wisconsin picked up its seventh straight win on Wednesday, as forward Nate Reuvers (11 points) helped lead the Badgers to a 63-48 home win over Northwestern to move into a tie with Michigan State and Maryland for first place in the conference.
With the win, Wisconsin also clinched its 16th 20-win season in the last 18 seasons.
"Now we get ready to head to Bloomington," Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said. "Who would have thought a few months ago we'd have a chance to play for a Big Ten championship? I know they're excited about it."
The 3-point line has been critical to Wisconsin's success during its current seven-game win streak. The Badgers have made 77 3-pointers during the seven-game stretch, while holding opponents to just 35 3-pointers.
Indiana (19-11, 9-10 Big Ten) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 72-67 home win over Minnesota on Wednesday night. All five starters scored in double figures in the win, led by freshman forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, who had 18 points and 9 rebounds despite playing through a foot sprain.
"At home we were able to hold serve here the first part of the week," Indiana coach Archie Miller said. "Did a really good job and had a lot of guys step up and play well."
The Hoosiers have done a good job defending Assembly Hall this season, going 15-3 at home with wins over ranked teams Florida State, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan State and Iowa. IU is vying to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016.
"We don't really focus on it," IU senior point guard Rob Phinisee said. "We focus on day by day, winning the practice. Really we just want to tomorrow get after it in practice and do what we can so we can beat Wisconsin."
Before the game, IU will recognize its two seniors on Senior Day, guard Devonte Green and forward De'Ron Davis. The 6-foot-4 Green has raised his level of play during IU's late-season push, averaging 11.6 points and 2.1 assists over his last seven games.
Wisconsin won the first meeting between the two schools, beating the Hoosiers 84-64 in Madison, Wis., on Dec. 7, but both teams have evolved since then. The Hoosiers have become more connected defensively since December, holding teams to an average of 65.4 points over their last five games. Phinisee, who had 11 points and five assists in IU's win over Minnesota on Wednesday night, sat out the first game with Wisconsin with an abdominal injury.
"We're not done yet," Wisconsin junior point guard D'Mitrik Trice said. "We've got one more to go, and it's going to be a tough game. We're tied for first, it's a great feeling, but we've got to get back to the drawing board. There are still a lot of things that we can clean up."

New on Sports Illustrated: No. 25 Michigan looks for better D vs. Nebraska
There's an obvious reason why No. 25 Michigan struggled last week.
In losses to Wisconsin and Ohio State, the Wolverines' normally stout perimeter defense allowed a combined 22 3-pointers.
Limiting those good looks from outside will be a point of emphasis when the Wolverines (18-11, 9-9 Big Ten) host Nebraska (7-22, 2-16) on Thursday in Ann Arbor, Mich.
"We have to do a better job of having a certain level of focus and making sure that we close all the way to those 3-point shooters," head coach Juwan Howard said. "I'd rather see a lot of these stickers (3-point shooters) be able to shoot the ball with no air space with a hand-ball contest. But we will improve in that area. I trust we will."
Prior to last week, Howard's club appeared to be picking up steam. It reeled off five consecutive Big Ten victories and had held opponents below the 70-point mark in nine consecutive games. During the winning streak, the Wolverines only gave up a combined 21 3-point baskets.
The Badgers racked up 81 points and the Buckeyes scored 77, with each team knocking down 11 shots from behind the arc.
"Everything has got to be better," freshman forward Franz Wagner told the Detroit News. "Everybody has to be closer to their man, more in his face and more ready to close out to the shooter. ... We weren't ready, we weren't communicating and not everybody was aware of that what was happening on the floor. If I had an explanation for this, I wouldn't let that happen. Nobody would on the team."
Wagner collected his first career double-double at Ohio State with 18 points and 10 rebounds but only one other Michigan player reached double digits in points.
Intensity shouldn't be an issue against the Cornhuskers on Senior Night at the Crisler Center. Starters Jon Teske and Zavier Simpson and key reserve Austin Davis will be playing their last home game.
The Wolverines also have a road game against No. 9 Maryland on Sunday prior to the Big Ten tournament.
Michigan expects a quick turnaround.
"The confidence is at the same point it was during the five-game win streak because we know we can do it," Wagner said. "We know we have everything we need. It's just a matter of if we're able to show what we can do."
The Cornhuskers are tied for last place in the league with Northwestern. They're saddled with a 14-game losing streak, all against Big Ten opponents. That includes a 79-68 home loss to the Wolverines on Jan. 28.
Nebraska had a golden opportunity to end its slide against the Wildcats on Sunday, but woeful free throw shooting led to an 81-76 overtime loss. Nebraska was just 8 of 30 at the line.
The Cornhuskers have only knocked down 58.6 percent of their free throws this season.
"It's contagious," Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg said. "I've been around this game long enough, when you miss a few early, it just seems to get in everybody's head. Tempo gets quick, you don't trust your stroke. It's hard. We've been shooting better the last five games, about 65 percent. Then to have a night like this where you make a couple more and you're on the winning end."

No. 25 Michigan looks for better D vs. Nebraska
New on Sports Illustrated: Resurgent No. 23 Illinois visits No. 19 Ohio State
A good week for No. 23 Illinois potentially could become a great one with a victory at No. 19 Ohio State on Thursday.
The Illini (20-9, 12-6 Big Ten) have a chance to share the conference title with wins against the Buckeyes (20-9, 10-8) in Columbus and in their home finale vs. No. 18 Iowa on Sunday.
Maryland, Michigan State and Wisconsin also can finish at 14-6.
"We came here to win Big Ten championships," Illinois coach Brad Underwood said. "We've talked a lot about that. We're not out of it yet, and we're in the last week of the season. I feel great about that, and I'm so happy for our fans."
The Illini have a shot at their first regular season Big Ten title since 2004-05 and will finish above .500 in league play for the first time since 2009-10. They have the largest turnaround this season among the six major conferences, improving on last season's 12-21 record.
With Illinois poised make its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2012-13, the school announced Monday that Underwood agreed to a contract extension, adding three years to the original six he signed in 2017 when he took over the program.
"There's no place I'd rather be," he told the Illini Inquirer. "We got the most passionate fans. We've got the most intelligent fans. Recruiting's on a great tick. We've got an unbelievable staff. There are just so many things that are positives."
Illinois rebounded from a four-game losing streak in February to win its past four games but faces a challenge in the surging Buckeyes.
Ohio State was 2-6 in the Big Ten but has won three in row and eight of 10 while overcoming adversity.
Guard D.J. Carton took a leave of absence to address mental health issues on Jan. 30 and has not rejoined the team. Starting forward Kyle Young has missed the past two games with an ankle sprain and his status for Thursday is unknown.
"Obviously, we need Kyle back," Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann said. "We're not a better team without Kyle."
The Buckeyes are coming off a 77-63 win over Michigan on Sunday in which they outscored the Wolverines 23-9 in the final seven minutes.
"We tell each other all the time that we're built for this and made for this," guard Duane Washington Jr. said. "This is why we came to Ohio State, for moments like this."
The Buckeyes will play a big role in deciding the conference champion, as they play at No. 16 Michigan State on Sunday.
But Ohio State is more concerned about being in top form heading into the tournament.
"I think we had to close ranks and find a way to try to come together and perform better and own why we were struggling and what we were doing to struggle," Holtmann said. "That goes back to the guys in the locker room, particularly our captains. They owned the fact we had to perform better."

Find out how to watch 76ers vs. Lakers on Tuesday night.
With their two best players injured, the 76ers will take on the Lakers at Staples Center Tuesday night, hoping to do something they've had very little success at this season: winning on the road. The teams last played on Jan. 25 in Philadelphia, with the 76ers winning 108–91.
How to Watch 76ers vs. Lakers:
When: Tuesday, March 3
Time: 10:00 p.m. ET
TV: TNT
Live Stream: fuboTV (try for free)
Even without Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, the 76ers managed to put up 130 points on the Clippers Sunday afternoon. However, it wasn't enough in a 136–130 loss. Five different players scored in double digits though, including leading scorer Shake Milton, who had a career-high 39 points, and Tobias Harris also had 25 points. Sitting in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, the achilles heel for the Sixers this entire season had been them winning on the road. The team is 28–2 at home, but just 9–22 on the road.
Meanwhile, the Lakers are coming off an impressive 122–114 win over the Pelicans on Sunday without Anthony Davis. Once again LeBron James, the heart and soul of the Lakers, led the way. James had another triple-double, collecting 34 points, along with 12 rebounds and 13 assists. Five other players scored in double digits, including Kyle Kuzma, who tallied 20 points. The team better make sure not to look towards the end of the week when the Bucks, who own the best record in the NBA, come to town on Friday.

New on Sports Illustrated: No. 7 Florida State's ACC title chase runs through Notre Dame
No. 7 Florida State will look to sweep its regular-season series against Notre Dame when the teams meet Wednesday night in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup in South Bend, Ind.
Florida State (24-5, 14-4 ACC) held on for an 85-84 win in the teams' first matchup Jan. 25 in Tallahassee, Fla. The stakes are even greater this time around as the Seminoles are looking to stay alive for at least a share of the conference title.
The Seminoles are a half-game behind No. 10 Louisville (24-6, 15-4) in the conference standings, but the Cardinals have only one game remaining while the Seminoles have two. So if Florida State wins its final two games, it would at least share the crown.
Florida State's league-title hopes took a hit when the Seminoles absorbed a last-second, 70-69 loss at Clemson on Saturday.
The next hurdle comes against Notre Dame (18-11, 9-9), which has won three of four but is coming off an 84-73 road loss against Wake Forest on Saturday. The Fighting Irish have two regular-season games, plus the ACC tournament, to try to bolster their case for making the NCAA Tournament.
Notre Dame coach Mike Brey tried to light a fire under his upperclassmen after the loss to the Demon Deacons.
"Our best post defender was (sophomore) Nate Laszewski," Brey said to reporters. "Our senior big guys didn't guard anybody tonight. I love them to death, but they didn't play any defense. That's why we started Nate in the second half. We just told him to foul the heck out of (Wake Forest big man Olivier Sarr) if you have to."
Florida State will pose its own challenges to the Fighting Irish defense.
Three Seminoles guards are averaging in double digits this season: Devin Vassell (12.9 points per game), Trent Forrest (11.7) and M.J. Walker (10.4). Forward Patrick Williams is not far behind at 9.4 points per game, and forward Malik Osborne is contributing on both ends of the court with 6.2 points and five rebounds per contest.
Notre Dame is led by John Mooney, who is averaging team highs of 16.8 points and 12.8 rebounds per contest. T.J. Gibbs (13.2 ppg), Prentiss Hubb (11.8) and Dane Goodwin (10.4) also are scoring in double figures.
It was an unheralded player, Florida State reserve forward Wyatt Wilkes, who proved to be the difference in the first meeting between the teams. The sophomore finished with a career-high 19 points and shot 5-for-6 from beyond the arc in the win.
This time, history looms large: Florida State never has won a regular-season championship in ACC hoops.
"We're here. It's a new team," Vassell said to the Tallahassee (Fla.) News-Democrat. "(Seminoles assistant coach Charlton Young) always says, 'New blood, blue blood,' and stuff like that.
"It's just showing that it's a new team, a new FSU. We're trying to show everybody that we've been to the Sweet 16, we've been to the Elite Eight, but we're trying to get to a new place -- a place that we've never been before."
Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton said his players cannot afford to feel satisfied quite yet.
"We're trying to keep this in perspective," Hamilton told reporters. "We can't start getting excited about where we are now."
