New on Sports Illustrated: Army Accepts Bid to Independence Bowl

The Black Knights are the first team in the country to gain a spot in a postseason bowl.

Army is the first team in the country to secure a spot in a postseason bowl.

Following the Black Knights' victory over Mercer, the school announced it accepted a bid to play in the Independence Bowl. Army is now 6-1 this season, and is slated to face a Pac-12 team in Shreveport, Louisiana during the postseason.

Under seventh-year head coach Jeff Monken, Army is 3-0 in bowl appearances.

"We want to thank the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl, Chairman Frank Auer and the entire bowl committee for this incredible opportunity to play in this outstanding bowl game," Director of Athletics Mike Buddie said in a statement. "We are very excited to accept the first bowl invitation of the 2020-2021 season and to make our first trip to Shreveport since 1996."

In 1996, the Black Knights fell to Auburn 32-29. However, they are currently off to their best start since that season, which featured nine consecutive victories.

The Pac-12 is scheduled to start its football season on Nov. 7, and the date of the Independence Bowl has yet to be announced. The last time Army faced a Pac-12 opponent was at Stanford in 2014, when the Black Knights lost 35-0.

There are three primary tie-ins between Army and the Independence Bowl over the next six years — 2020, 2022 and 2024.

New on Sports Illustrated: Lane Kiffin Criticizes SEC Officiating on Twitter After Controversial Call in Loss to Auburn

The Ole Miss head coach criticized SEC officials via Twitter over a controversial call following the 35-28 loss to Auburn.

Lane Kiffin took to Twitter following Ole Miss's loss to Auburn on Saturday night to criticize SEC officials over a controversial call that led to a Tiger touchdown.

The Rebels led 28-27 with 5:43 left in the game when a kickoff appeared to bounce off of Auburn running back Shaun Shivers's finger before going into the end zone. The head referee Marc Curles blew his whistle, calling a touchback.

Auburn ended up punting before regaining possession later, scoring on a 58-yard touchdown reception by Seth Williams with 1:11 left. The Rebels lost 35-38, falling 1-4 and losing their third straight game. Kiffin said that the play was briefly reviewed, but the game was not paused for a full review.

Kiffin later retweeted a clip from the game posted by an Ole Miss fan, which showed the ball hitting Shivers's finger.

Kiffin's comments could be subject to a fine, but it wouldn't be the first time. In 2019, he was fined $5,000 by Conference USA while coaching at Florida Atlantic for a tweet that portrayed the refs as blind.

French tourist in Koh Samui develops Covid-19 symptoms after completing mandatory quarantine

A 57-year-old French tourist, who is visiting Koh Samui with her husband and son, has tested positive for Covid-19, Thailand's Public Health Ministry announced on Friday. The family had taken Thai Airways flight TG933 from the French city of Limoges and landed in Thailand on September 30, Division of Communicable Diseases director Sophon Iamsirithavorn said. They then completed the 14-day mandatory quarantine in an alternative state quarantine site in Samut Prakan and left for Samui on October 15. The family had tested negative in two tests on October 3 and 11, and had visited the French embassy before taking Bangkok Airways PG167 to Koh Samui. On October 17, the woman reportedly developed a fever but managed to go shopping at Big C supermarket and a 7-Eleven convenience store near their accommodation. Then on October 20, she went to Bangkok Hospital Samui in a private car and was admitted for one night. The hospital then sent her samples for further tests at Koh Samui Hospital.

New on Sports Illustrated: Antonio Brown Timeline: The Path From the Patriots to the Buccaneers

Here's a look at what happened to Antonio Brown following his release from the Patriots.

Antonio Brown reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Oct. 23. According to multiple reports, the deal is believed to have significant financial upside for Brown. Bucs quarterback Tom Brady, who briefly played with Brown last year, reportedly pushed the team to sign the 32-year-old wide receiver.

Brown is nearing the end of his eight-game suspension which was issued this summer after multiple violations of the NFL's personal conduct policy. He would be eligible to play Week 9 when Tampa hosts the Saints.

Here's a timeline of the events involving Brown following his release from the Patriots.

September 20, 2019: Sports Illustrated published a follow-up to its original story Sept. 16 story, which detailed an allegation of sexual misconduct against Brown, revealing that Brown had also sent threatening and intimidating text messages to the aforementioned accuser. New England released Brown that afternoon.

September 22, 2019: Brown, by then under investigation by the NFL, took to Twitter and declared he would no longer play in the league.

November 7, 2019: Brown appeared to lash out at the NFL in a series of tweets, including one that said, "F--- the NFL." However, he later apologized for the messages.

November 21, 2019: Brown filed three counterclaims against Britney Taylor, who previously accused the wide receiver of several acts of sexual misconduct.

December 27, 2019: The Saints call in Brown for his first workout with a team since being released. He reportedly leaves them "impressed," but nothing comes of it as NFL Network's Ian Rapaport said he would likely be placed on the commissioner's exempt list, leaving him ineligible to play. Several days later, Brown posts an Instagram video calling the workout a "publicity stunt."

January 23, 2020: Brown turned himself into Broward County (Fla.) Jail and was charged with battery, burglary of an unoccupied conveyance and criminal mischief.

January 28, 2020: A Florida judge freed Brown from house arrest, allowing him to travel freely as he awaited trial for attacking the driver of a moving truck.

"I put myself in a bad predicament," Brown told USA Today. "I'm out of it now, man. Unfortunate situation, but we don't make excuses and we're going to make the best of it."

January 29, 2020: NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters the NFL wants to help Brown get "on the right track," saying it would do everything it could to help the free-agent wide receiver.

March 26, 2020: Throughout the offseason, rumors swirled about Brown's potential NFL future. The Ravens and Seahawks were among the teams often thought of as possible Brown destinations. Another of the rumored destinations was the Buccaneers. However, on an appearance on CBS Sports Radio, Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians said Brown joining the Bucs was "not going to happen."

June 12, 2020: Brown pleaded no contest to the burglary and battery charges, which stemmed from the January incident. He was ordered to serve two years of probation and 100 hours of community service.

July 20, 2020: Brown posted another series of tweets saying he was done playing in the NFL. "[At] this point the risk is greater than the reward thank you everyone who been part of this journey I sincerely thank you for everything! life goes on 84!" Brown tweeted.

July 31, 2020: The NFL announced it had suspended Brown eight games for multiple violations of the league's personal-conduct policy. Brown was advised at the time that any future violations of the league's Personal Conduct Policy will result in more significant discipline. Brown's suspension also took effect in Week 1, despite him not being on a roster.

October 23, 2020: Brown reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with the Buccaneers, his third franchise in the last 15 months.

New on Sports Illustrated: Race of the Week: Will the Canadian Triple Crown Champion Take Home the Breeders' Stakes?

SI Gambling insider Frankie Taddeo handicaps this Saturday’s Breeder’s Stakes from Woodbine, including the latest odds and his best bets.

The SI Gambling Horse handicapping experts had a terrific afternoon at the track in the Travers Stakes when Tiz the Law came through in impressive fashion, helping our team crush the Exacta (8/1) and the Trifecta (36/1) after Caracaro & Max Player both hit the board!

In July, the team scored in the Blue Grass Stakes hitting the Exacta (12/1), Trifecta (60/1) and Superfecta (443/1). Now, the boys are back with some sharp opinions for this Saturday.

Two weeks ago, SI Fantasy PRO members scored when Dayoutoftheoffice ($7.80) crossed the line first in the Frizette Stakes with Vequist in second hitting the Exacta cold ($8.20).

This weekend, racing fans enjoy some fantastic graded stakes action at Woodbine. Among the 11 races on the card is the $400,000 Breeders' Stakes which has drawn a field of 12.

We were not treated to a Triple Crown horse here in the United States, however there is chance we could see a Canadian Triple Crown winner if the even-money favorite Mighty Heart (1/1) can win the Breeder’s Stakes after taking down the Queen’s Plate Stakes and the Prince of Wales Stakes. The ‘one-eyed’ horse has overcome his handicap and become an easy sentimental rooting choice as he chases the amazing feat.

Belichick (7/2), who is named after the New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, comes in as the second overall betting choice after finishing a respectable second behind Mighty Heart in the Queen’s Plate Stakes. This son of Lemon Drop Kid looks to be in peak form with a stellar morning work at Woodbine back on October 17.

English Conqueror (12/1) is an intriguing longshot who has the pedigree in the blood lines to relish the distance here on the turf and comes into the race trending in the right direction after breaking his maiden at Woodbine back on September 19.

Who will cross the finish line first? Let’s take a look at the odds and dive deeper.

Breeder’s Stakes

Racetrack: Woodbine, Ontario, Canada

Date: Saturday, October 24, 2020

Purse: $400,000

Distance: 1 ½ M, Turf

Race: 10

Post Time: 5:43 pm EST / 2:43 pm PST

HORSES OF NOTE: Listed by post number, name, and odds

#8 Mighty Heart (1/1) - The formula suggests this sentimental choice is a deserving favorite. He drew in well in this spot and if he takes to the turf surface he will earn the Canadian Triple Crown. Pick

#5 English Conqueror (12/1) - This colt has perhaps the best pedigree to relish the turf and the added distance. With so many unknowns of the top rivals and the turf switch, his experience on the lawn rates him as a solid longshot to upset the field at double-digit odds. Top Longshot

#9 Belichick (7/2) - He is the stable mate of the morning-line favorite, Mighty Heart, but would he really be looking to take away the distinguished feat of a Triple Crown in this spot? My lean is no. However, we know anyone (or animal) named Belichick is always out to win. Threat

South Korea's forensic team found no links between flu shot, boy's death: Media

SEOUL - South Korea's forensic agency has found no links between a 17-year-old boy's death and a flu shot he had taken, the Yonhap news agency reported, amid rising concerns about the safety of the vaccines following the death of at least 25 people. The boy was among the first reported to have died as part of a government campaign to vaccinate about 30 million of a population of 52 million to prevent coronavirus complications. The toll has grown to 25 over the past week, sparking calls from doctors and politicians for a halt to the programme. Health authorities have refused to suspend the campaign on Thursday (Oct 22), citing a lack of evidence to suggest direct links between the deaths and the vaccines. The National Forensic Service has been conducting autopsies on some of the deceased as part of a government investigation, and determined that the 17-year-boy's death had no relations with the vaccine, Yonhap said, citing police.

14 South Korean delivery workers die because of pandemic overwork: Union

SEOUL - 14 delivery workers in South Korea have died of overwork this year because they had to handle a sharply higher volume of packages due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the latest fatality this week, a union official said. A worker for CJ Logistics Corp collapsed while taking a short break late on Tuesday night (Oct 20) and later died in hospital, according to an official at the union representing delivery workers. The dead also included one worker who committed suicide after leaving a note about the harsh conditions he had toiled in, the official said. One of the deaths was attributed to heart failure, while the causes of death for the rest were only described as "kwarosa" by the families, a Korean term used for sudden death due to heart failure or a stroke as a result of extreme hard work. CJ on Thursday issued a public apology over the deaths of five of its workers, vowing to improve conditions for its couriers. The country's top logistics firm with 20,000 delivery workers said it was discussing compensation with the families.

New on Sports Illustrated: Gregg Marshall Allegations Illustrate the Wichita State Coach's Own Weakness

In 2020, when it should be clearly understood that making women symbols of weakness is both inaccurate and objectionable, Gregg Marshall apparently has not evolved.

Spelled out in uncensored English by The Athletic on Tuesday, the latest stories of abusive behavior by Wichita State basketball coach Gregg Marshall are, in a word, gross. His alleged use of slang terms for female anatomy to insult his players’ manhood and insinuate a lack of toughness actually perform the opposite of their intentions.

They graphically illustrate Marshall’s own weakness.

This is a man who can’t coach fortitude without getting into the gutter, who confuses challenging his players with belittling them, who believes basketball is some kind of weird testosterone cage match. What a limited worldview. What a limited vocabulary. What limited teaching skills.

One of the most disturbing elements of this most recent Marshall story is the fact that the vile terminology, hand gestures and overall mentality said to be employed by Marshall 20 years ago at Winthrop was allegedly still in use recently at Wichita. Two decades into the 21st century, when it should be clearly understood that making women (and their anatomies) symbols of weakness is both inaccurate and objectionable, Gregg Marshall apparently has not evolved.

For many years, the P-word was the absolute favorite word among college basketball coaches. They used it as a verbal lash in hopes of producing a harder edge defensively or on the glass or setting screens. (In my experience it was less ubiquitous at football practices and games than basketball, for some reason.) I recall being behind the Duke bench at the 2001 Jimmy V. Classic in the Meadowlands and listening to assistant coach Johnny Dawkins drop a finger-pointing, F-bomb/P-word combo on each of the Blue Devils starters during a timeout after a poor start against Kentucky. Mike Krzyzewski listened impassively.

(There is a reason most coaches now pull their team away from the bench to sit on portable stools during timeouts. They don’t want the fans behind the bench to hear the profanity.)

Conversely, male genitalia has been the symbol of courage, boldness, confidence and assertiveness. I don’t think any color analysts were yelling “onions!” when Notre Dame’s Arike Ogunbowale was winning both games of the 2018 Final Four with last-second shots. (Perhaps they should have been yelling “ovaries!”)

Anecdotally, I’d say the P-word and comparably vulgar terms have been in declining use among men’s basketball coaches (although media practice attendance also is on the decline, so there might be a correlation). There likely is a realization and an understanding within the profession that it’s not acceptable nomenclature. Getting after players is one thing—nobody said coaches have to be coddlers—but benighted insults are not going to fly the way they once did.

Except, maybe, at Wichita State. We’ll see what the school does from here, after previously hearing a laundry list of complaints about Marshall from former players that were reported by both Stadium and The Athletic a couple of weeks ago.

But the larger problem is this: In society at large, Gregg Marshall is not alone. If anything, it seems like this Girls Are Weak mindset is making a comeback. It should be deader than rotary dial phones and fold-up maps, but it isn’t. Fighting the inexorable tide of progress, the women-hating misogynists out there are loud and proud and still living like this is the 1970s.

If masculinity is to be protected in some threatened modern cavemen clans as an imperiled virtue, there has to be a corresponding vice. That vice is to be weak, soft—possessing the characteristics of a female. And boy, has the COVID-19 pandemic created a bull market for the cave clan to question the manliness of those who think a plague is something to take seriously.

This is the mindset that led a sports media opportunist turned failed armchair epidemiologist to market a slogan, “Don’t Be A P----,” and to put that acronym in hashtags and on T-shirts. It led to the ignorant misappropriation of the term “Karen”—from an entitled complainer to any weakling who is “scared” of the virus. It has led to the social media co-opting of male names into female ones (Pat, for instance, can be swapped out for Patty and Patricia. Clever stuff, if we’re back on the fifth grade playground.) It has led to every imaginable application of female anatomy as a presumed insult.

It’s all so retrograde. Especially when you consider the breadth of evidence within sports alone that women do not lack any traditional definition of toughness, fortitude or determination.

Pat Summitt, greatest of all women basketball coaches, famously went into labor during a recruiting trip to Pennsylvania. The University of Tennessee jet flying her home wanted to make an emergency landing in Virginia so she could give birth to son Tyler, but she vetoed that plan. Summitt wanted her son born in Tennessee, so she gritted it out and delivered in Knoxville. (Childbirth in general is one area where men generally don’t want to question a woman’s toughness.)

Chaunté Lowe, Olympic high jumper, trained through chemotherapy treatments in 2019 after a double mastectomy for breast cancer. Vomiting, nausea and extreme fatigue didn’t keep her from her workouts. Anyone want to question her toughness?

Gymnast Kerri Strug vaulted on a broken leg to cinch an Olympic gold medal for the United States in 1996. Skier Lindsey Vonn endured a succession of torn ligaments, broken bones, concussion and other injuries yet kept hurling herself down the side of mountains at a championship level. Katie Ledecky’s weekly swimming yardage and intensity would break some male swimmers. Wilma Rudolph went from stricken with polio as a child to the world’s fastest female sprinter. Who wants to deem them members of a weaker sex?

If you want another form of courage, there is the fearless barrier breaking of Billy Jean King, the Williams sisters, Becky Hammon, Nancy Lieberman, Janet Guthrie—the list is infinite, for those who choose to acknowledge it. We also might have a female vice president in a couple of weeks. So many strong women have made society better.

The Gregg Marshalls of the world keep trying to drag us backward, and he has more company than he should among the masses. But real men know that women don’t represent weakness. It’s time to have the strength to leave that stereotype—and the vulgar language that comes with it—in the past.

New on Sports Illustrated: Washington Football Team Name Could Remain Into 2021 Season

The Washington Football Team moniker might remain into next season.

The Washington Football Team could begin next season with its temporary name, recently hired team president Jason Wright said in an interview with WJLA.

"There’s a pretty good chance we will be the Washington Football Team next season,” Wright said in the interview, which aired on Tuesday.

In mid-July, Washington's NFL team announced it would call itself the "Washington Football Team," effective immediately, as it worked to figure out a new name to adopt at a later date. On July 13, the team said it would "retire" its old nickname after facing criticism and pressure from sponsors.

"I think next year is fast because of how the brand has to come together through uniforms, through approval processes through the league," Wright said.

"We could get there quicker, it's actually pretty hard to get there that quickly because of all the steps that need to happen."

The team's name change came after several team sponsors, including FedEx, had threatened to end their partnership with the team unless the name was modified. Prior to that, FedEx, Nike and PepsiCo received letters from shareholders and investors challenging them to terminate sponsorships with the franchise unless the change occurred. Nike appeared to remove all Washington gear from its online store soon after. Washington owner Dan Snyder had previously resisted changing the name, even telling USA Today in 2013 to "put it in all caps" that he would never make such a move.

In mid-August, Wright was hired as the team's president, making him the NFL's first-ever Black team president.

5-day-old baby dies of Covid-19 in Indonesia

JAKARTA - A five-day-old baby has died of Covid-19 in Jeneponto, South Sulawesi. The baby's mother initially had a reactive rapid test result, which led to both of them taking swab tests, which came back positive. "The swab test results came back on Oct 13. The samples were examined by the laboratory of Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital, Makassar," said the head of disease prevention and control at Jeneponto Health Agency, Suryaningrat, on Saturday (Oct 17). In June, a 40-day-old baby died in Tlanakan district, Pamekasan regency, East Java, after contracting Covid-19, believed to have been spread by neighbours who visited the newborn weeks ago. The baby, who tested positive for the virus when he was 28 days old, died in Smart Pamekasan General Regional Hospital after nearly two weeks of treatment. "Based on the contact tracing we carried out, the baby contracted Covid-19 from neighbours who visited him soon after he was born," Pamekasan regency Covid-19 task force chief Syaiful Hidayat said.

New on Sports Illustrated: Tua Tagovailoa Completes First Career Pass as Dolphins Crush Jets

Tagovailoa entered the game in the final minutes of Miami's 24-0 win over the Jets on Sunday.

The Dolphins got their chance to beat up on the winless Jets on Sunday afternoon, and Miami certainly took advantage of the AFC mismatch.

Brian Flores's squad bullied the Jets in a 24-0 win at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, bringing the Dolphins to 3–3 in 2020. And the blowout victory allowed for a number of backups to get additional reps.

Rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was one of the backup Dolphins to enter the game on Sunday. The No. 5 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft didn't exactly light up the scoreboard, though he did complete two pass attempts for a total of nine yards. The Alabama product looked sharp in garbage time, albeit in a small sample.

Tagovailoa completed his first two career passes, but it doesn't seem as though he'll be entering the lineup anytime soon. Veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick continued to shine on Sunday, completing 18 of 27 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns. As Miami stays in the playoff hunt, its likely to keep Fitzpatrick in the starting lineup.

Miami will have a bye in Week 7 before hosting the Rams on Nov. 1. The Dolphins are seeking their first play
