Thailand culls 200 pigs amid heightened fears over African swine fever

BANGKOK - Thailand has culled more than 200 pigs this week, the authorities said on Wednesday (Sept 18), in the first such action amid heightened fears of a potential outbreak of African swine fever.

Thailand has yet to report an outbreak of African swine fever among its pigs, though neighbouring Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia have all confirmed cases of the deadly disease.

Thailand's department of livestock said the culling of the pigs was a "preventative action" after two pigs died mysteriously in the northern province of Chiang Rai, about 20km from Myanmar.

"We have killed over 200 pigs on two farms there," Nopporn Mahakanta, chief of the provincial livestock office, told Reuters, adding that the action was in line with protocols to curb outbreaks of animal diseases.

"They were within a 1km radius of the pigs that had fallen ill and died," he said.

Thai PM Prayut defends police monitoring of Muslim university students

BANGKOK - Thailand's prime minister on Tuesday (Sept 17) defended police for requesting information about minority Muslim students from universities around the country, after criticisms of the move as discriminatory and illegal.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said the police request, which follows a series of bomb blasts in Bangkok in August that were blamed on Muslim suspects, was needed to build a national security database.

An official letter from police, shared online by former rights commissioner Angkhana Neelapaijit, asked a university to supply information about the numbers, place of origin, sect affiliation and other details about Muslim-organised student groups. The name of the university was blotted out.

"This is an interference to personal rights and a discrimination based on religion," Angkhana said, adding that freedom of religion and the right to privacy were guaranteed by the Thai constitution.

About 90 per cent of Thais are Buddhist, though Muslims are a majority in three southern provinces bordering Malaysia.

Prayut said the move was necessary.

Ex-Foxconn chairman Terry Gou drops Taiwan presidential bid in surprise move

TAIPEI - Terry Gou, founder of Apple supplier Foxconn, in a surprise move on Monday (Sept 16) said he will not contest in Taiwan’s 2020 presidential election.

Gou, Taiwan’s richest person with a net worth of US$7.6 billion (S$10.5 billion) according to Forbes, said in a statement late on Monday he would not join the already competitive race, after losing the presidential nomination from the opposition, China-friendly Kuomintang party (KMT) in mid-July.

“I have decided not to join the petition to run for president in 2020,” Gou said in a statement, apologising to supporters who had urged him to run for the presidency.

“I’d also like to say ‘thank you’ to everyone for your support and love,” Gou said.

“Although I did not contest in the presidential election, it doesn’t mean I have given up politics,” he said, adding he would continue to push for the policies he proposed during the KMT primaries. He did not elaborate.
