New on Sports Illustrated: No. 7 Duke downs Notre Dame 94-60 behind 21 points by Cary
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) Vernon Carey Jr. scored 21 points, Tre Jones added 19 and No. 7 Duke used a high-intensity man-to-man defense to beat Notre Dame 94-60 Saturday for its seventh straight win.
With No. 5 Louisville losing to Clemson, the win vaulted the Blue Devils (22-3, 12-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) into sole possession of first place in the ACC standings, one-half game ahead of the Cardinals.
Duke's relentless defensive pressure rattled an opponent that's usually steady on offense, leading to the lopsided score. Notre Dame entered the game averaging 9.75 turnovers per game, fewest in the nation, but turned the ball over nine times in the first half. The Irish (15-10, 6-8) had success when they were able to get the ball inside to Juwan Durham, whose 21 points marked a career high, and John Mooney, who scored 19.
But just as often, the Blue Devils' defense pushed Notre Dame far from the basket, forced a turnover and was off to the races in transition. The Blue Devils outscored Notre Dame 13-0 on the fast break in the first half and 24-7 for the game.
If a fast-break opportunity didn't present itself, the Blue Devils delivered the ball to Carey on the block, where neither Mooney nor Durham could stop him. Carey shot 8 of 10 from the field and took control of the game after the Blue Devils led just 20-19 with eight minutes to play in the first half.
Carey made a left-handed hook shot, scored on a post-up, and sank a 3-pointer from in front of the Notre Dame bench as Duke scored nine straight points to stretch its lead to 29-19.
Notre Dame had won four in a row before losing a heartbreaker in overtime Tuesday at Virginia but was well out of contention by midway through the second half Saturday. The Irish's backcourt players particularly had a dreadful day, as T.J. Gibbs and Rex Pflueger combined to shoot 0 of 13 from the field with zero points.
NOTES
A deafening cheer from Duke's fans early in the second half Saturday heralded the entrance of New Orleans Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson, who played for the Blue Devils last season and made the trip back to Durham from Chicago after playing in the NBA Rising Stars game Friday night. ... Mooney, who entered the game tied for first in the nation with 20 double-doubles, fell just short of another as he finished with nine rebounds to go with his 19 points. ... Carey has scored at least 20 points in four of his last nine games.

New on Sports Illustrated: Florida A&M needs 2 OTs to get past Delaware State, 97-95
DOVER, Del. (AP) Nasir Core had a career-high 29 points off the bench and Florida A&M needed two overtime periods to get past Delaware State 97-95 on Saturday.
Core scored 19 of his points in the second half and Rod Melton, Jr., who finished with 23 points, hit a 3-pointer with :37 left, then knocked down a jumper with :05 left in regulation to tie the game and force overtime.
John Crosby put Delaware State up, 87-85 with :02 left in the first overtime, but Bryce Moragne's layup at the buzzer forced a second overtime. Brendon Myles hit a jumper with :12 left to put the Rattlers ahead by two and added a free throw with :05 remaining to seal the win.
MJ Randolph had 13 points and nine rebounds for Florida A&M (10-13, 8-4 Mid-Eastern Conference), which earned its fourth straight victory. Bryce Moragne added 12 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.
The 97-point total were a season best for Florida A&M.
Crosby, the MEAC's leading scorer, had 20 points for the Hornets (3-21, 2-8), who have now lost four games in a row. Johquin Wiley added 18 points and Myles Carter had 17 points.
Florida A&M takes on Maryland Eastern Shore on the road on Monday. Delaware State faces Bethune-Cookman at home on Monday.

New on Sports Illustrated: Texas A&M rallies in second half to beat Georgia 74-69
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) Emanuel Miller scored a game-high 21 points and Texas A&M wiped out a 12-point deficit to defeat Georgia 74-69 on Saturday.
The game was tied 59-59 with 4:32 remaining before the Aggies outscored the Bulldogs 15-10 the rest of the way. Miller scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half.
The Aggies (12-12, 6-6 Southeastern Conference) avenged a 63-48 loss at Georgia (12-13, 2-10) on Feb. 1. The Bulldogs used a 15-6 burst in that game to start the second half and never looked back. This time, the Aggies outscored the Bulldogs 45-31 in the second half to pull away late, and snap a two-game losing streak.
Bulldogs freshman Anthony Edwards, the possible top pick in this summer's NBA draft, was held to six points on 2-of-7 shooting. Rayshaun Hammonds led the Bulldogs with 15 points.
The Bulldogs cruised to a 38-29 lead at halftime thanks to making half their shots from the field (15 of 30) and more than doubling up the Aggies in rebounds (21-10) in the first 20 minutes.
BIG PICTURE
Georgia: Saturday's outcome was par for the Bulldogs' course this season, in teasing their fans with a lead before unraveling in the second half. At this point it would take a miracle - aka an SEC tournament championship - for Edwards to play in the NCAA Tournament in what's shaping up as his lone collegiate season.
Texas A&M: When the Aggies were losing three straight games to Harvard, Temple and Fairfield in late November and early December, their fans wondered if they would win a league game. A&M is .500 a dozen games into league play, and its fan base is excited for the future under first-year coach Buzz Williams.

New on Sports Illustrated: Western Kentucky beats UTSA in OT 77-73, Jackson sets mark
SAN ANTONIO (AP) Jared Savage scored 24 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds as Western Kentucky beat UTSA 77-73 in overtime on Saturday.
Jhivvan Jackson, who came in as the nation's second-leading scorer at 26.9 points per game, finished with 27 and became UTSA's all-time leading scorer with 1,924 points, passing Devin Brown (1,922 points, 1998-02). However, the junior was just 8-of-24 shooting, making 3 of 10 from the arc, and missed his last five field-goal attempts in overtime.
WKU's Taveion Hollingsworth, who scored 23 points, made two free throws for a 75-71 lead with 29.6 seconds left in overtime. Jackson was fouled behind the 3-point arc with 4.4 left and made two free throws before failing to hit the rim while trying to miss the third. Savage then made two free throws.
Hollingsworth's one-hander in the paint tied the game at 64 with 41.9 seconds left in regulation and Jackson and Hollingsworth then missed jumpers.
Josh Anderson and Jordan Rawls finished 10 points each for the Hilltoppers (18-8, 11-3 Conference USA), who made 25 of 32 free throws to 10 of 10 for UTSA.
Keaton Wallace scored 25 points and Jacob Germany had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Roadrunners (12-15, 6-8).

New on Sports Illustrated: Lovan, Butler combine for 44 and UAB tops Middle Tennessee
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) Tavin Lovan and Will Butler combined for 44 points, leading four into double figures as UAB defeated Middle Tennessee 79-66 on Saturday.
Lovan scored 22 with six rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Blazers (16-11, 7-7 Conference USA). He was 7-for-12 shooting and made 8-for-11 at the line. Butler scored a career-high 20, a perfect 6-for-6 at the line, where the Blazers were 23-for-31. Makhtar Gueye added 14 points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting and Jalen Benjamin added 10 points with four assists.
C.J. Jones scored 14 points to lead the Blue Raiders (6-21, 2-12), whose losing streak reached four games. Donovan Sims added 14 points with five rebounds and three assists. Anthony Crump had 10 points.
Conference USA will announce a draw on Sunday for a round-robin over the final four games of the regular season. Teams will play within their groups to determine seeding to the conference tournament.

New on Sports Illustrated: NBA All-Star Skills Challenge and 3-Point Betting Preview and Expert Pick
NBA Skills Challenge and Three-Point Competition best bets for bettors looking for some action during All-Star Weekend.
For NBA bettors looking for some action during All-Star Weekend, there are two exciting options to choose from: the Skills Challenge and Three-Point Competition.
2020 ALL-STAR WEEKEND- SKILLS CHALLENGE
(Odds courtesy of WILLIAM HILL US)
SPENCER DINWIDDIE +400
SHAI GILGEOUS-ALEXANDER +450
PASCAL SIAKAM +500
PATRICK BEVERLEY +600
KHRIS MIDDLETON +600
JAYSON TATUM +600
DOMANTAS SABONIS +900
BAM ADEBAYO +1000
The Skills Challenge is a timed competition that tests each player’s ability to dribble, pass and shoot. Celtics star Jayson Tatum (6-1) is the reigning champion of the event, but the favorite according to the oddsmakers is the Nets' Spencer Dinwiddie (4-1).
This move by the sportsbooks smells fishy. I am going to take the cheese here and back both Dinwiddie (even though I hate playing chalk) as well as Tatum, because this event is a head-to-head format and Dinwiddie, like Tatum, has won the event previously.
2020 ALL-STAR WEEKEND- THREE-POINT COMPETITION
(Odds courtesy of WILLIAM HILL US)
TRAE YOUNG +300
JOE HARRIS +400
DEVIN BOOKER +400
BUDDY HIELD +600
DUNCAN ROBINSON +700
DAVIS BERTANS +800
DEVONTE GRAHAM +1200
ZACH LAVINE +1200
The new rule twist this year is the addition of two extra green balls set six feet behind the 3-point line. This now enables a maximum potential score of 40 points per round. Contestants will also now receive an additional 10 seconds on the shot clock, affording a potential allotted time of 70 seconds.
Joe Harris (+400) is looking to be the first repeat champion since Jason Kapono back in 2007-2008. Trae Young (+300) is way too inconsistent for me at such short odds. There has been sharp action on both the Heat's Duncan Robinson (+700) and the Wizards' Davis Bertans (+800). At juicy odds, I will be playing both and hoping for a nice longshot Saturday night. In addition, let's throw some beer money on the Hornets' Devonte Graham at 12-1.

New on Sports Illustrated: Black History Month: Ora Washington Shined on Two Courts
Washington was one of the most compelling players in both tennis and basketball during the 1930s.
This February, Sports Illustrated is celebrating Black History Month by spotlighting a different iconic athlete or group of athletes every day. Today, SI looks back on the legacy of Ora Washington.
Ora Washington was so good at tennis that white champions refused to play her.
Helen Wills Moody, then the top white champion in tennis, declined to play against Washington, a match that according to The New York Times was one of Washington's "greatest desires."
Washington was also a standout basketball player. Her team, which barnstormed the country during the 1930s, was so entertaining that they would "make you forget the Depression," according to a Sports Illustrated story from 2018.
Washington won title after title in the women's singles championship of the American Tennis Association—12 years in a row, in fact. At the time, tennis was segregated into African American and white circuits.
All the while, she would play basketball in her "offseason," winning national championships at will in her similarly segregated professional basketball league.
Washington was finally honored with entry into basketball's Hall of Fame in 2018.

• Althea Gibson
Here's how one Pennsylvania historical magazine described her tennis game, according to a 2018 Sports Illustrated story:
“She had the strategy and was dynamic to watch,” one fan later recalled, adding that “her overhead game was terrific.” Opponents struggled to cope. “She was so strong,” recalled Amaleta Moore, whose sister competed against Washington. “It was hard for you to fight against her with the talent she had.” She also had a winner’s drive. Off the court, family members described her as a kind, caring person, who was always looking out for others. But her competitive zeal was fierce. “If you made her mad,” noted nephew Lewis Hill, “you had a tiger on your hands.” Opponents often feared her. “She was intimidating,” Moore noted. “The way she looked at you: ‘You’ve got no business in my way.’“ The Chicago Defender concurred, noting in 1931 that “her superiority is so evident that her competitors are frequently beaten before the first ball crosses the net.”
Forget Bo or Deion—Washington might have been the best two-sport athlete of all-time.

New on Sports Illustrated: Brooks Koepka Still Finding His Footing in 2020
The world No. 2 is playing in his first PGA Tour event since October 2019
It’s been almost four months since Brooks Koepka has played on the PGA Tour—115 days to be exact.
After a Fall spent rehabbing his injured left knee, Koepka made his 2020 Tour debut on Thursday, though not many people are talking about it. Has there ever been a more talented, highly ranked, dominant player that simply gets overlooked?
It’s nothing new when it comes to Koepka. He’s been playing the under-appreciated chip-on-his-shoulder card all the way to four major titles, and after a two-week tune-up in the Middle East, the world No. 2, teed it up on U.S. soil for the first time since Oct. 7.
Koepka shot a ho-hum 2-under par 69 in round one of the Genesis Invitational, though he says the number was better than he actually played.
“I thought I hit it pretty poorly today,” Koepka said on Thursday afternoon
“Short game wasn't very good and didn't strike the ball well. I hit it great in the Middle East, kind of disappointed with how I showed up this week hitting it.”
With each of the top five players in the world and nine of the top 10 in the field, this week’s event has created a ton buzz. But while Tiger Woods looks to break the PGA Tour’s all-time wins record, and Rory McIlroy tries for his first win since being crowned the new No. 1 player in the world, Koepka is simply attempting to get his feet under him. It’s something he says could take some time.
“Sometimes it doesn't come right away, it just takes a few rounds,” Koepka said.
“I was only 10 days in when we started in the Middle East, so it wasn't like there was a lot of time, but I mean, I hit it great, I just needed to kind of play more and really get back on the greens and really understand what pace and line, all those things.
“I mean, you can practice it all you want, but at the same time, when the gun goes off, everything's a little different."
The gun has officially gone off for Koepka in 2020. He’s 5 shots off the lead, tied for 22 and, lurking on the leaderboard, and as usual, no one is talking about him.

New on Sports Illustrated: Donald Trump Expected to Attend Daytona 500 Sunday
The First Lady and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis may also join President Trump at the race.
President Donald Trump is expected to attend the Daytona 500 on Sunday and may also be joined by the First Lady and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, officials said Wednesday.
"The president will be here for the Daytona 500. That is all of the information I have at this time,” Joanne Magley, a spokeswoman for the Volusia County-run Daytona Beach International Airport wrote in an email to the Daytona Beach News-Journal.
U.S. Secret Service tweeted Wednesday that it was securing the Daytona 500 by establishing a 30-mile "no drone zone" around the racetrack.
Speedway spokesman Andrew Booth avoided confirming that Trump would be attending when asked by the News-Journal about any pre-race security measures fans will need to be aware of.
“Prior to all of our events, we have communications with our fans with all the important things they need know, including entrance procedures.”
Kyle Busch told reporters that while the Daytona 500 is already "off the charts fun," he's excited for Trump's arrival.
“I can’t wait for President Trump to show up and for all of the race fans to acknowledge him and just to have that fun atmosphere of a president at the Daytona 500.”
Trump will reportedly be the second sitting president to visit the race. The first was George W. Bush who was the president when he attended the event in 2004.
The 500 will be the latest sporting event that Trump will have attended. He was at the LSU-Clemson National Championship in mid-January. In recent months he also attended the famed Army-Navy rivalry game, an Alabama-LSU game at Bryant-Denny Stadium, UFC 244 at Madison Square Garden and Game 5 of the World Series between the Nationals and Astros.

New on Sports Illustrated: No. 12 Kentucky wary of last-place Vanderbilt
No. 12 Kentucky will try to hold on to at least a share of first place in the SEC when it visits Vanderbilt on Tuesday night in Nashville, Tenn.
The 12th-ranked Wildcats (18-5, 8-2 SEC) enter Tuesday in a three-way tie with Auburn and LSU atop the league standings. LSU hosts Missouri on Tuesday, while Auburn plays Wednesday at home against Alabama.
The Wildcats have won six of their past seven games, including Saturday's 77-64 decision at Tennessee, which snapped UK's four-game losing streak at Thompson-Boling Arena.
The Wildcats have ample scoring punch, led by guard Immanuel Quickley at 14.8 points per game. Forward Nick Richards is at 14.6 points per game, followed by guards Tyrese Maxey (13.4) and Ashton Hagans (12.3). But their play has been uneven at times, as losses to Evansville, Utah and South Carolina have proven.
On Saturday, Kentucky needed a boost from reserve freshman guard Johnny Juzang, who had a career-high 13 points, and freshman forward Keion Brooks Jr. (four points, team-high nine rebounds) to pull away from the Vols. Juzang entered averaging 2.3 points per game.
"Here's the biggest thing why you gotta have a team full of guys ready to go. We had a couple guys not play well," Kentucky coach John Calipari told reporters after the game. "They're not machines; they're not robots. Maybe it was a bad matchup. Whatever you want to say. So here comes Keion. And here comes Johnny."
Vanderbilt (9-14, 1-9) is last in the SEC standings but could be a tougher out than it seems.
Then-No. 18 LSU found that out Wednesday, when the Commodores posted a shocking 99-90 victory over the visiting Tigers at Memorial Gym. That snapped the league's longest regular-season conference losing streak at 26 games, thanks to career high in points from guards Saben Lee (33) and Maxwell Evans (31).
The fact that Vanderbilt can put a scare into someone shouldn't surprise Kentucky.
The teams met in Lexington on Jan. 29. Kentucky emerged a 71-62 victor after Vanderbilt held a 10-point lead in the second half.
Over their past four games, the Commodores have also taken Florida and Mississippi State to the wire thanks to Lee (16.9 points per game for the season) and guard Scotty Pippen Jr. (11.2), who have excelled at getting out in transition as well as driving to the rim in half-court sets.
It's a credit to coach Jerry Stackhouse, who has made adjustments with a limited talent pool; star Aaron Nesmith (23.0) has missed the past nine games with a foot fracture.
Stackhouse mixed his defensive looks in an 80-72 loss at Mississippi State on Saturday, when Vanderbilt also had a second-half lead.
"We competed hard and fought back a little bit," Stackhouse said. "We tried to slow them down with a half-court press where we dropped back in a zone. It caused them a few problems but it was one of those games where we had opportunities and had good looks that didn't fall for us."

New on Sports Illustrated: Livestrong Charity Looks to Rebuild in Wake of Armstrong Scandal
The cancer charity whose yellow wristbands became a global brand under founder Lance Armstrong is seeking to reinvent itself
AUSTIN, Texas—The cancer charity whose yellow wristbands became a global brand under founder Lance Armstrong is seeking to reinvent itself, years after donations and revenues crashed along with the disgraced cyclist's career.
Armstrong was nowhere to be seen earlier this month during Livestrong's "relaunch" ceremony in Austin. The charity announced plans to end its one-on-one cancer support services, where a patient could call for help dealing with insurance, counseling and medical trials. Instead, it will pivot to spending $5-6 million annually to support entrepreneurs developing products to improve treatment and patient care.
Livestrong will maintain its partnership with the Livestrong Cancer Institutes at the University of Texas Dell Medical School, which focuses on cancer research, patient care and treatment.
"We're more than a wristband," Livestrong president and CEO Greg Lee told a crowd of about 200 gathered for the event. A few minutes earlier, Gloria Gaynor's 1970s hit single "I Will Survive" pumped out of the speakers.
Livestrong's trademark yellow wristbands were once worn by celebrities and politicians the world over. Donations and commercial ties to Nike brought in tens of millions annually.
But those days are gone. The wristbands are rarely seen anymore, and Nike ended its Livestrong clothing line years ago.
The legacy and reputation of Armstrong, a cancer survivor who won the Tour de France seven times, crumbled abruptly following revelations he used performance-enhancing drugs. Livestrong has chugged along as a much smaller, leaner organization.
The relaunch came with an artistic redesign. Gone is the yellow-and-black "Livestrong" logo that mimicked the wristband, which is still available for purchase online. The logo has been replaced by a blue background with three rings -- orange, blue and yellow.
"We're nimble," Lee said. "We're not like an ocean liner. We're more like a jet ski that can turn on a dime."
Lee insisted the move is about better serving cancer patients, not just reversing declining financial trends.
Livestrong was a pioneer in providing one-on-one help to guide people through difficult and sometimes traumatic cancer diagnosis and treatment. The model has been successfully copied by many. The company therefore needs to find new, unique ways to help patients, Lee said.
A money drain also needs attention.
Armstrong founded the Lance Armstrong Foundation in 1997 after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer that had spread to his lungs and brain. His remarkable recovery and success on the world's biggest stage for cyclists fueled a boom that transformed the once small charity into a global force.
At its peak, Livestrong took in $41 million in donations in 2009, when Armstrong came out of retirement to finish third in the Tour de France. The downturn came when Armstrong's career and reputation were undone first by a 2012 investigation into PED use and his 2013 confession in a televised interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The charity desperately tried to distance itself from the scandal. Armstrong was pushed out of his role as chairman of the board of directors -- he remains listed as a board emeritus member but is otherwise not involved -- and the foundation's name was formally changed to Livestrong.
According to 2018 financial records, the most recent available, donations and revenue had dipped under $2.5 million. Assets listed at $100 million a decade ago have been whittled to $46 million. That includes a $37 million endowment, which has about $15 million tied to specific spending restrictions.
The 2018 report doesn't reflect the $17 million sale in 2019 of Livestrong's former headquarters in downtown Austin.
With that money in the bank, analysts at charity watchdog groups Charity Navigator and Charity Watch still give Livestrong good marks for being financially healthy overall and transparent in how it spends. And donations have leveled off from their initial plummet.
But Livestrong still spent three times what it takes in on its national partnership with the YMCA, the local one with the University of Texas and operating expenses. Lee's salary is about $350,000 per year.
"They are going to have to increase revenue or decrease spending. It will be a question of how they maintain that revenue," said Kevin Doyle, analyst with Charity Navigator.
Lee said Livestrong will shift its main fundraising model from one that depends on contributions at large to one that more aggressively seeks corporate and venture capital partnerships to support its grants and gifts.
Grants could support a wide range of tools for helping cancer patients, such as transportation services or smartphone applications that help patients organize treatment records or connect with multiple physicians, Lee said
Livestrong still has a formidable brand that will likely attract interest from grant applicants and investors, said Daniel Borochoff, founder of Charity Watch.
"They are still a high-profile group," Borochoff said. "People will be motivated to have the Livestrong name backing them."
A decade ago, Armstrong's towering presence alone could draw money as he dominated the world's most famous cycling race or flew around the world to meet with celebrities and political leaders at global cancer forums. In 2007, Armstrong's late-hour lobbying pushed Texas lawmakers to pass a $3 billion cancer research fund.
But his divorce from Livestrong was bitter. There were no photographs of Armstrong used in a video compilation of cancer patients and celebratory moments. His presence was missing from a display charting the foundation's first two decades, which included a large bowl filled with yellow Livestrong bracelets.
One speaker mentioned the foundation had been through good times and bad. Only the event host's passing reference to a "famous founder" seemed to acknowledge his impact in starting it all.
A Livestrong spokeswoman said the charity offered to brief Armstrong ahead of the unveiling party, but he declined. Armstrong declined comment when contacted by The Associated Press.
"We have done everything we can to talk to tell people that [Livestrong] is not about one person," Lee said. "We have a changing focus, a new mission and a new visual identity."

New on Sports Illustrated: Giannis Antetokounmpo to Sit Out vs. Kings After Son's Birth
The 2018-19 MVP announced the birth of his son, Liam Charles Antetokounmpo, on Monday.
Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo will be out against the Kings on Monday night, but the reigning MVP's absence will be a celebratory one.
Antetokounmpo is missing the matchup in Milwaukee as he celebrates the birth of his son, Liam Charles Antetokounmpo. Giannis announced the news via Twitter.
"I have no information on the whereabouts of Baby Freak or when Baby Freak is going to be here, but I know from the entire Bucks organization, we're hoping for nothing but a healthy and happy mother and baby," Bucks vice president Alex Lasry said on Monday, according to ESPN's Eric Woodyard. "And hopefully a future Buck."
Antetokounmpo heads to the bench in the midst of another potential MVP campaign. He is averaging 30 points and 13.5 rebounds per game this season, and the Bucks sport the NBA's best record at 45–7.
Perhaps the newest Antetokounmpo can hoist his first MVP trophy sometime in the 2040s.

New on Sports Illustrated: Jets host Rangers in quest for 4th straight win
The Winnipeg Jets entered the All-Star break resembling a team that needed a break. They have emerged from the hiatus as a team starting to get on a roll.
The Jets attempt to get their season-high fourth straight victory Tuesday night when they host the New York Rangers.
Winnipeg lost its final four games before the break and six of its last seven games before the nine-day layoff. The skid reached five games with a 2-1 home loss to the Boston Bruins on Jan. 31 but since then the Jets are 4-0-1 in their last five games, matching their longest points streak of the season.
The Jets are heating up again as their top players are also making contributions.
Kyle Connor, who has a team-high 28 goals and whose 59 points are tied for best on the squad, has three and six assists in six games since the All-Star break. Mark Scheifele, who is tops on the team with 36 assists and tied with Connor with 59 points, has five helpers since the break while Patrik Laine, who has 24 goals and 53 points, has seven goals since the break.
The trio contributed to a successful weekend when the Jets posted consecutive 5-2 home wins over the Ottawa Senators and Chicago Blackhawks.
Laine scored three power-play goals in Saturday's win over Ottawa when Connor also had a goal and three assists. In Sunday's win over Chicago, Connor scored twice to go along with an assist while Scheifele collected two assists to help the Jets overcome an early two-goal deficit.
"We finally have got it turned around a little bit now," Winnipeg's Blake Wheeler said. "We're believing in that game a little bit. It's given us an opportunity to win every night and we're getting those results."
While Winnipeg's surge has put it back into one of the wild-card spots, the Rangers head into a three-game trip well behind in the playoff race. But the Rangers are 4-2 since the break and 8-5 in their last 13 games since losing three straight Dec. 31-Jan. 4.
New York also is trying to get a season-high five games over .500. The Rangers are four games over for the ninth time after scoring three goals in the third period of Sunday's 4-1 home win over the Los Angeles Kings.
"A streak has to start with one," New York's Chris Kreider said. "We're cognizant of the standings and where we are. Obviously we need to go on a little run. We don't necessarily talk about it a lot, but what has been said is that our fate is in our own hands."
New York's fate in the lead-up to the Feb. 24 trade deadline also lies in its performance on the road. The Rangers play five of seven games away from home before the deadline and eight of its next 10 on the road through Feb. 28.
The Rangers are also coming off the best performance of rookie goaltender Igor Shesterkin's brief career. He is 3-1 with a 2.51 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage after making 42 saves Sunday.
"If you're going to be great, you better know you're great and he knows he's great," Rangers coach David Quinn said. "And for good reason. He's got a track record that's pretty impressive at a high level."
The Rangers are playing with three goalies on the roster since Shesterkin joined the team on Jan. 7. Alexandar Georgiev started Friday's loss to Buffalo while Henrik Lundqvist started (and was eventually pulled) in a 5-3 loss to Dallas on Feb. 3, but according to Quinn, keeping goalies sharp is not the focus anymore.

New on Sports Illustrated: No. 6 Dayton battles Rhode Island at top of A-10
Dayton kept multiple streaks alive with Saturday's victory over Saint Louis.
The No. 6 Flyers hope to keep rolling when they take on Rhode Island in Tuesday's Atlantic 10 Conference game in Dayton, Ohio.
The Flyers (21-2, 10-0 Atlantic-10) close out a three-game homestand riding a 12-game winning streak to go with 14 consecutive victories at home, dating to last season.
Sophomore forward Obi Toppin is averaging 19.6 points and 7.8 rebounds while shooting 62.6 percent from the field.
The Flyers had a tougher-than-expected battle against the Billikens, but they prevailed for their second victory over their conference foe this season.
"We're happy to come out with a victory," Dayton coach Anthony Grant said afterward.
"We knew we needed to put together a 40-minute game to be able to handle different things that come at you over the course of a game. I thought we got a great opportunity to experience that today. I'm proud of our guys. We made enough plays down the stretch, both offensively and defensively, to get the win."
The Flyers might need another 40-minute effort on both ends to upend the Rams (18-5, 10-1).
The Flyers and Rams are the top two teams in the conference standings, with the Rams nipping at the heels of the first-place Flyers. The teams will play two games against each other in a short period, as the Flyers head to Rhode Island on March 4. The Rams have won 10 straight games and are 6-3 on the road this season.
Whereas the Flyers struggled to beat Saint Louis on Saturday, Rhode Island is coming into the battle for first place off a dominant 82-51 win over George Washington. Fatts Russell paced the Rams with 24 points, and Cyril Langevine had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Russell is averaging a conference-best 20.3 points per game, with 20 points or more in five of his past six games.
The Rams, who were picked to finish fourth in the conference preseason poll, have proven to be a good team on the road, winning all five league games away from home.
Besides the on-court matchup, the conference clash pits two of the hottest coaches in the country in Grant and Rhode Island's David Cox. Both are considered to be in the running for national coach of the year honors.
Cox said Tuesday's game should be entertaining.
"This is what you dream about," Cox said. "This is what you get into college basketball for as a player and surely as a coach. Away game. There will be 12,000 people in there. They'll be going crazy.
"They've got probably the best player in college basketball on their team (in Toppin). They've got a seasoned, veteran coach who has coached at the highest level. It will be a challenge, of course. But this is what I've dreamed of."
The Rams have one of the top defenses in the country, ranking seventh in opposing 3-point field-goal percentage (28.2 percent). But the Rams don't have a deep team, ranking 317th in the country in bench minutes, according to kenpom.com, nor do they rely on 3-pointers. Rhode Island is last in the conference in 3-point attempts per game at 17.6.

New on Sports Illustrated: Inside the Numbers of MLB's Expanded Postseason Proposal
If a 14-team playoff format had been in place since 2012, nearly every club would have played in October.
What if the proposed expansion to a 14-team playoff field were in place for the past eight years (2012-2019)? We don’t know how it might have affected spending and team construction with more available postseason spots, but if you simply apply the format retroactively, here’s what you get:
• Twenty-seven of the 30 clubs would have qualified for the postseason in that eight-year period.
• Only two teams in those eight years would have qualified for the expanded postseason every year: the Dodgers and Cardinals–none in the American League.
• The 16 No. 1 seeds in those eight years would have been filled by 12 different franchises.
• The No. 7 seed (the last team to qualify in each league) posted an average of 84 wins. The high win total for a No. 7 seed was 89. The low was 79.
• Of the 112 playoff teams, only four would have qualified with a losing record (3.6%).
• The No. 1 seed would have averaged 100 wins, with a low of 95 and a high of 108.
• On Sept. 10–about three weeks left in the season–20 teams on average would be within five games of a playoff spot. Under the current system, that average is 15 teams.
• The maximum number of postseason games increases from 43 to 59. The maximum number of possible elimination games increases from 26 to 36.

Inside the Numbers of MLB's Expanded Postseason Proposal
New on Sports Illustrated: Red Wings head to Buffalo in search of winning streak
Last week, the Detroit Red Wings ended their latest extended losing streak with a victory over the Buffalo Sabres.
Now the Red Wings aim for third win in four games with a second victory over the Sabres during a six-day span, as Detroit visits Buffalo on Tuesday night.
Detroit might sit at the bottom of the league with a paltry 32 points, but it's picked up four points in the last three games following an 0-8-1 stretch. The slide ended with a 4-3 shootout victory at Buffalo on Thursday.
Though the Red Wings blew leads of 2-0 and 3-2 in that contest, they managed to prevail with Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou each posting shootout goals. After following that triumph with a 2-0 loss at Columbus, Detroit pulled off an impressive 3-1 home victory over Boston on Sunday.
In that one, Athanasiou scored a pair of third-period goals to help the Red Wings take down one of the top teams in the NHL.
"This shows everyone in the (dressing) room that if we compete, we can beat anyone," Athanasiou, who recorded his first points in four games since missing 13 with a lower-body injury, told NHL.com.
"If we come together and play a good solid game we can compete with the best teams in this league."
Detroit last won back-to-back games on Jan. 7 and 10, but will try for a third consecutive victory at Buffalo. That's where the Sabres are mired in an 0-2-1 rut and have just one win over their last six games.
Buffalo fell behind 3-0 in the first 12 minutes there Sunday against Anaheim and lost 3-2. Rasmus Dahlin and Johan Larsson had goals, but the Sabres lost for sixth time in eight games overall.
"It was important the character they showed to get (Sunday's game) turned," Buffalo coach Ralph Krueger said of his club. "We need to take the energy we showed in the last 50 minutes of the game into the next one."
Defenseman Dahlin has two goals with eight assists over his last 12 games. However, teammate Jeff Skinner has just one point in his last 16 contests.
It's uncertain who the Sabres will have in net after Carter Hutton, who has one win in his last seven home starts, was unable to go Sunday due to a family issue. Andrew Hammond was called up and Jonas Johansson pressed into a starting role and made 25 saves. Johansson stopped 18 shots against the Red Wings last week.
Detroit's Jonathan Bernier, meanwhile, has a 1.87 goals-against average over a 5-4-0 starting stretch. That included a 29-save effort versus Buffalo in that most recent meeting. Teammate Jimmy Howard, who started Friday at Columbus, is 0-16-2 with a 4.33 goals-against average as a starter since helping to beat Edmonton on Oct. 29.
Larkin, who leads Detroit with 40 points, scored twice against the Sabres last week. He's recorded seven goals with two assists in his last eight games versus Buffalo.
Detroit could get a boost with the expected return Tuesday of winger Anthony Mantha (12 goals, 12 assists), who has been out since Dec. 21 with broken ribs and a punctured lung.
