Police and activists clash in Hong Kong street battles

Riot police fired tear gas and demonstrators hurled rocks and bottles in street battles yesterday in the New Territories town of Yuen Long, in the latest violent protest in Hong Kong.

More unrest is feared today with another protest planned in Central on Hong Kong Island.

Thousands of black-clad activists, many wearing face masks and carrying umbrellas, defied a police ban and converged on the rural town in northern Hong Kong to protest against an attack by suspected triad gang members at Yuen Long train station last weekend.

Protesters gathered from mid-afternoon yesterday in a largely peaceful demonstration and hundreds of riot police were already in place in and around the town centre.

North Korea fired unidentified projectiles from around Wonsan: South Korea military

SEOUL - North Korea fired at least two unidentified projectiles early on Thursday (July 25) from an area near Wonsan, on North Korea's eastern coast, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

The projectiles flew about 430km to the east, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said, but did not elaborate.

The characteristics of their flight, including the range, was similar to North Korea's last missile tests in May, analysts said.

If confirmed, this would be the first missile test reported since US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met at the demilitarised zone (DMZ) between the two Koreas at the end of June.

A Japanese government source told Kyodo News the missiles did not reach Japan’s exclusive economic zone and had no impact on Japan’s national security.

The White House, Pentagon and US State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

But a senior US administration official said: "We are aware of reports of a short-range projectile launched from North Korea. We have no further comment."

South Korean YouTubers lure Japanese audience with attacks on President Moon Jae-in

SEOUL - Japanese citizens angry at South Korea's role in a diplomatic row over their wartime history that has spilled into trade have found some unlikely allies: South Korean commentators using YouTube to attack their own president, Moon Jae-in.

The South Korean leader has drawn the ire of conservative commentators at home for wrecking ties with Japan, a former colonial ruler now a key economic partner and fellow security ally of the United States.

To thousands of Japanese viewers, the YouTube channels offer a rare honest appraisal of an untrustworthy man who has turned against a neighbouring democracy while courting the dictator of North Korea.

Relations between the two deteriorated this year as simmering disputes over Japan's wartime use of forced South Korean labour reignited and Japan imposed export curbs on high-tech materials to South Korea.

"The responsibility for this situation lies with President Moon Jae-in and his government's foreign policy," Mr Ko Sung-kook, host of Kosungkook TV on YouTube, said on a broadcast earlier this month.

Multidrug-resistant malaria spreading in Southeast Asia: Study

LONDON - Strains of malaria resistant to two key anti-malarial medicines are becoming more dominant in Vietnam, Laos and northern Thailand after spreading rapidly from Cambodia, scientists warned on Monday (July 22).

Using genomic surveillance to track the spread of drug-resistant malaria, the scientists found that the strain, known as KEL1/PLA1, has also evolved and picked up new genetic mutations which may make it yet more resistant to drugs.

"We discovered (it) had spread aggressively, replacing local malaria parasites, and had become the dominant strain in Vietnam, Laos, and northeastern Thailand," said Mr Roberto Amato, who worked with a team from Britain's Wellcome Sanger Institute and Oxford University and Thailand's Mahidol University.

Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites which are carried by mosquitoes and spread through their blood-sucking bites.

Almost 220 million people were infected with malaria in 2017, according to World Health Organisation estimates, and the disease killed 400,000 of them. The vast majority of cases and deaths are among babies and children in sub-Saharan Africa.

North Korea's Kim Jong Un inspects new submarine, points out weapons systems: KCNA

SEOUL - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected a newly built submarine and pointed out its tactical capabilities and weapons systems, North Korean state media KCNA said on Tuesday (July 23).

The submarine, which was built under Mr Kim's "special attention", will be operational in the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan, KCNA said.

KCNA did not describe the kind of weapons systems the submarine contained or when the inspection took place.

Mr Kim showed great satisfaction with the construction of "our kind of powerful submarine", it said.

"In a country where the country's east and west is surrounded by the sea, the operational capability of submarines is an important component of national defence," Mr Kim said.

North Korea "should continue to develop our national defence capability by putting great efforts in developing naval arms equipment, including submarines", he said.

Mr Kim tasked defence and scientific officials accompanying him with achieving more strategic initiatives in submarine use, state media said.

India set for fresh moon launch attempt

SRIHARIKOTA, India - India will make a second attempt on Monday (July 22) to send a landmark spacecraft to the Moon after an apparent fuel leak forced last week's launch to be aborted.

The South Asian nation is bidding to become just the fourth nation - after Russia, the United States and China - to land a spacecraft on the Moon.

The mission comes 50 years after Neil Armstrong became the first person to step foot on the moon, an occasion celebrated by space enthusiasts globally last Saturday.

The fresh launch attempt for Chandrayaan-2 - Moon Chariot 2 in some Indian languages including Sanskrit and Hindi - has been scheduled for 2.43pm (5.13pm Singapore ) on Monday, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said.

"Chandrayaan 2 is ready to take a billion dreams to the Moon - now stronger than ever before!" it said on Thursday.

The first launch attempt was scrapped just under an hour before the scheduled lift-off because of what authorities described as a "technical snag". Local media, citing ISRO officials, said that issue was a fuel leak.
