New on Sports Illustrated: Three wins from perfect season, No. 4 SDSU hosts UNLV
College basketball's only unbeaten team, No. 4-ranked San Diego State, begins its final three-game stretch of the regular season on Saturday at home against UNLV at Viejas Arena.
The Aztecs (26-0, 15-0 Mountain West Conference) clinched an outright regular-season conference title last week, but did not let up in its 72-55 blowout win at Boise State on Sunday.
"This is a hard environment to play in," San Diego State coach Brian Dutcher said in his postgame news conference. "We've lost our last three (at Boise State)."
A win a few years in the making at Boise State wasn't the most noteworthy result from Sunday. The rout continued the longest winning streak in program history, and moved San Diego State three wins shy of a perfect regular season.
If the Aztecs can complete the season sweep of UNLV (14-14, 9-6), they have a home date against Colorado State and trip to Nevada remaining to complete the perfect run. Should San Diego State navigate that stretch, as well as next month's Mountain West Conference Tournament, it would become the third program in the last six years to enter the NCAA Tournament undefeated.
The last two -- Wichita State in 2014 and Kentucky in 2015 -- were the first since UNLV in 1991.
This year's UNLV team comes into Saturday's matchup with the prospect of finishing as high as second in the Mountain West. The Runnin' Rebels enter the weekend tied for fifth place with Colorado State, both with three games to play. They are a game-and-a-half behind the current second-place team, Utah State.
Finishing in the top five of the conference means getting a bye into the quarterfinals in the Mountain West Tournament. Finishing sixth or worse means playing in the first round.
UNLV has won two straight and three of its last four after dropping four straight from Jan. 22 through Feb. 5. The Runnin' Rebels outlasted New Mexico 78-73 on the road Feb. 15, then blasted Colorado State at home Tuesday, 80-56.
Coach T.J. Otzelberger called it UNLV's "most complete game of the year" in his postgame news conference.
"(It was) a terrific defensive effort against a really good offensive team," he said. "They were focused, they were intentional. Did a great job on that end of the floor, which led to us getting out in transition in that first half."
UNLV needs another strong defensive showing against a balanced and efficient San Diego State offense. The Aztecs feature four double-figure point-per-game scorers, led by Malachi Flynn's 16.7. Matt Mitchell has come on strong of late, including an 11-point, seven-rebound, five-steal and three-assist performance at Boise State.
"He just plays the right way, shares the ball, when he's open he shoots it, and he plays for his teammates," Dutcher said of Mitchell.
Flynn led San Diego State in a narrow defeat of UNLV at the Thomas & Mack Center on Jan. 26, scoring 21 points. In a performance indicative of the Aztecs' depth, Trey Pulliam scored 18 points off the bench, more than 14 better than his season average.
San Diego State's more regular contributors, including Jordan Schakel and KJ Feagin, contribute to the nation's ninth-best 3-point shooting percentage at 38.6.
Defending the 3-pointer has been a concern for UNLV, meanwhile. Opponents are hitting 34 percent against the Runnin' Rebels on the season.

New on Sports Illustrated: No. 2 Gonzaga, No. 23 BYU set for WCC showdown
Maybe they were both looking ahead to Saturday night's clash.
Both second-ranked Gonzaga and No. 23 BYU gutted their ways to victories on Thursday to set up a matchup of the top two teams in the West Coast Conference on Saturday in Provo, Utah.
The Bulldogs defeated the Cougars 92-69 on Jan. 18 in Spokane, Wash. That win was Gonzaga's sixth straight over BYU, who played without leading scorer and rebounder Yoeli Childs.
The Bulldogs lost their leading scorer Filip Petrusev, who left the game with an ankle injury after playing just 15 minutes and scoring five points.
Both will be ready to go come Saturday.
Now the stage is set for one of the marquee games of the weekend as the regular season winds down. Gonzaga can clinch its eighth straight WCC championship and 19th out of 20 with a win.
The Bulldogs (27-1, 13-0 WCC) overcame their worst half of the season and rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to beat San Francisco 71-54.
A couple of hours earlier, the Cougars, who are ranked in the Top 25 for the first time since the end of the 2010-11 season, defeated a pesky Santa Clara squad 85-75 for their seventh straight win.
BYU (22-7, 11-3) saw a 12-point lead evaporate before pulling away for the win. The Cougars, who came into the game as the best 3-point shooting team in the nation, went 3-for-13 from beyond the arc.
"I think they're the best team in the country right now," first-year BYU head coach Mark Pope told the Deseret News of Gonzaga.
TJ Haws, who was 12-for-12 from the line and scored 28 points in Thursday's win, didn't think the Cougars were preoccupied with maintaining their national ranking or looking past Santa Clara and ahead to Saturday's matchup.
"I don't think so. All year, this team has really believed in ourselves," Haws said. "The national ranking is cool, whatever, but I feel like we've built habits all year long of taking it one game at a time."
Good habits helped the Bulldogs avoid a colossal upset. Mark Few's squad committed eight turnovers, made just 38 percent of its shots and scored just 22 points in the first half.
"We were doing things I haven't seen in practice or all year," Few told Spokesman.com. "Trying to make tough passes, we weren't slowing down and catching the ball first. Weren't finishing strong around the rim. We just weren't very good."
The second half was all Gonzaga. The Bulldogs scored 18 of the first 20 points to regain control.
"I thought we were spectacular on the defensive end in the second half," Few said. "We just did a good job contesting shots, did a good job of giving them one-and-out and got our break going."
Killian Tillie, who missed the previous game against Pepperdine with an ankle injury, kept Gonzaga close with nine first-half points. He finished 10 of 13 from the field with 22 points.
Saturday's game pits intriguing matchups all over the floor.
Two of the nation's best big men -- Childs and Petrusev -- will go head-to head. Childs recorded 22 points and 11 rebounds against Santa Clara while Petrusev had 16 points and seven boards against USF.
BYU's backcourt of Haws and Jake Toolson scored 17 and 16 points respectively against the Bulldogs in January. The Gonzaga frontcourt of Tillie (22 points) and Corey Kispert (19) combined for 41 points in that same game.

New on Sports Illustrated: Report: Lakers to Waive DeMarcus Cousins Ahead of Stretch Run
Cousins signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal in July but suffered a torn left ACL in August
The Lakers are waiving big man DeMarcus Cousins, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne.
Cousins signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal in July but suffered a torn left ACL in August and has been rehabbing throughout the 2019-20 season.
He averaged 16.3 points and 8.2 rebounds last year in 30 regular-season games with the Warriors. Golden State signed Cousins to a one-year, $5.3 million deal in 2018 while he was recovering from a torn left Achilles.
Cousins recently appeared as a guest on Showtime's "All the Smoke" podcast with hosts Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, where he discussed what his possible postseason role would look like.
"We got a big team. It's going to be some bump, for sure," he said. "We got so many guys with different abilities. I mean, I can spot up. Bron is going to draw everybody whenever he decides to move. I'm pretty confident I can knock down the shot. We got shooters all over the floor. I mean, I can playmake. Like, it's pick your poison."
LeBron James also recently weighed in on Cousins' status.
"Listen, first, his health is the thing we're mostly engaging in and watching him. And he's progressed every single day, every single month," he said after practice Thursday. "To the point where he was limping and now he's actually shooting and actually jumping on the jump shots, and progressing every single day, every single week. He's out there right now, getting his work done.
"We want to continue to stay optimistic about his health. We don't want no setbacks, as he's had before in the last couple years. But his health is most important, and if we can get Cuz anywhere back to what he was capable of doing a couple years ago, it's a plus for us. But there's no pressure on him."
Over the summer, a warrant had been issued for the arrest of Cousins on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge in Mobile, Ala. But the charges of third-degree harassing communications and a misdemeanor case were dismissed in November.
The Lakers are reportedly in the process of bringing in Markieff Morris to shore up their rotation.
The 41-12 Lakers come out of the All-Star break on Friday night when they host the Grizzlies.

New on Sports Illustrated: Manchester City-Leicester City Preview
It is Champions League or bust this year for Manchester City as the two-time Premier League champions operate under the cloud of a potential two-year ban from European competition handed down last week by UEFA.
Looking to get into a rhythm ahead of their midweek round of 16 tie versus Real Madrid, the Cityzens face Leicester City in a showdown of top-three teams in the Premier League.
The Premier League title is a lost cause for City (17-3-6), who are 22 points adrift of champions-elect Liverpool with 12 matches remaining and their closest pursuers. Pep Guardiola's side can still achieve a domestic cup double for the second straight season, looking to win the Carabao Cup for a third consecutive year while also reaching the fifth round of the FA Cup.
But it is Ol' Big Ears that remains City's elusive white whale since Sheikh Mansour bought the team in 2008. His millions have fueled the rise of City to an elite football club in Europe, but some of those millions are the reasons UEFA claim the Manchester club have operated above the Financial Fair Play laws, leading to Friday's stunning announcement from the federation headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
Club CEO Ferran Soriano has said the team will appeal the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, and released a video statement through the team Thursday in which he said, "The owner has not put money in this club that has not been properly declared.
"We are a sustainable football club, we are profitable, we don't have debt, our accounts have been scrutinised many times, by auditors, by regulators, by investors and this is perfectly clear."
On the pitch Wednesday against West Ham United, City played the part of a team who have closed ranks and embraced the us versus the world mentality given the circumstances. Guardiola's side dispatched of the East London side 2-0 as Kevin De Bruyne set up a goal by Rodri on the half-hour before adding the second just after the hour.
De Bruyne's corner kick Rodri flicked inside the right post was his Premier League-leading 16th assist, two off his career best set in 2016-17. The Belgium international is on pace to shatter Thierry Henry's single-season record of 20 established with Arsenal in 2002-03.
Ever the perfectionist, though, De Bruyne felt his team could have done better coming out of the midseason break as their showdown at the Bernabeu with the 11-time European champions looms Wednesday.
"It was OK," the star midfielder told City's official website. "I think we saw its' been three weeks without football and we felt a little bit of rustiness, but we played a good game.
"We still have a lot to play for with the two cups and Champions League so let's hope we can find rhythm as quickly as possible and win some titles."
The two matches this week also serve as a boost for the match fitness of centre back Aymeric Laporte, who is expected to play his third match since a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee injury. He became the first player in Premier League history to be part of 43 wins in his first 50 matches.
To a degree, City's ban is Leicester's boom as the Midlands side have a far bigger margin of error if CAS do indeed uphold the UEFA decision. The Foxes (15-5-6) are four points behind City for second but nine clear of Chelsea for fourth in their best season since their dream run to the Premier League title in 2016.
Brendan Rodgers' side have played to draws on either side of the midseason break, including a scoreless deadlock at fellow European hopefuls Wolverhampton on Friday. Leicester City held out for the point despite playing the final 14 minutes with 10 men after Hamza Choudhury was given his walking papers following a second booking.
Choudhury will serve his ban in this match, but the midfield is further thinned with the absence of defensive ace Wilfred Ndidi, whom Rodgers ruled out of this contest with a knee injury that sidelined him the previous two league fixtures.
"Wilf won't be available for the weekend," the gaffer told the club's official website. "He's still in a process to try and get fit so we'll see how he is next week. I'm not sure.
"He's doing work inside, but you then have to progress that to outside and then when he can join the team. It's another intensity to join the team and then to play."
Defender Ryan Bennett could be tipped for his Leicester City debut as the January loanee from Wolves was ineligible to face his parent club. A candidate to fill the gaps in central midfield is Matty James, who has yet to feature this season as he recovers from an Achilles injury.
Looking to get back on the goal-scoring prowl is veteran striker Jamie Vardy, who has 17 goals and leads Manchester City counterpart Sergio Aguero by one for the league's Golden Boot. Vardy last billowed the net in the reverse fixture at the Etihad in December, staking Leicester to a short-lived lead in a 3-1 defeat.
Vardy has six goals in 13 lifetime matches against Manchester City, while Aguero has five in nine versus the Midlands club, including a four-goal effort in the 2017-18 season. Vardy's one-time strike partner and current Manchester winger Riyad Mahrez could be in line for a start with David Silva likely to be held out with a hamstring injury to try and make him available to face Real Madrid.
Manchester City have not done the double over Leicester City since 2014-15 but are 5-2-1 in the last eight meetings in all competitions. They have just one win in their last six visits (1-3-2), however, to King Power Stadium.

New on Sports Illustrated: Aston Villa-Southampton Preview
After rising from the depth of the drop zone to flirting with a top-half position, the last thing Southampton need is to start sliding again. Perhaps a visit from Aston Villa will help avoid that from happening.
The Saints look to prevent a third consecutive Premier League defeat on Saturday by doing the double over a visiting Villa side who have just one win since New Year's Day.
There was a time not too long ago that Southampton (9-4-13) were mired in the relegation zone and manager Ralph Hasenhuttl might have been in danger of a sacking thanks to an 0-2-6 rut. The Saints, though, followed with a 6-1-2 stretch that breathed new life into the club.
Currently, Southampton sit 12th in the table, but have lost three of the last four - including the last two at runaway-league leaders Liverpool and at home versus Burnley. Danny Ings' career-high 15th Premier League goal leveled last weekend's match at Burnley in the 18th minute, but the visitors prevailed with a goal on 60 minutes to earn the 2-1 triumph.
"It's a reminder that if we want to continue to win games in the Premier League, we have to do better than (last weekend)," defender Jannik Vestergaard told Southampton's official website. "I think we should have at least got a point."
The Saints got a full three points from their 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on Dec. 21. Ings netted a brace and Jack Stephens also scored in that contest.
Villa (7-4-15) enter this contest 17th in the Premier League table, one point and one position above the relegation zone. They dropped their second straight contest last weekend, 3-2 at Spurs. It appeared the Villans would at least earn a point until Tottenham stunned the home crowd with the go-ahead goal via Heung-Min Son in the 94th minute to claim the victory.
Aston Villa are amid a 1-1-3 stretch since Jan. 1, and have won just four times within the Premier League since Oct. 19. However, Villa know there is no use in feeling sorry for themselves, especially after last weekend's frustrating finish.
"We have to take the positives as a team, we showed a great performance," keeper Pepe Reina told Aston Villa's official website. "We believe in the three points all the time and that's the only way to keep Villa (in the Premier League). We believe in that."
Jack Grealish, who has a team-leading seven league goals for Villa, recorded one versus Southampton in December and added his sixth assist last weekend against Tottenham.

New on Sports Illustrated: Newcastle United-Crystal Palace Preview
A pair of teams trying to claim three vital points to distance themselves from the relegation scrap collide at Selhurst Park on Saturday when Crystal Palace host Newcastle United.
Roy Hodgson's side enter this contest 14th on 30 points, one back of Newcastle and six clear of the drop with 12 matches remaining. Given the compressed nature of the Premier League table this term, Crystal Palace (7-9-10) are also just nine games out of sixth place, a position that potentially offers direct entry into the Europa League next season pending Manchester City's appeal of their two-year ban on European competition handed down by UEFA last week to the Court of Arbitration of Sport.
Palace, though, are in a wretched run of form in league play - they have dropped three on the trot, are winless in their last seven (0-4-3) and have one victory in their last 11 (1-6-4) while scoring just nine goals in that stretch. The Eagles have a Premier League-low 23 goals and have failed to score more than two in any match across all competitions this season.
The Eagles had their midseason break last weekend, which may have come at an opportune time considering their last contest was a 3-1 defeat at Everton on Feb. 8. The usual offensive struggles were exacerbated by rare defensive breakdowns as Palace conceded more than two goals for just the second time all season.
The team took to Dubai for warm-weather training, with centre back Mamadou Sakho, midfielder Jeffrey Schlupp, and January signing Cenk Tosun all partaking. Midfielder James Tomkins, though, could miss out on this match after being forced off in the second half against Everton with a hamstring injury.
Despite the current struggles, club chairman Steve Parrish gave the 72-year-old Hodgson a vote of confidence Thursday, offering the former England national coach a new contract. Hodgson's current deal expires at the end of next season, but Parrish told Sky Sports "We are very relaxed about it, I think we will get that done in the fullness of time."
This matchup is also a case of the movable object meeting the resistable force given the teams' respective forms. Crystal Palace have tallied just 10 goals in their 13 matches at Selhurst Park while Newcastle United have shipped a league-worst 28 in their travels outside St James' Park in league play.
The Magpies (8-7-11) are coming off one of those disastrous road efforts, a 4-0 hiding administered by Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday. Two goals came three minutes apart in the second half before the hour, and the scoreline was fattened with a pair of stoppage-time goals allowed by Steve Bruce's club.
Despite the loss, newcomer Danny Rose is trying to rally his teammates to bounce back ahead of a winnable stretch of schedule that includes Burnley and Southampton and a fifth-round FA Cup tie versus West Bromwich Albion.
"Looking at the fixtures, I think there's only (Manchester) City, Liverpool (and Tottenham) out of the so-called top six who we're playing against," the former Spurs defender told Newcastle's official website. "All the other games are teams that we are going to be in and around us. We can achieve anything that we set our minds to and that has to be the spirit and everybody's mindset in winning as many games as possible.
"That's going to be my mindset. I come from a club that is used to winning, week in week out. That's always been our attitude and I hope I can install that here. I haven't come here to lose games; I've come here to win and to be part of something special."
Newcastle have gone back-to-back matches without a goal and have one victory in their last eight league matches (1-3-4). The Toons are also winless in their last five on the road (0-2-3), yielding 11 goals in those contests.
The Magpies are seeking the league double after posting a 1-0 home victory Dec. 21. Miguel Almiron's first goal with Newcastle since his arrival in January 2019 separated the sides as the Paraguay international struck seven minutes from time.
Newcastle have enjoyed the upper hand in this rivalry in the Premier League era with a 12-5-3 mark in all competitions. Despite going winless in their last four visits to Selhurst Park, the Magpies have taken at least one point in all but one of their previous 10 matches there (6-3-1).

New on Sports Illustrated: Penn State Settles 'Outstanding Issues' With Paterno Family
The university issued a statement saying it had agreed to pay ''certain of the Paterno family's expenses'' and wished to move forward.
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) Penn State and the family of the late head football coach Joe Paterno announced Friday they have resolved their differences eight years after he was fired following Jerry Sandusky's child molestation arrest, although the statue of the revered coach will not return to its place outside the football stadium.
The university issued a statement, read at a meeting by the chairman of the board, that it had settled ''outstanding issues'' with the family, had agreed to pay ''certain of the Paterno family's expenses'' and wished to move forward. The amount was not disclosed.
''It is time to come together and devote our energies solely to education, research and the advancement of one of America's great institutions of higher learning,'' Paterno's widow, Sue Paterno, said in a separate statement.
The deal ends a lawsuit against the university by the Paternos' son Jay, who is currently a member of the Penn State board. Jay Paterno had claimed the university-commissioned report into the scandal had unfairly tarnished him and made him unable to find work as a football coach.
In a phone interview, Jay Paterno called the agreement ''a relief'' and ''a long time coming.''
Joe Paterno was a Hall of Fame coach nearing the end of his career when a state grand jury summoned him to testify about Sandusky in early 2011.
A key witness against Sandusky was Mike McQueary, a graduate assistant who recalled seeing Sandusky with a young boy naked in a team shower on a Friday night a decade earlier. McQueary, highly disturbed, reported it to Paterno, and Paterno alerted administrators.
But police were not called - even though Sandusky had been criminally investigated in 1998, but not charged, based on a mother's complaint he had showered with her son.
After Sandusky's arrest, Paterno announced he would not coach after the season's end, but the board of trustees pushed him out days later, along with then-President Graham Spanier. The two administers who fielded McQueary's report through Paterno, Athletic Director Tim Curley and Vice President Gary Schultz, also were charged over how they responded.
Paterno's once-sterling reputation took a severe hit from the Sandusky scandal, including a decision by the NCAA to void 111 of Paterno's wins, effectively ending his status as major college football's all-time winningest coach. That decision was later reversed, and Paterno again holds that record.
The university also removed a statue of Paterno outside its football stadium.
Penn State spokesman Lawrence Lokman said there are no plans to reinstall it, something Joe Paterno's supporters have sought.
''If we're ever to revisit that, we've agreed that that would require the mutual approval of the Paterno family,'' Lokman said.
Joe Paterno was 85 when he died of cancer-related complications in January 2012.
Curley and Schultz later pleaded guilty to a single count of child endangerment and served brief jail terms. Spanier was convicted of child endangerment, but that was reversed by a federal judge.
Sandusky is serving a 30- to 60-year prison sentence.
Penn State settled with more than 35 people who said they were abused by Sandusky as children, making payouts that totaled more than $109 million. The school has spent many millions more in costs and fines associated with the scandal.

New on Sports Illustrated: Kansas vs Baylor: Betting Line, Preview and Best Bets
The game of the day on Saturday is a battle between the Kansas Jayhawks and the Baylor Bears. What's the betting line and who are the sharps backing?
Kansas (23-3 SU, 16-10 ATS) at Baylor (23-1 SU, 17-8 ATS)
Spread: WVU: +1.5 (-110) | BAY: -1.5 (-110)
Total: Over: 127 (-110) | Under: 127 (-110)
Location: Ferrell Center, Waco, Texas
Game Info: February 22 at 12 p.m. ET | ESPN
The game of the day on the hardwood Saturday features a clash between the No. 1 Baylor Bears, seeking to extend their current 23-game Big 12 winning streak, and conference rival No. 3 Kansas. While the Bears will be looking to further cement their case for the No. 1 overall seed come March, Kansas will be out to avenge last month’s 67-55 loss at the hands of the Bears when they fell as 7.5-point home favorites. Waco has been kind of late to the Jayhawks who are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 trips to Texas.
Kansas, who has covered four straight games against the spread, will need big efforts from stars Devin Dotson and Udoka Azubuike to have any chance to knock off a Baylor club that has just one loss on the season. The Jayhawks shot just 4 of 15 from long range in their loss back on January 11. The strength of that win by Baylor is even more impressive considering that the Jayhawks possess a top-10 offense in terms of efficiency. They can not afford another effort like that from beyond the perimeter if they expect any chance of knocking off the Bears on Saturday.
Baylor made history on Tuesday, becoming the first team to ever win 23 consecutive Big 12 conference games with their 65-54 win at Oklahoma. However, that streak will be severely tested on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears, who are 4-2 ATS in their six games at Ferrell Center, will have a distinct edge on the perimeter with Jared Butler and Davion Mitchell, who are both excellent shooters from beyond the arc. We still do not know if fellow star guard MaCio Teague, who is the team’s second-leading scorer, will be able to return from a wrist injury that has forced him to miss the Bears' last two games. In Baylor’s game last month with Kansas, Teague was instrumental in the club’s win, pouring in 16 points and going 6-10 (60%) from deep.
The sharp money in Vegas believes Baylor will extend their Big 12 winning streak by shutting down both Dodson and Azubuike once again on the defensive end. The Jayhawks will be motivated, but the Bears having home-court advantage will be the difference in the end.
Lay the small spread with the Bears. In fact, I would suggest that all bettors make it “Rollover Saturday”. Take the money won from a Bears victory on Saturday and ‘roll-it-over’ into a wager on the NCAA Futures market backing the Bears to cut down the nets in Atlanta at odds of 10/1. It’s a wise investment that could pay tenfold (literally) using “house money” on a team many, including myself, may be selling short. If this team of players had Kansas, Duke or Kentucky displayed on the front of their jerseys, I highly doubt there would be this much skepticism or this much value offered by the sportsbooks in the futures market.
The Play: Baylor -1.5
NCAA BB Season Record: 1-0 ATS
STREAK STATS:
- Kansas is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 road games in Waco
- Baylor has won its last 12 home games SU
- Baylor is 4-2 ATS in its last six home games
- Baylor has recorded a league record 23 consecutive Big 12 victories
The information straight from Frankie Taddeo, Sports Illustrated’s Gambling Vegas Insider, is currently on an amazing 33-8-1 ATS (80%) run on all released plays. The sharp information out in Vegas supplied only to Sports Illustrated was on point going a perfect 7-0 ATS in the NFL Playoffs, culminating with a winning selection on Kansas City in Super Bowl LIV. Since November, the sharps have absolutely crushed the sportsbooks. Be sure to follow SI Gambling for the wiseguy action from Vegas during March Madness!

New on Sports Illustrated: NFL Owners Approve Principal Terms of New CBA, Now Players Must Vote
It's clear the owners would like to get the new CBA approved quickly so they can turn their attention to the new TV rights deals, but will the players agree to the proposal currently on the table?
NEW YORK—NFL team owners briskly left a hotel in downtown Manhattan late Thursday afternoon, having approved the principal terms for a new 10-year collective bargaining agreement with the players. The attention now turns to the NFL Players Association, which will discuss on Friday whether to approve these same terms, negotiated between the NFL and the players union over the past 10 months.
The vote to approve was not unanimous among the 32 clubs, per a source with knowledge of the results. Notable changes among the terms voted upon include expanding the playoff field to include one extra team from each conference, for a total of 14 teams in the postseason, starting in 2020; a 17-game regular season with three preseason games, which would be instituted no earlier than 2021; and an increased revenue share for the players, up from 47 to 48 percent, or 48.5 percent if they move to the 17-game regular season.
The league meeting lasted slightly more than two hours, less time than some expected. Multiple owners declined comment as they departed, letting a statement distributed by the NFL do the talking. “I can’t comment on anything. I’m sorry,” said Giants co-owner John Mara. Others departed through back exits or with cell phones held to their ears. The statement contended that the terms accepted by the NFL clubs “will transform the future of the game, provide for players—past, present, and future—both on and off the field, and ensure that the NFL’s second century is even better and more exciting for the fans.”
Player leadership will convene via a conference call on Friday. Two-thirds of the 32 player reps, and a majority of all NFL players, would need to approve the terms for a new CBA. It’s not clear when negotiations would resume if the players do not agree to these terms, but the league’s statement indicated that if these terms are not accepted they will not keep trying for an agreement before the new league year. The current CBA expires in March 2021.
“Since the clubs and players need to have a system in place and know the rules that they will operate under by next week,” the statement reads, “the membership also approved moving forward under the final year of the 2011 CBA if the players decide not to approve the negotiated terms.”
The new league year begins March 18, and whether or not an agreement is reached will have an impact on free agency. For example, the final year of the current CBA allows teams to designate both one franchise player and one transition player—but if the players also agree to move forward with the new CBA, teams would again only be able to tag one player in 2020. That has big implications for a club like the Cowboys, which has several contract extensions to get done this offseason, including QB Dak Prescott and WR Amari Cooper.
Several prominent players have spoken out against the 17-game regular season, including 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman and Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette. Packers LT David Bakhtiari questioned the imbalance in the revenue split between owners and players in a tweet he posted Thursday morning with the hashtag #KnowYourWorth. On the other hand, Jets safety Jamal Adams tweeted his support for an extra game and extra revenue then deleted the post after Sherman replied asking him to call him to talk more deeply about the issue.
Per a source with knowledge of the terms the NFL clubs considered on Thursday, a 17th game would come with a modified season structure, including a longer acclimation period in training camp, fewer joint practices during the preseason and fewer allotted padded practices. In addition, a roster expansion has been proposed, with two new spots on both the practice squad and the active roster. Other gains for the players would include increased minimum salaries and expanded benefit packages for current and former players. It stands to reason that part of the players’ conversations on Friday will be if they are getting enough back if they agree to a 17-game season—or if there are enough players who want to continue fighting for more.
As evidenced by the speed of Thursday’s meeting, the owners are clearly eager to get a new CBA done so they can turn their attention to the TV contracts set to expire in 2021 and 2022. They also must feel good about the terms that have been negotiated until this point. Now, it’s up to the players to decide where they stand: Is there greater value in accepting these terms or continuing to fight for more?

NFL Owners Approve Principal Terms of New CBA, Now Players Must Vote
New on Sports Illustrated: Report: NFL Postseason Could Expand to 14 Teams in New CBA
The NFL postseason might be expanding as soon as next year.
The NFL postseason might be expanding as soon as next season.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the NFL and the NFLPA's current new collective bargaining agreement proposal would boost the sport's postseason from six teams per conference to seven. In addition, only one team from each conference would receive a first-round bye, according to Schefter, as opposed to two.
The new CBA, per Schefter, could be completed "sometime in the next week" and the postseason format changes would take effect in the 2020 season, if the deal was ratified in necessary time.
"That's been agreed to for a long time," one source familiar with the CBA talks told ESPN. "There wasn't a lot of disagreement to that issue."
The result of expanded postseason would mean playing six games total on Wild Card weekend.
The sides are reportedly still trying to figure out a number of issues, including the length of the regular season schedule. Schefter reports that the parties have not yet agreed on a 17-game campaign and that it wouldn't take effect until 2021 at the earliest.
A 17-game season would be accompanied by just three preseason games. Clark Hunt, chairman of the Kansas City Chiefs, said in mid-November that reducing the preseason is something “everybody would be in favor of.”
"If you replaced a game, perhaps two, with one regular-season game it would give you an odd number of games with 17," Hunt said. "One thought is you could play at least some of those games at a neutral site and obviously internationally would be one way to do that.”
The 10-year CBA agreement between the league and the union runs through the 2020 season and the two parties have been negotiating to try and avoid a work stoppage.

Report: NFL Postseason Could Expand to 14 Teams in New CBA
New on Sports Illustrated: Report: Steve Cohen Not Giving Up on Buying Mets
Could Steve Cohen eventually buy the Mets?
Billionaire Steve Cohen reportedly still wants to buy the Mets.
Despite news in early February that his deal to acquire a majority stake in the franchise fell through, the New York Post reported Wednesday that Cohen has not "given up on buying the Mets." In addition to owning the Mets, Cohen also reportedly wants the franchise's majority stake in cable network SNY if he were to bid close to the Wilpons' $3 billion valuation of the club.
Earlier this month, Cohen addressed reports that his attempt to buy a majority stake in the team collapsed, saying he "gave it my best shot."
At the time, the Mets ownership group released a statement on the attempted deal. "The transaction between Sterling and Steve Cohen was a highly complicated one," the statement read. "Despite the efforts of the parties over the past several months, it became apparent that the transaction as contemplated would have been too difficult to execute."
The Wilpons own 65% of the SNY, the cable network that broadcasts the majority of the team's games. Banking sources told The Post the network is valued between $850 million-$1 billion, with gross earnings near $150 million annually.
"Cohen wants SNY, and he wants it at fair value,” one banker familiar with the deal told the New York paper. “The team loses $50 million a year in a good year, so he wants SNY’s revenue, and he might pay a small premium to never have to deal with Fred and Jeff [Wilpon] ever again.”
Among other prospective buyers who have surfaced in recent weeks is former Yankees star Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez was reportedly "kicking the tires" on the idea of bidding in an upcoming auction for the Mets.
Last month, it was announced that Fred and Jeff Wilpon were looking to sell a majority of the team, which they have controlled since 2002, through holding company Sterling Partners. Bloomberg reported that Cohen was looking to acquire up to 80% of the team.
Cohen has been a Mets minority owner since 2012. The Wilpons have owned a majority stake since 1986 and bought the remaining 50% in 2002.

New on Sports Illustrated: Manchester United-Chelsea Preview
Chelsea's bid for a Champions League spot for next season looks to have one significant less hurdle. For Manchester United, there is suddenly a path to join them.
The two Premier League evergreens collide Monday night at Stamford Bridge coming off their midseason break looking to kick on for the stretch drive.
Both clubs have the chance to be the beneficiaries of UEFA's staggering decision to hand Manchester City a two-year ban from European competition on Friday. While that penalty will be appealed by the current two-time champions, it benefits Chelsea (12-5-8) more than Manchester United (9-8-8) in the short term.
The Pensioners are currently fourth in the table, nine points adrift of third-place Leicester City but also 10 back of Manchester City. Moving into a provisional third for Champions League play with the ban creates a greater margin for error for Frank Lampard's side, who host Bayern Munich in the first leg of their round of 16 tie on Feb. 25.
The morale boost could be needed given Chelsea entered their break in a state of flux. Lampard turned to Willy Caballero between the sticks a fortnight ago in their 2-2 draw at Leicester City, and that performance may have been enough to restore Kepa Arrizabalaga to the No. 1 status.
"The reaction from Kepa has been good as I'd expect, training hard, head down," Lampard told Chelsea's official website. "I haven't had lots of conversations with him this week and it'll be a decision for me to make. I've decided but you'll have to wait to find out."It doesn't matter how you came to the club, what age you are, what part of your career you're at. If it did, then I'd have to pick the whole team on how much they cost and it can't be that way. All the players know that. It's all about how you train every day and how you play on match day. I have to have that competition within the squad."
Chelsea also conducted some transfer business ahead of next season, agreeing to terms with Ajax forward Hakim Ziyech to bring him to London in the summer. The Morocco international has eight goals in 27 matches across all competitions for his Dutch club and 14 in 32 international appearances. In the short term, however, Ziyech will not be able to fill Christian Pulisic's spot as the American is closer to coming back from an adductor injury but not expected to be available in this match.
For Manchester United, the ban given to their eternal rivals throws them into what would currently be a seven-team scrap for the fourth Champions League spot. Despite being in ninth place, the Red Devils are just four back of Sheffield United for fifth in the table. A win and favourable results could vault them into sixth, but this match starts a challenging week in which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team face Belgian side Club Brugge in the first leg of their Europa League round of 32 tie and are home to Watford on Sunday.
"Yeah a win gives us a three-point gap and, of course, that's what we've got to aim for," Solskjaer said at Friday's news conference after the team returned from warm-weather training in Marbella. "We've played them twice already this season and done well, but Chelsea are a good team. They are at home, but we're going to go there to try to win the game.
"We've got to, to give us more belief and more hope and give us confidence that we can kick on, because we need to kick on."
United continue to be without injured first-choice striker Marcus Rashford, an absence that looms large considering he had a brace in the season-opening 4-0 victory that spoiled Lampard's coaching debut with Chelsea and another two-goal effort in United's 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge in October in the Carabao Cup.
To address the lack of personnel in attack, United signed Odion Ighalo on loan from Chinese club Shanghai Greenland Shenhua. He had 10 goals in 17 matches in the Chinese Super League, part of a productive spell in which he totaled 46 goals in 72 matches over two-plus seasons there after totaling 33 in 82 matches for Watford from 2014-17.
Solskjaer was coy about whether the Nigeria international would feature in this match, but is counting on Ighalo to ease the burden on youngsters Mason Greenwood, Daniel James, and Anthony Martial.
"The club has always been very good and, in Odion, we get a proper man, a great lad and a good goalscorer," the United boss told Sky Sports. "Not only was he top scorer in the Africa Cup of Nations but I know him from way back when he was in Norway 10-12 years ago. His career has developed and he gives us a different option up front.
"I'm delighted that he wanted to come for a few months on loan, from now until the end of the season. For us, it's great to have him around and I know he's such a Manchester United fan, he will give absolutely everything - on and off the pitch."
United are 3-2-0 in their last five matches against Chelsea in all competitions and are looking for their first four-match unbeaten run at Stamford Bridge since going 3-2-0 from 1994-98.

Manchester United-Chelsea Preview
New on Sports Illustrated: Postponed Blues-Ducks Game Rescheduled for March 11
Last Tuesday's game was postponed after Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester collapsed on the bench.
ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Anaheim Ducks’ postponed game against the St. Louis Blues will be played on March 11.
The NHL announced the new date Sunday for the game that was postponed after Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester collapsed on the bench during the first period last Tuesday.
The game will begin with a 1-1 score, as it was at the time of the postponement. It will follow a full 60-minute format.
The league also moved up the defending Stanley Cup champion Blues’ game against Florida from March 10 to March 9.
The new schedule means the Ducks will have back-to-back home games on March 10 and 11, giving them four home games in six days overall.
Bouwmeester is still recovering after going into cardiac arrest. He had a Cardioverter Defibrillator implanted into his chest at UCI Medical Center in Orange County, where he has been hospitalized since the incident.
