New on Sports Illustrated: Boilermakers deliver winning road show at Indiana, 74-62

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) Purdue finally figured out how to put together an impressive road show.

Just make shots.

Eric Hunter Jr. scored 12 points, Aaron Wheeler added 11 and Wheeler and Isaiah Thompson didn't miss a 3-pointer Saturday to send the Boilermakers past Indiana 74-62.

''saiah and Aaron between them are 5 for 5 (on 3s) so if you want to do something special and win at a place like Assembly Hall, you've got to have some guys step up and be special,'' Boilermakers coach Matt Painter said. ''We were tonight.''

They didn't have a choice.

The raucous crowd inside Assembly Hall started rocking early, in anticipation of seeing Bob Knight back on his home court for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Knight was introduced during a halftime ceremony along with former players, including members of the Hoosiers' 1980 Big Ten championship team.

But with Purdue's stifling defense forcing 14 turnovers and its offense showing signs of finally getting in sync, the Boilermakers (14-10, 7-6 Big Ten) could be on the verge of turning things around just in time for a postseason run.

They've won three straight overall, six in a row against the Hoosiers and now have back-to-back road wins after losing their first five in conference play.

''We just felt like mixing things up here the past two or three games, still running set but mixing in more motion (offense) doesn't get them sitting on every single thing. So hopefully we can catch them by surprise.''

Indiana (15-8, 5-7), in contrast, is struggling.

Despite getting 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists from Trayce Jackson-Davis, the Hoosiers lost their fourth straight and their second in a row at home. Justin Smith added 11 points and five rebounds for the Hoosiers, who trailed the entire second half.

Purdue needed just one good run - a 12-0 scoring spurt to close the first half - to swing the game. It gave the Boilermakers a 37-28 lead, which they extended to 54-38 with 12:39 left.

The Hoosiers responded with a 12-2 run, cutting the deficit to 56-50, but Purdue answered with seven straight points to put it away.

''Our turnovers in the first half really killed our momentum, and their run at the end of the half was really a deflating deal,'' Indiana coach Archie Miller said. ''But Purdue deserves credit, they executed well.''

BIG PICTURE

Purdue: The Boilermakers seem to have found some solutions to their previous woes. They've reached the 60-point mark in three consecutive road games, winning two of them. And with four of their last seven at home, where they score 17.2 points more per game, they could be set up for a strong finish.

Indiana: After beating Michigan State three weeks ago, it appeared the Hoosiers might make a move. Instead, they've taken a step back. The offense struggled to get in sync Saturday and 10 first-half turnovers certainly didn't help. Now, after four straight losses, Indiana needs a quick turnaround.

STAT PACK

Purdue: Sasha Stefanovic had 10 points. ... The Boilermakers were 8 of 16 on 3-pointers and had a 33-17 scoring advantage off the bench. ... Purdue also had a 28-20 edge in points in the paint.

Indiana: Jerome Hunter added 10 points. ... Indiana was 7 of 21 on 3s and had only four turnovers in the second half. ... The Hoosiers were outscored 11-1 in fast break points and fell to 12-3 at home.

GOOD KNIGHT

Miller is old enough to remember Knight as a coach and what made his teams successful.

His players, maybe not so much. But they do understand the significance of having the winningest coach in school history inside Assembly Hall, wearing an Indiana basketball sweatshirt.

''He's a legend,'' said Jackson-Davis, a freshman. ''He's the reason why people talk about IU basketball, really.''

UP NEXT

Purdue: Hosts No. 22 Penn State on Tuesday.

Indiana: Welcomes No. 17 Iowa to Assembly Hall on Thursday.

New on Sports Illustrated: Bob Knight Makes Peace With Indiana in Return From Self-Imposed Exile

Bob Knight returned to Assembly Hall for the first time since Indiana fired him 20 years ago, finally ending his feud with the program he helped build.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Here he came, at last. Years late, after so much spite had flowed under so many burned bridges, but better now than never. Finally, with mortality creeping in, it was time to stop fighting and stop resenting and stop boycotting.

It was time to make peace and come home.

Stooped and shuffling, 79-year-old Bob Knight made a halting entrance to the Indiana University arena he transformed into a basketball cathedral. It had been 20 years since he last set foot in Assembly Hall, 20 years since he was stunningly fired for one too many bullying acts in a brilliant career besmirched by them. He had rejected innumerable gestures from IU administrators and coaches and his former players, preferring to stay in his bunker of bitterness.

It’s a damn shame it took this long, but at least it finally happened. A thawing. Hopefully even a healing.

“This is one of the greatest and most emotional things ever for me,” said Randy Wittman, who played here for Knight from 1978-83 and was instrumental in making the reunion happen. “I don’t know if we’ll see something like this again in college basketball. This is where he belongs. … I’ll go to my grave with my memory of this today.”

There is something about seeing a towering figure in an enfeebled state that can reach inside a person and pry open unexpected feelings. Muhammad Ali, the most cocksure of all athletes, trembling while lighting the Olympic flame in 1996. Now here came Knight, a big man who always carried himself in an intimidating manner, in need of assistance.

The scene evoked an emotion that had been completely foreign where Bob Knight was involved: Pity. All the hard edges and hard feelings that had become The General’s aura were suddenly softened.

Led onto the court by Quinn Buckner and Scott May, the captains of his greatest team, plus another former 1970s star in Steve Green and his son, Pat, the white-haired Knight shuffled toward midcourt. On the opposite end of the floor were dozens more former players, all eager to see this reunion happen. Behind them hung three national championship banners that the coach and his players earned.

As the entire arena stood and bathed him in cathartic applause, Knight did what he rarely did as the tyrant-coach of the Hoosiers. He acknowledged the cheers.

More than that, he welcomed them, palms raised in something of a thank-you gesture. I daresay he even appreciated them.

“This state still loves this guy,” Wittman said. “And he still loves these fans.”

With tears in his eyes, Knight showed that even in a physically diminished state he is still a competitor to his core. He shook a fist and shouted, loud enough to be heard in the second deck without a microphone, for this Indiana team to “play defense!” He grabbed former guard Keith Smart, hero of the 1987 national championship game, and ordered him into a defensive stance. He incited a brief “dee-fense!” cheer.

He wasn’t going to leave the court without doing a little coaching.

This was halftime of the Indiana-Purdue rivalry game. The last game Knight coached here was Feb. 29, 2000, and it was a victory over the Boilermakers. They always brought out the best and worst in Knight—the competitive fire, but also the uncontrolled rage that led him to hurl a chair across the floor here during a game against Purdue in 1985.

The Boilers spoiled the script here Saturday with a comfortable, 74-62 victory that further pushes Indiana toward the brink of a fourth straight season without an NCAA Tournament bid. The dispiriting performance did no favors to third-year coach Archie Miller, who just saw his fans vividly reminded of how great it used to be here. (Knight at least could appreciate the language of one frustrated student who stormed out of the gym in the final minutes yelling, “I hate this f---ing team!”)

Knight spoke to the Hoosiers before the game, and “it was like he hadn’t left that locker room,” Wittman said. He watched parts of the game with all the former players in Cook Hall, the adjacent basketball facility. The pregame oration and halftime exhortation did not win the game, but Knight’s very presence won the day.

“We were just happy as hell he decided to come back here today,” said another former Indiana great, Mike Woodson.

There was an element of doubt about whether this special day would take place. Knight coached from 2001-08 at Texas Tech and remained in that area until a couple of years ago, but when he moved back to the Bloomington area it spawned hope that one day he would achieve detente with the school he represented—for better and worse—for three decades.

There were national titles in 1976 (the last undefeated team in the sport, and arguably the greatest team in its history), 1981 and ’87. That total might have been doubled by better injury luck in 1975, ’80 and ’93. But there also were so many abusive moments that Indiana enabled and fans excused, until finally school president Myles Brand had enough and fired Knight in September 2000.

From that moment on, Knight was at war with the school he once loved. The war was one-sided—Bob vs. Indiana University—and it was endless. Until Saturday.

Plans started to come together in late January, when Knight agreed to shoot a video for use on the Assembly Hall big screen during the 1980 team reunion at this game. By last week, it looked like Knight would attend this game—but his health situation left everything tenuous.

On Thursday, word began trickling out. Ticket prices soared on the secondary market. The student line started forming outside the arena Friday night, and by noon Saturday it wrapped around the building. Prominent Indiana alums like Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and ESPN studio anchor Sage Steele got tickets behind the home team’s bench.

For a state full of conflicted emotions about Knight, this was a big deal.

“For Indiana, it meant sort of a closing of the fissures that had been open for 20 years,” said WDRB sports reporter Rick Bozich, the foremost Knightologist I know, after being an Indiana student and then covering the coach for his entire IU tenure. “There used to be people wearing Texas Tech shirts in here. Now people can move on.”

Instead of eternally lingering regret, this was satisfying closure to one of the most significant coach-college relationships in college basketball history. It was an opportunity for Indiana fans to empty a half-century reservoir of affection for a giant figure who had been in self-imposed exile. And it was an opportunity for Bob Knight to lay down his sword and finally accept that affection, before it is forever too late.

The Cardinals (21-3, 12-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) led most of the way before the Cavaliers stormed back to go ahead 70-68 on Kihei Clark's two technical free throws with 3:25 left. Johnson's jumper tied it before Enoch's two free throws put Louioiville ahead for good.

Williams and Johnson each made one from the line before later adding two each to seal a hard-fought victory against Virginia after nine consecutive losses. McMahon sandwiched two in between as Louisville finished 21 of 24 from the line after shooting none in the first half.

Jordan Nwora had four 3-pointers and 22 points for Louisville, which finished shooting 51% despite hitting just 37% in the second half. Williams was 5 of 6 from the line for 11 points including the final two with 11.9 seconds left.

Tomas Woldetensae had 20 of his 27 points in the second half for Virginia (15-7, 7-5), which finished 11 of 20 from deep and shot 55%. But the Cavaliers were outrebounded 29-19 by Louisville.

BIG PICTURE

Virginia: The Cavaliers' defense initially succeeded in pushing Louisville out to the perimeter, but had their hands full accounting for several Cardinals who can shoot. Its shooters began firing in the second half, especially Woldetensae, but frequently put Louisville on the line.

Louisville: Nothing was going to come easy against Virginia, and that showed as the Cardinals couldn't stop Woldetensae from outside. But they didn't wilt and drew fouls that they converted to clear a big mental hurdle.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

Louisville's top-five status should remain intact.

New on Sports Illustrated: PP goals by Bergeron, DeBrusk send B's past Coyotes again

BOSTON (AP) Charlie Coyle scored two goals, and the Boston Bruins beat Arizona 4-2 on Saturday for their 16th straight victory over the Coyotes.

The NHL-leading Bruins earned their sixth consecutive win. Patrice Bergeron and Jake DeBrusk each had a power-play score 2:29 apart in the second period, and Coyle's second was an empty-netter that sealed it in the final minute.

It's Boston's longest winning streak ever against any opponent, surpassing a 15-game stretch against the Philadelphia Flyers during the Bobby Orr-era from 1970-1972 when the Bruins captured two Stanley Cups ('70 and '72).

Boston's last loss to the Coyotes came on Oct. 9, 2010, a 5-2 setback in what was a Bruins' home game in Prague.

Tuukka Rask made 29 saves for Boston, including a diving stop on Taylor Hall's wrist shot with about three minutes to play.

Phil Kessel and Jakob Chychrun scored for Arizona, which has lost five of its last six games (1-3-2) overall and six in a row on the road. Adin Hill stopped 29 shots.

Boston broke ahead 2-1 when Bergeron, positioned in the slot, redirected David Pastrnak's shot from the left point behind Hill just six seconds into a power play midway through the second period.

DeBrusk made it 3-1 at 14:35 when his tip of Pastrnak's shot from the left circle hit Hill's glove, bounced up and trickled into the net between his right arm and body.

Bruins defenseman Jeremy Lauzon was given a match penalty for a check to the head on Derek Stepan late in the first and the Coyotes took advantage, moving ahead 1-0 on Kessel's power-play goal 3:26 into the second.

Rask made a save, but defenseman Zdeno Chara cleared the rebound right to Kessel near the right circle, where he fired it over a diving attempt by Boston's goalie.

Just four seconds after its power play expired, Boston tied it when Coyle flipped a shot into the net from near the edge of the crease following Charlie McAvoy's nice backhand pass across the front.

The Coyotes clearly had the best scoring chance of the first when Rask made a splendid glove save on Conor Garland's wrist shot from the right circle. Garland, who had a wide-open shot on a rebound during a power play, just looked upward and smiled after Rask's save.

HAIL Z

The Bruins had a 10-minute pregame ceremony honoring Chara for recently reaching 1,500 career games and 1,000 with the Bruins - all as the team's captain.

He was presented with a watch and a trip to any destination from his teammates, and a gold stick and a painting from the club that was presented by president Cam Neely. There was a video tribute played on the scoreboard, which included his highlights along with congratulatory remarks from many of the league's star players.

He was joined by his wife, daughter and two sons on the ice. He got numerous loud cheers, with a fan yelling down from the balcony: ''We love you Z!.''

NOTES: Kessel played his 831st consecutive game, passing Andrew Cogliano for sixth-most on the NHL's all-time list. Kessel hasn't missed a game since Halloween night in 2009. . The Bruins won the clubs' first meeting, 1-0 in Arizona on Oct. 5.

New on Sports Illustrated: Report: Darren Collison to Decide on Potential Return Next Week

Darren Collison is reportedly planning on meeting his agent, Bill Duffy, early next week to make a final decision regarding his comeback.

Free agent point guard Darren Collison is planning on meeting his agent, Bill Duffy, early next week to make a final decision regarding a potential comeback, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

If Collison decides to return, Collison's camp will set up meetings with both the Clippers and Lakers, per Wojnarowski.

On Thursday's trade deadline special of ESPN's "The Jump," Matt Barnes said that Collison texted him and said he's "50/50" right now on coming back.

In late June, the UCLA product announced his abrupt retirement, following 10 years in the league. Collison said he wanted to concentrate on helping the less fortunate through his Jehovah's Witness faith.

"I could never imagine finding anything that brings me more joy than I get from playing the game," Collison wrote in an article for The Undefeated. "While I still love basketball, I know there is something more important, which is my family and my faith. I am one of the Jehovah’s Witnesses and my faith means everything to me. I receive so much joy from volunteering to help others and participate in a worldwide ministry. The joy I feel is unmatched. With that being said, I have decided to retire from the NBA."

Collison sat courtside with Lakers owner Jeanie Buss at Thursday's game against the Rockets.

Collison, 32, averaged 12.5 points and 5.0 assists per game while shooting 39.4% from three in 10 seasons, including two years under current Lakers coach Frank Vogel from 2010 to 2012 with the Pacers.

New on Sports Illustrated: Report: Astros Front Office 'Laid the Groundwork' for Sign Stealing

The Astros' cheating began with an application programmed to decode the opposing catchers’ signs, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Houston Astros’ sign-stealing operation appears to have involved more than just trash can banging and occurred in some form at both home games and on the road. Details from the Wall Street Journal’s Jared Diamond reveal that the team also utilized an Excel-based application, programmed with an algorithm that could decode the opposing catchers’ signs. The program, called “Codebreaker,” suggests it was the Astros’ front office that laid the groundwork for the team’s electronic sign-stealing scheme.

During MLB’s investigation into the Astros, then general manager Jeff Luhnow said he had no knowledge of any misconduct from his club. However, in a Jan. 2 letter sent by commissioner Rob Manfred to Luhnow obtained by the WSJ, Manfred wrote that “there is more than sufficient evidence to support a conclusion that you knew—and overwhelming evidence that you should have known—that the Astros maintained a sign-stealing program that violated MLB’s rules.”

Luhnow responded to Manfred’s letter with a binder including more than 170 pages that attempted to cast doubt on the letters’ contents, according to the Journal.

Both Luhnow and then-manager AJ Hinch were suspended one year for allowing the illegal sign stealing to happen on their team, regardless of their specific involvement in the scheme. Astros owner Jim Crane fired both Luhnow and Hinch shortly after MLB levied the suspensions.

Following the release of the league’s investigation into the Houston sign-stealing operation, Luhnow said in a statement: “The sign-stealing initiative was not planned or directed by baseball management. The trash-can banging was driven and executed by players, and the video decoding of signs originated and was executed by lower-level employees working with the bench coach. I am deeply upset that I wasn't informed of any misconduct because I would have stopped it."

The Journal’s report based on Manfred’s letter contradicts Luhnow’s statement denying his involvement. His participation in the organization’s sign-stealing system appears to now be in question.

The team’s Codebreaker system involved a person watching an in-game live feed and logging the catcher’s signs into the spreadsheet, as well as the type of pitch that was actually thrown, according to the Journal. The system then decoded the corresponding sign for each pitch. Once the signs were known, baserunners would steal and relay them to batters.

By June 2017, players started watching a live game on a feed and began banging on a trash can to communicate signs. The scheme lasted through the 2017 World Series. Houston’s bench coach at the time Alex Cora and then-designated hitter Carlos Beltrán were the only two other members of the team named in MLB’s report. Cora was hired as the Red Sox’s manager before the 2018 season, and he led Boston to a World Series title in his first season there. Beltrán was hired as the Mets’ manager this offseason. Both Cora and Beltrán were fired by their clubs for their involvement in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal.

According to the Journal, even though the banging scheme had ceased by the end of the 2017 regular season, the Astros continued using Codebreaker during the 2018 season, relaying signs more discreetly than by making loud thumping sounds. Houston also used Codebreaker to steal signs in away games, too, according to the Journal, which also reported that Luhnow received had received at least two emails documenting the scheme.

One was sent by Tom Koch-Weser, the team’s director of advance information on May 24, 2017, and was titled “Road Notes (April-May).” According to the Journal, the five-page email included six underlined topic headings, with the fifth one called, “The System”—a reference to what Koch-Weser described to investigators as “all kind of covert operations,” including sign stealing.

The Journal reports that Luhnow told investigators he didn’t read the full note because of its length, and that he was unfamiliar with the term “the system.”

On Aug. 26, 2017, in another “road notes,” Koch-Weser reportedly wrote: “The system: our dark arts, sign-stealing department has been less productive in the second half as the league has become aware of our reputation and now most clubs change their signs a dozen times per game.”

Luhnow replied to Koch-Weser in an email two weeks later, per the Journal, saying, “Tom, this type of write up is very helpful. Seems like our baserunning is still pathetic. What the hell happened to our pitching this series? I mean that was historically bad...”

However, the Journal reports Luhnow told MLB investigators that because of its length he did not read Koch-Weser’s whole email, to which he was responding, claiming he would have followed up on anything related to “dark arts,” because it sounded “nefarious” and “sinister.”

The Journal published its report about an hour before MLB Network aired Sports Illustrated’s Tom Verducci’s exclusive interview with Hinch, whose response to the scandal starkly contrasts Luhnow’s comments. While Luhnow blamed the players and distanced the baseball operations department from the scandal, Hinch repeatedly took ownership for his failure to act.

“I’m the man up front,” Hinch told Verducci. “As the manager I always feel responsibility for everything that happens in and around the team. I was in a position of knowledge, and that’s been mentioned. I’m going to serve a pretty stiff penalty, and I just want people to know I’m sorry for being a part of it.

“It happened on my watch. I’m not proud of that. I’ll never be proud of it. I didn’t like it. But I have to own it because I was in a leadership position. And the commissioner’s office made it very, very clear that the GM and the manager were in position to make sure nothing like this happened—and we fell short.”

New on Sports Illustrated: Steve Kerr on Andrew Wiggins: He's a 'Better Positional Fit For Us'

Steve Kerr seems excited about Andrew Wiggins' arrival in Golden State.

The day after the Warriors completed a trade with Minnesota shipping D'Angelo Russell, Jacob Evans and Omari Spellman to the Wolves in exchange for Andrew Wiggins, a lightly-protected 2021 first-round pick and a 2021 second-round pick, Golden State head coach Steve Kerr explained the rationale behind the deal.

"We know that Andrew is a better positional fit for us than what D'Angelo was, just given that Steph (Curry) and Klay (Thompson) will be back by next season—hopefully before then in Steph's case, " Kerr said. "So he's a good positional fit, athletically—now it's a matter of catching Andrew up to speed with what we like to do here and really trying to make an impact on him regarding our process and how we like to do our business and how we can help him get better and how he can help our team get better."

Wiggins' pace and speed at the three is another thing that Kerr likes about the former No. 1 pick in the 2014 draft. The Kansas product is averaging 22.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists on the season. After this year, Wiggins will be left with three years on his deal, worth just under $95 million.

The Warriors are currently just 12-40, the worst record in the Western Conference, but are poised to be at full-strength in future seasons.

Kerr acknowledged that there were initial concerns when Russell was signed this past offseason.

"To be perfectly blunt, the fit was questionable when we signed him. Nobody questioned that," Kerr said. "When you already have Steph and Klay and you add a ball-dominant guard you can rightfully question the fit. That was one of those reasons the trade rumors started before the season even began and I think D'Angelo understood that before he signed the contract."

The 23-year-old Russell agreed to a four-year, $117 million deal this past offseason upon joining the Warriors, having notched his first career All-Star appearance last season when he was the centerpiece of the Nets. The Lakers originally selected Russell with the No. 2 pick in the 2015 draft out of Ohio State. Los Angeles jettisoned him to Brooklyn in 2017 in a trade that netted Brook Lopez.

He is averaging 23.6 points, 6.2 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

Curry will miss at least another month as he rehabs his broken wrist, but the Warriors are hopeful for a March return, the team announced Saturday.

Sri Lanka arrests airline chief over Airbus kickback claims

COLOMBO - The former chief of Sri Lanka's national carrier was arrested Thursday (Feb 6) over allegations he received bribes for a multi-billion-dollar Airbus aircraft deal, as the fallout from corruption probes into the aviation giant grew.

The country's president ordered an investigation into the purchase after court documents mentioned SriLankan Airlines in corruption probes into Airbus.

A French court in late January approved a 3.6 billion euro (S$5.5 billion) fine to be paid by the European firm to France, Britain and the US to settle the investigations.

Investigators in Britain had accused Airbus of failing to prevent persons associated with the company from bribing directors or employees of the airline to "obtain or retain business or advantage".

Kapila Chandrasena - who was chief executive of SriLankan Airlines during the 2013 purchase - was Thursday remanded in custody for two weeks after being charged with money laundering and bribery.

His wife, Priyanka Niyomali Wijenayaka, was also arrested on money laundering charges.

Man charged over alleged rape of girl, 5, at US embassy in Delhi

NEW DELHI - A man has been charged after a five-year-old girl was allegedly raped on the premises of the American embassy in India's capital New Delhi, police said Thursday (Feb 6).

The 25-year-old was arrested at the high-security mission on Sunday after the girl's family complained of the sexual assault, which allegedly took place on Saturday at the living quarters for local housekeeping staff.

"The accused was arrested on Sunday immediately after the parents complained about the sexual attack," investigating officer Yogesh Kumar told AFP.

Kumar said preliminary medical tests confirmed the girl had been raped. The man was charged under child rape laws that carry the death penalty.

The sprawling diplomatic compound is one of the most secure in Delhi, with multiple layers of manned and electronic security.

India is struggling to combat a growing number of sexual assault cases in the country.

Violence against women in the South Asian nation has been under the international spotlight following the brutal gang-rape and murder of a Delhi student on a bus in 2012.

New on Sports Illustrated: Jay Berhalter Leaving U.S. Soccer Federation Altogether

Berhalter, the chief commercial officer and brother of USMNT coach Gregg, was thought to be a candidate for the vacant CEO position, but is instead moving on.

Jay Berhalter, U.S. Soccer's chief commercial officer and brother of U.S. men's national team coach Gregg Berhalter, is leaving the federation, U.S. Soccer announced Thursday night.

Jay Berhalter had come under fire amid anonymous Glassdoor reviews that uncovered a toxic culture within U.S. Soccer this past summer, and his presence as an executive within the federation led to concerns over a conflict of interest, given his familial ties to the USMNT coach.

Nevertheless, he maintained his high position of influence and importance within the federation and was thought to be a front-runner for the vacant CEO position within the federation, with the departed Dan Flynn's seat yet to be filled amid a lengthy search process. Flynn left the federation in September, but he announced his intentions to step away long before then. SI's Grant Wahl reported on Wednesday that Berhalter was no longer a candidate for the position, though, with, with a U.S. Soccer source saying that "he did not receive positive reviews from U.S. Soccer employees in a recent anonymous survey conducted by the federation."

According to U.S. Soccer's announcement, he is not being pushed out of the federation and is instead leaving on his own volition at the end of the month.

As chief commercial officer, Berhalter was responsible for spearheading a number of efforts, including the highly successful 2016 Copa America Centenario, which left U.S. Soccer with a reserve of over $160 million after a profit of $75 million on that event alone.

“Jay has played an invaluable role in the growth of our Federation and the evolution of the game in our country,” U.S. Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said in a statement. “His deep understanding of all the technical, commercial, and business aspects of the sport will have a lasting impact on the game across America.”

Berhalter spent 15 years with the federation across two stints, and he served as chief operating officer for the 2003 Women's World Cup, which was relocated from China to the United States amid the SARS epidemic. He also led the effort to create the Boys' Development Academy in 2007 before leaving the federation in 2009. He returned in 2014 in his current role, which included leading the federation's rebranding.

“Having been involved in the sport since the 1994 World Cup and the start of Major League Soccer, working towards the mission of making soccer the preeminent sport in the U.S. has been a fantastic opportunity throughout my career,” Jay Berhalter said in a statement. “I am fortunate to have worked with so many passionate teammates and proud of what we have been able to accomplish together at all levels of the game. My decision to leave U.S. Soccer was not an easy one to make, but it’s the right one for my family and me at this time. Looking to the future, it is exciting to imagine the opportunities that lie ahead.”

U.S. Soccer's annual general meeting is slated for next week in Nashville.

New on Sports Illustrated: MLB Hopeful to Finish Red Sox Investigation Before Spring Training

Before Red Sox Spring Training opens next week, MLB is hoping to publish its results of its investigation into Boston.

Speaking Thursday after an owners meeting, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said he's looking to finish the league's investigation into the Red Sox by the start of Boston Spring Training next week.

"I’m hopeful that that I can get Boston done before the camps open,” Manfred said, with workouts starting Wednesday.

Manfred reiterated that like in his conclusions on the Astros, no Red Sox players will be punished for their role in the team's alleged sign-stealing operation in 2018, when they beat the Dodgers in the World Series. It was then-manager Alex Cora's first season with the team.

Cora was let go by the club just days after the results of the Astros investigation were released, as he was the bench coach during Houston's title run in 2017.

Manfred also said Thursday the league will have new guidelines as it relates to the use of video equipment before the upcoming season starts.

"I think we have too much video available in real time right now," he said.

During a recent interview with Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci, Manfred said he has considered not making video rooms available to teams once games start. The only monitor available to a team could be a replay screen with an MLB security official standing next to it.

"That's the first path," he said. "It is an option. We have talked about it. We are not done on 2020 [protocols], no."

When asked by Verducci if more protocols will be in place by the start of the 2020 season, Manfred replied, "Absolutely."

Despite whatever protocol changes come in 2020, Manfred made it clear that MLB has zero tolerance for cheating.

"Whenever you have an allegation that the outcome of a game was altered by a rules violation," he said, "that falls into the category where fans believe the competition has been affected, and it’s an integrity issue. The integrity of the competition."

Manfred also told Verducci that MLB is looking into the Red Sox allegations with the "same thoroughness and vigor that we did Houston."

In the Houston investigation, which lasted three months, MLB interviewed more than 60 people and acquired more than 70,000 e-mails in addition to text messages obtained. According to Verducci, upon learning of the Boston investigation, owner John Henry asked Manfred if Red Sox personnel would be subject to the same type of disclosure. Manfred assured him that the same procedures will be used.

MLB learned of the possible Boston infraction during its investigation of the Astros. In 2017, MLB also fined the Red Sox for using Apple Watches to steal signs against the Yankees at Fenway Park.
