President Maithripala Sirisena installed Sri Lanka's controversial former strongman leader Mahinda Rajapakse as the country's new prime minister Friday, in a shock move that plunged the island into an unprecedented constitutional crisis.
Sirisena's office announced the surprise decision moments after he sacked incumbent premier Ranil Wickremesinghe, despite opponents saying he had no power to do so under the constitution.
Wickremesinghe insisted he was still the legitimate prime minister and would fight his dismissal in court.

A 12-year-old Thai boy, who became a social media celebrity by sharing exaggerated made-up photos of himself, has managed to get a house for his parents, Sin Chew Daily reported.
Known by the moniker “Nes”, he also promotes cosmetic products on his Instagram account.
The boy, who hails from Phang-Nga province, is often invited to attend events in Thailand and even in China.
“Nes is 12 years old, but Nes can build a house for dad,” he wrote in a recent Instagram post which showed a photo of the new house.

COLOMBO - A top Sri Lankan police official was arrested on Thursday over a suspected plot to kill President Maithripala Sirisena, police a spokesman said.
The alleged plot briefly threatened to cause tension between Sri Lanka and India, after an Indian newspaper report that Sirisena had accused India's intelligence services of involvement - a claim New Delhi and Colombo have both denied.
"The Criminal Investigation Division of police today arrested Nalaka De Silva after five days of questioning him," police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said.

A three-day search for a missing American tourist ended on Thursday when he was found sleeping among rocks on Satun's Koh Lipe island.
Charles Alexander Kosydar, 39, was taken to a local hospital for a check-up.
"We need to determine if he has abused any substances or has been harmed in any way," said Satun's deputy police chief Pol Colonel Nipon Hemasalamard. "We also will have to interview him."

Satun police, tourist police, immigration police, troops and harbour officials continued the search after two friends reported that Charles Alexander Kosydar, 39, disappeared early on Tuesday.
They told police they were drinking with Kosydar on Monday night until the early hours of Tuesday and the American left to swim at Pattaya Bay and did not return.

The driver of the train which derailed in north-eastern Taiwan on Sunday with a loss of at least 18 lives admitted he shut down the train's automatic protection system before the accident, a court said on Tuesday (Oct 23).
The driver, You Zhen-zhong, then steered the express train manually but neglected to keep it from going too fast, the Yilan District Court said in a statement published on its website.
