New on Sports Illustrated: Stanford QB Davis Mills, Two Others Out of Season Opener Due to COVID-19 Protocols

Mills made six starts in 2019 with 1,960 yards and 11 touchdowns. Wideout Connor Wedington and defensive end Trey LaBounty are also unavailable.

Less than two hours before the team's season opening game against Oregon, Stanford announced that three players—quarterback Davis Mills, wide receiver Connor Wedington and defensive end Trey LaBounty—would miss the game due to "COVID-19 test results and contact tracing protocols."

The school did not specify in its statement whether the players have all tested positive, or if they've been in contact with someone who has. Wedington announced via Twitter that he had tested negative for the virus.

The Pac-12 had two of its opening weekend games canceled prior to Saturday: Cal-Washington and Arizona-Utah. The game between Cal and Washington was canceled due to a Cal player testing positive, while Utah had multiple players test positive

The conference requires a minimum of 53 scholarship players available for a game to be played, with each position group having its own minimum requirement. Players do not need to have tested positive to be ruled unavailable for a game and can be held out due to contact tracing protocols.

Mills played in eight games with six starts for Stanford last season, completing 65.6% of his passes for 1,960 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. He set the school's single-game passing record with 504 yards in a loss to Washington State in 2019, and was named to the Maxwell Award and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm watch list prior to this season.

Wedington was second on the team with 51 receptions in 2019, with 506 yards and one touchdown. LaBounty is a junior who played in one game in 2018 and did not see any action during the 2019 season.

New on Sports Illustrated: 49ers WR Kendrick Bourne Tests Negative for COVID-19, Clearing Way for Return

Kendrick Bourne tested negative again on Friday, a day after the NFL and NFLPA are reportedly investigating both the 49ers and the player.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — After a week filled with bad news from injuries, a positive coronavirus test and a lopsided loss to Green Bay, the San Francisco 49ers finally got a piece of good news.

Receiver Kendrick Bourne tested negative for COVID-19 for a second straight day Friday, clearing the way for him and close contacts Brandon Aiyuk, Trent Williams and Deebo Samuel to return to the team.

Unfortunately for the 49ers it’s too late to help this week because San Francisco already played Thursday night and lost 34-17 to the Packers.

“I know it’s frustrating, but it is what it is,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday. “That’s what everyone in this world’s got to deal with right now. They’re doing that for the safety. Unfortunately, it wasn’t necessary, but I get why it did happen. So, got to deal with it and we obviously dealt with that last night. So, hopefully it won’t happen going forward.”

The Niners paid the price for the rules when they were forced to play without their two projected starting receivers for the game, Bourne and Aiyuk, as well as their starting left tackle in Williams. Samuel was already ruled out of the game with a hamstring injury.

Backup tackle Justin Skule allowed six pressures, according to Pro Football Focus, including one that led to an interception late in the first half that helped Green Bay open up a big lead.

Those absences were in addition to a run of injuries that sidelined quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, 2019 All-Pro tight end George Kittle, leading rusher Raheem Mostert, as well as several key defensive players.

“That’s the most frustrating part, we know that we can be so much better,” backup quarterback Nick Mullens said. “Even with the guys that we had on the field, myself included. We really feel like we can be a lot better and so with these couple of days away, just regroup, reset, and just foot on the gas for these upcoming weeks.”

New on Sports Illustrated: Aston Villa-Arsenal Preview

Mikel Arteta does says it will be long until Arsenal see the best of what Willian can have to offer, as the playmaker continues to build on his understanding of a slightly new role with the Gunners.

Willian joined Arsenal on a free transfer from Chelsea at the end of last season and provided two assists on his debut in a 3-0 win over Fulham in September.

While the 32-year-old has been unable to add to that tally of assists or score so far for Arsenal, Arteta has no doubt the Brazilian is approaching his best form after a stop-start opening to the campaign.

"I think he started really well in the first game against Fulham, then we changed from the three [up front] and then he had a little injury - he didn't have any time to train, he didn't have a pre-season, he was in later than the others," Arteta said ahead of Arsenal's clash with Aston Villa.

"I can see a development in the last few games, in the things I asked him to do are probably different to things that he's used to. He's getting better and we better, we all know the qualities he has and he's a great option to have."

Villa boss Dean Smith, meanwhile, lauded the form of his playmaker Jack Grealish, who has earned another England call up.

"I spoke a couple of years ago and I said that he would be judged on goals and assists, and he's improving in those aspects. He's got four goals and four assists already, so he's doing something right," said Smith, whose side have lost their last two games.

"He's working extremely hard, he stays humble and he needs to keep doing that. Our trust goes out to the international managers to manage our players appropriately."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Arsenal - Joe Willock

Willock impressed on Thursday as Arsenal claimed a 4-1 Europa League win over Molde, scoring his team's final goal - his second in as many games in the competition. His form should have earned him a place on the bench, at the very least, against Villa.

Aston Villa - Jack Grealish

Arsenal have conceded just seven league goals this term, so Grealish is likely to be crucial for Villa if they are to get a result on Sunday. Coming into this weekend's games, only Tottenham duo Harry Kane (14) and Son Heung-min (10) have been involved in more Premier League goals this season than Villa's captain (eight).

KEY OPTA FACTS

- Arsenal have won their last three home league games against Villa by an aggregate score of 12-2. However, only Chelsea (five), Manchester City and Manchester Utd (four each) have won more Premier League away games at the Emirates than Villa (three).

- Villa's 1-0 win against Arsenal at Villa Park in July ended a run of seven straight defeats against the Gunners in all competitions, across which they had conceded 23 goals.

- Arsenal lost 0-1 against Leicester in their last home league game, their first home league defeat of 2020.

Having won their first four Premier League games this season, Villa have now lost their last two. They've conceded as many goals in these two defeats as they had in their previous nine league games combined (seven).

- Arsenal have conceded fewer goals than any other Premier League side this season (seven). However, the Gunners haven't kept a clean sheet in any of their last six home league games, since beating Norwich City 4-0 in July.

- Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ended his five-game Premier League goal drought with the winning penalty at Manchester United last time out. Arsenal's captain has scored 62.5 per cent of his Premier League goals on Sundays (35 in 43 games).

New on Sports Illustrated: Former Rays Prospect Brandon Martin Convicted of Triple Murder

Former Rays prospect Brandon Martin was convicted Wednesday of three counts of first-degree murder.

Former Tampa Bay Rays prospect Brandon Martin was convicted Wednesday of three counts of first-degree murder for using a baseball bat to murder his father, uncle and a bystander in 2015.

In addition to the three murder counts, Martin was convicted of evading arrest, resisting arrest, stealing an automobile and injuring a police dog.

The jury is scheduled to hear testimony on Monday in the sentencing phase and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

The former first-round pick killed his father, 64-year-old Michael Martin; the elder Martin's brother-in-law, 51-year-old Ricky Lee Anderson; and 62-year-old Barry Swanson.

Just two days before the incident, which occurred on Sept. 17, 2015, the younger Martin was admitted to a California Department of Mental Health's emergency treatment facility for an evaluation. His admission came after he'd made threats against his disabled father.

The defendant was released from the facility on Sept. 17 and went straight to the elder man's residence, arriving in the evening. At the time, the family was having a security system installed in the aftermath of Martin's mental health evaluation. Swanson, an ADT company technician, was there as an installation consultation.

Brandon Martin went on to attack the three men with a baseball bat that had his name engraved on it. Michael Martin and Swanson died at the scene, while Anderson died days later of his injuries.

Following the incident, Brandon Martin stole Swanson's Ford Raptor pickup and hid out overnight before he was eventually taken into custody.

Brandon Martin, 27, was selected with the 38th selection in the first round of the 2011 MLB draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. According to Nathan Fenno of the Los Angeles TimesMartin received an $860,000 signing bonus and was compared to Yankees legend Derek Jeter.

Martin played three season in the organization and was released in early 2015.

He had no documented prior felony convictions.

New on Sports Illustrated: Report: NFL, NFLPA Investigate 49ers and Kendrick Bourne for Protocol Violations

The NFL is reportedly investigating whether wide receiver Kendrick Bourne was wearing his face covering properly and frequently enough.

A day after San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Kendrick Bourne tested positive for COVID-19, the NFL and NFLPA are now investigating both the team and the player for possible protocol violations. There may be punishment forthcoming, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapaport.

It is standard procedure for the NFL to look into all positive coronavirus tests; however, a league source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that they were also investigating whether Bourne was wearing his face covering properly and frequently enough.

Rapoport reported that Bourne's test came back negative on Thursday, and highlighted that testing positive one day and negative the next has happened many times before in the NFL.

He stated, "98% of the time, the players have been proven to be positive," a statistic that was echoed by Schefter.

Whether Bourne's test was a false positive is still unknown.

Although Bourne and the three other people he lives with tested negative, he, Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, Trent Williams will stay on the COVID-19 list Thursday.

There were no more positive tests to emerge, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, and the 49ers are still set to host the Green Bay Packers at 5:20 p.m. PDT on Thursday.

New on Sports Illustrated: Report: Several Steelers Players Buy Dinner for Allegheny County Ballot Counters

Several Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly decided on their own to foot the dinner bill for ballot counters at the Allegheny County voting site.

While Election Day is technically behind us, the results are still rolling in due to an unprecedented number of registered voters who decided to vote by mail, which means the ballot counters are still hard at work.

Several Pittsburgh Steelers players decided to buy dinner for those public servants at the Allegheny County voting site, NBC News photographer Paul Rigney reported

ESPN's Brooke Pryor tweeted that she was told the move wasn't necessarily one made by the organization, rather a decision made by a few players.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer confirmed that the players worked with the Steelers CR department

Pennsylvania is one of the states whose voters most heavily opted to vote by mail, and Allegheny County is among the highest in the country in terms of how many absentee ballots they need to process. As of 6:30 p.m. EDT on Nov. 4, the AP estimated that 88% of the votes had been counted, and President Donald Trump was in the lead by 260,192 votes. Most of the mail-in votes are expected to be for former Vice President Joe Biden, however, making the state's electoral result still unclear.

This is not the first instance this election cycle of the Steelers supporting election efforts. Last week, it was announced that the franchise teamed up with local organization Citrone 33 to help provide 5,000 masks to Allegheny County election officials.

New on Sports Illustrated: Report: 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo Seeking Multiple Medical Opinions on Injured Ankle, QB May Undergo Season-Ending Surgery

Jimmy Garoppolo is gathering multiple medical opinions about whether he will need season-ending surgery for the new sprain.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Tuesday that the high ankle injury quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered in Sunday's loss against the Seattle Seahawks was "essentially a whole new one, just on the same foot."

The coach continued, saying that it was more serious than the sprain he suffered in Week 2 against the New York Jets and that he may require season-ending surgery.

The quarterback, who turned 29 on Nov. 2, is in the process of gathering multiple medical opinions before deciding if he'll need surgery.

"When you have those high ankle sprains, you re-injure them a lot," Shanahan said. "But it was different the way that he did it, so it's basically doing it all over again in a different way. ... Whatever's best for him, long-term, is obviously what we'll decide on. But if he does need the surgery, then it'll be all year; if not, then hoping six weeks, get a chance to get back at the end."

Shanahan said he did not "regret bringing him back any of the times," and wasn't "risking injury by going further with it." Garoppolo was able to play two more weeks after the 43-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Oct. 11, reportedly being healthier each game, before getting re-injured on Nov. 1.

Garoppolo will be placed on injured reserve for the foreseeable future alongside George Kittle, who fractured his foot

The 49ers have a short turnaround with hosting the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night. Nick Mullens will start at QB with Ross Dwelley likely to step in for Kittle, per ESPN's Nick Wagoner. Kickoff is slated for 8:20 p.m. ET.

New on Sports Illustrated: LeBron James's Donations Help Make Florida Felons Eligible to Vote

James and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg are among those who paid court fees to allow nearly 13,000 Florida felons to vote.

LeBron James aided an effort to pay court fines and fees for nearly 13,000 Florida felons in recent months, per The Tampa Bay Times' Lawrence Mower and Langston Taylor.

The initiative led by James and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg made the nearly 13,000 individuals eligible to vote in the state of Florida for the 2020 election. James, Bloomberg and various other celebrities paid a total of roughly $27 million in fines and fees, per Mower and Taylor.

“We want communities to get better by having more voices heard, and the quicker people are able to be reintegrated into the community, the better,” Neil Volz, the deputy director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition told Mower and Taylor. “If people choose to engage in that moment or not, that’s on them.”

Neither James's organization, More Than a Vote, nor Bloomberg commented on their respective donations.

Florida felons appeared to have their voting rights restored in 2018 after the passage of Amendment 4. But the enaction of the amendment was blocked by the state legislature, which ruled that felons must pay all fees and fines before regaining their right to vote. An appeal may be filed to the Supreme Court, with the deadline set for January, per Mower and Taylor

New on Sports Illustrated: Forde-Yard Dash: Jim Harbaugh or Ed Orgeron? Pick Your Coaching Poison

There are four coaches in college football making $8 million or more this season, and half of them got kicked in the teeth Saturday.

Forty names, games, teams and minutiae making news in college football (“We Are … Last in the East” T-shirts sold separately in State College)

MORE DASH: Fourth Playoff Spot | Intriguing November Matchups

THIRD QUARTER: PICK YOUR COACHING POISON

There are four coaches in the game making $8 million or more this season, and half of them got kicked in the teeth Saturday. They were the kind of losses that make everyone look and say, “Wow, that’s getting really ugly.” But the career arc of the two coaches is distinctly different.

College football fans, would you rather have see your favorite team have a Jim Harbaugh (21) tenure, or an Ed Orgeron (22) tenure?

On Saturday, Harbaugh’s Michigan Wolverines were upset by rival Michigan State, a team that couldn’t have looked more inept the week before in losing to Rutgers. For Harbaugh, this marked by far his worst loss in six seasons on the job—the Wolverines were favored by 21.5 points, yet they were outplayed and never led. In Harbaugh’s time at Michigan, he’d never lost a game when favored by more than 10.5 points.

This was new terrain in Harbaugh’s increasingly unsatisfying run in Ann Arbor. His track record prior to Saturday was winning almost all the games he’s supposed to win (47–8 as a favorite) and losing the games he wasn’t supposed to win (1–10 as an underdog or in a pick’em game). This was a new turn toward underachieving that brought many Michigan fans closer to the realization that the coach hailed as a conquering hero isn’t going to do anything truly heroic at his alma mater.

He’s 0–5 against Ohio State, with an increasing distance between the Buckeyes and Wolverines in the past four meetings: an infamous inch in 2016; an 11-point loss as a 12-point underdog in ’17; a 23-point defrocking in ’18 as a slight favorite; and a 29-point embarrassment last year. The losses to Ohio State underscore the fact that Harbaugh has never hit the high notes here the way he did at Stanford (a 12–1 season and No. 4 final ranking in 2010) and in the NFL with the 49ers (an appearance in the 2013 Super Bowl).

Harbaugh’s Michigan record is 48–19 overall, a .716 winning percentage that ranks slightly behind the best coaches in school history (Yost, Crisler, Schembechler, Carr) and ahead of most of the rest. The program hasn’t fallen apart on his watch by any means—it’s demonstrably better than where it was under Rich Rodriguez (23) and Brady Hoke (24). There have been no scandals on his watch.

But Jim Harbaugh wasn’t hired and paid all that money to be an average Michigan coach. The program’s all-time winning percentage is .729, which means that’s exactly what he is.

It’s hard to find a direct comparison to Harbaugh’s Michigan tenure. Among those that bear some resemblance, having been hired as saviors and then delivering something less than savior results:

Johnny Majors (25) at Tennessee. He came home to his alma mater after leading Pittsburgh to the 1976 national championship at the age of 41 behind the running of Tony Dorsett. After four seasons of struggle, Majors turned the Volunteers into a winning program but never seriously got into the national title hunt. In 16 seasons he won two SEC titles and shared a third, with a pair of top five finishes in the polls after bowl wins. Overall winning percentage: .645.

Bill Walsh (26) second act at Stanford 1992. After a pair of successful seasons on The Farm in the late 1970s, Walsh was lured up the Bay by the 49ers. You may have heard of his work there, which included three Super Bowl titles and modernizing the passing game. After four seasons away from coaching he surprisingly returned to Stanford, where the first season was very good (10-3 and a Top Ten ranking) but the next two were busts before Walsh re-retired.

John Robinson (27) second act at USC. The first stint (1976-82) included three top-two finishes in the polls, including a share of the 1978 national title. Then Robinson went to the Los Angeles Rams and coached them to six playoff appearances and a pair of NFC title game losses. The return to USC lasted five seasons in the 1990s, the best of which ended with a 1995 Rose Bowl victory and a No. 11 ranking.

When Orgeron’s LSU tenure reaches the 67-game mark where Harbaugh’s is currently, what will his winning percentage look like? Through 54 games it’s a sassy .778 — best in school history for anyone who coached 10 or more contests at the school. But the trajectory is potentially Chizikian (28).

When Gene Chizik was at Auburn, he captured lightning and Cam Newton in a bottle, producing a 2010 national championship and an undefeated season. Then the magic abruptly left: the Tigers went 11-14 the next two seasons and Chizik was fired.

After LSU’s 15-0 run last year, Orgeron lost his Heisman Trophy quarterback, his offensive play-caller, his defensive coordinator and a flotilla of other talent. This year’s team is 2-3, and it’s a baaaaad 2-3: the Tigers split their first four games against teams that currently have losing records, then were annihilated by a middling Auburn team 48-11 Saturday. That’s the program’s worst loss since 1996. Given the remaining schedule, 4-6 looks entirely possible, which would give LSU its first losing record this century.

“We’re not that far away,” Orgeron said Monday. “We’ve got to get better coaching. We’ve got to get better players. This is LSU and we’re going to do that.”

Can Orgeron get it back together in 2021? Sure, it’s possible. He’s recruited on a level that would actually make it difficult to not return to winning at a high percentage. But it’s also possible that things stay sideways and his LSU tenure ends (at some point) with one shining moment and a sour aftertaste.

In addition to Chizik, the comparison could be Larry Coker (29) at Miami. Like Orgeron, Coker was promoted from within after at least one high-profile head coach said no. Coker inherited perhaps the most talented team in college football history in 2001, and promptly won the national title. The next year he came within a controversial pass interference flag in the end zone of back-to-back undefeated titles. From there the results were 11-2, 9-3, 9-3, 7-6, and he was surprisingly fired.

Best Coker could do after that was becoming the first coach at UTSA, He went 26-32 in five seasons.

Back to the original question: fans would take the Orgeron/Chizik resume over the Harbaugh resume, right? You’d sign up for a few dark years if they followed an undefeated national title run. That’s preferable to a succession of seasons in which a team is always good but never great.

LSU fans living through the Orgeron Era will always have 2019. Michigan fans living through the Harbaugh Era will always have... what, exactly?

New on Sports Illustrated: Sabrina Ionescu Undergoes Ankle Procedure, Eyes Return in 2021

Ionescu: "With the long offseason, I am committed to returning in 2021 fully prepared to rejoin my team and jumpstart my WNBA career."

New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu underwent a "minor ankle procedure," on Monday, the team announced

Ionescu injured her ankle in her third career game on July 31, two days after a 33-point performance against the Dallas Wings. Her injury was deemed a high-ankle sprain, and she missed the remainder of New York's 2020 season.

“With the long offseason, I am committed to returning in 2021 fully prepared to rejoin my team and jumpstart my WNBA career,” Ionescu said in a statement on Monday. “My rehab has been going very well and I look forward to getting back on the court.”

Ionescu was selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft in April. She was a two-time Wooden Award winner at Oregon, and she is the only Division I player to ever record 2,000 points, 1,000 assists and 1,000 rebounds in a career.

New York will hope to get a boost from Ionescu in her first full season in 2021. The Liberty finished 2–20 in 2020, failing to reach the playoffs for the third straight season.

New on Sports Illustrated: Report: Trent Brown Hospitalized After Pregame IV Mishap

Brown will reportedly stay overnight in a Cleveland hospital for further evaluation.

Raiders offensive tackle Trent Brown was hospitalized on Sunday after a "mishap" with his pregame IV, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero

Brown was inactive for Las Vegas' win over the Browns on Sunday in Cleveland. He was taken out of the locker room in a wheelchair after air entered his bloodstream during the IV insertion, per Rapoport and Pelissero. Brown will reportedly stay in Cleveland overnight for additional tests.

"We're just going to say that [Brown] got ill here in the locker room and he's being evaluated right now," Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said postgame. "We'll update you as soon as we something. But I'm told everything is OK. We were expecting Trent to play today, he had a great practice on Friday."

Brown was activated off the COVID-19 list on Friday. He has played just two games in 2020, most recently appearing in Las Vegas' win over the Chiefs on Oct. 11. The Oklahoma product signed a four-year, $66 million contract with the Raiders in 2019.

Las Vegas was able to control the line of scrimmage for much of Sunday's contest despite Brown's absence. The Raiders rushed for 208 yards in their 16-6 victory, holding possession for nearly 38 minutes.

The Raiders sit second in the AFC West at 4–3 following Sunday's victory. They will face the Chargers on Nov. 8, with kickoff slated for 4:05 p.m. ET.

Plus, Joe Burrow carries the Bengals to the day’s biggest upset, Tua’s debut, the Rams’ dud in Miami, the AFC East becomes a two-team race (and the Patriots aren’t one of them), and much more.

Reacting and overreacting to everything that happened in the Week 8 Sunday afternoon games...

Things That Made Me Giddy

Steelers Survive Another Classic With Baltimore: A week ago in Nashville, the Steelers were much more dominant than the final score indicated. This week, the Ravens defense was absolutely taking it to them. Whether you consider it Lamar Jackson making mistakes or the Steelers defense forcing those mistakes (it was a mix, but maybe a bit more of the former), Pittsburgh hung around long enough to figure it out offensively. The Ravens outgained them 457 to 221, but about half of the Steelers’ yardage came on two two long touchdown drives in the final 20 minutes, and situationally they were more than up to the task. The defense held on a fourth-and-3 in the red zone, and Minkah Fitzpatrick played the ball perfectly for the break up on the game’s final snap. These are things that 7-0 teams do.

Because John Harbaugh Was Still Complaining About It an Hour Later: One more look at the complete lack of a penalty on the final play in Baltimore. This is perfectly played and unworthy of even the slightest bit of controversy.

Dalvin Cook Is a One-Man Army: With the wind howling in Green Bay and the Vikings even more reluctant to put the ball in the air (ultimately, 15 dropbacks vs. 49 runs), Cook ended up with 32 touches for 226 yards—many of them after contact—and 4 TDs. If you are going to pay a running back, this is what you want to get from him.

Joe Burrow Doesn’t Need an Offensive Line: The Bengals’ O-line was already one of the NFL’s worst, and on Sunday they were playing four backups—and it showed. But Burrow consistently navigated through the chaos, going 26-for-37 for 249 and not taking a single sack (largely due to his escapability). The numbers weren’t mind-blowing, but this is a game the Bengals had little right being competitive in, let alone winning decisively.

William Jackson Erases A.J. Brown: It took until midway through the third quarter for Brown to register a catch for positive yardage, and the late-game stat-padding wasn’t nearly enough to get the Titans back in the game. Jackson continues to be one of the most underrated players in the NFL (and if you’re belatedly wondering why the Bengals defense looked so bad in blowing it to the Browns last week, Jackson’s absence was a big reason.)

Josh Jacobs Is a Mudder: The Raiders’ rushing attack hasn’t been quite what they wanted it to be through six games, but on Sunday, on an icy, muddy track in Cleveland, they rode it to victory. Jacobs had 31 carries for 128, and as a team Vegas rushed 45 times for 208, controlling the clock for nearly 38 minutes and winning ugly. They're 4-3 with four very winnable games among the next five on their schedule.

The Mighty Right Hand of Justin Zimmer: The recent practice-squad call-up DT (and one-time Montreal Alouette) sealed the win in Buffalo with the strip of Cam Newton—the Patriots were in range for a game-tying field goal, and maybe on their way to a game-winning touchdown. It’s just another reminder that only the great ones wear No. 61.

The Colts Win Their Way: Conservative offense, situational football and opportunistic defense. It never felt like they were gaining separation in Detroit, but the offense kept the ball for nearly 38 minutes, opened a lead and the defense got two late takeaways. That's how Indy cruised to a 20-point victory.

Le’Veon Bell Revenge Game: Yes! Taking it to the team that awarded him $27 million guaranteed when the market wasn’t there and recently released him so he could sign with the reigning Super Bowl champions. (Six carries for seven yards, three catches for 31, by the way.)

Regrets

Lamar Jackson Takes a Step Back: The Steelers will make a lot of quarterbacks look bad, but Jackson was downright sloppy on Sunday, reckless with the ball on a day when the Ravens defense was making his job easy. He was responsible for putting Pittsburgh’s first 14 points on the board, unacceptable against a quality opponent and turning what should have been a double-digit win into a loss.

Lamar Disregarding Game Situation: He had already thrown a pick-six and another near-interception at the end of the first half at this point. But this interception, on the Ravens’ first play from scrimmage in the second half, was unforgivable. Baltimore was up 10, their defense was in complete control and it was first-and-10, so there’s no reason to put the ball in danger. But this is beyond “in danger”—everyone has eyes on him, this ball isn't going to get there. And if that’s not enough, it was also very reminiscent of an ugly pick Jackson threw in Pittsburgh last season.

Rams Get ALL the Mistakes Out of Their System: How they ended up having to travel three time zones on a short week is something for Howard Katz and his team of schedule-makers to answer at a Congressional hearing, but the otherwise efficient Rams managed to cram four turnovers and allow a punt return TD into the game’s first 30 minutes at Miami.

Bills Run Defense Is an Issue: Facing a Patriots offense with no real threat in the passing game—New England was overly conservative in passing situations on Sunday, understandable considering the past two weeks—the Bills still got gashed by the ground game. New England ran it 34 times for 188 yards, and you had the feeling that if not for Justin Zimmer stripping Newton deep in Buffalo territory on the final drive, the shorthanded Patriots were going to steal one in Orchard Park.

Matt Judon’s Accidental Right Hook: Connects with the official’s forearm—the most fragile part of the human body—and earns him a first-half ejection.

Moments We’ll Tell Our Grandkids About

Who’s Tripping Down the Streets of the City / Smiling at Everybody She Sees / Who’s Reaching Out to Capture a Moment: Everyone knows it's Windy.

Mahomes Perfects the Underhand Flip: Someone’s putting those Tom Emanski tapes to good use.

T.J. Watt Becomes the New ‘Why Not Both?’ Meme: His responsibility is the back here, but he still swallows up the most dangerous running QB the league has ever seen. Sorry, little girl from taco commercial.

Nyheim Hines’s Celebration: The competition committee should really consider adding a seventh point for a touchdown if you do this immediately afterward…

Tua’s First Drop-Back: Yeah, those NFL pockets are a little tighter than the ones at Tuscaloosa.

It Got Better Though!: This is an accurate throw and an absurd catch by DeVante Parker through the pass interference for Tua’s first NFL touchdown pass.

What We’ll Be Talking About This Week

Patriots Played Their Game and It Wasn’t Enough: They ran it and controlled the clock on offense, and limited big plays on defense. The lack of a passing offense (along with Cam Newton’s struggles, they had no Julian Edelman or N’Keal Harry in Buffalo) and struggles of their run defense were there again. Sitting at 2-5, if they have a chance to sell at the deadline they might as well do it.

It’s Bills vs. Dolphins in the AFC East: Buffalo has a game-and-a-half lead and got to four wins within the division with the victory over the Patriots at home, but still have to go to Foxboro and host Miami. And with the Bills’ schedule getting rough over the next month, it might be Week 17, when the Dolphins go to Orchard Park, that decides it.

Tua’s First Test: Incomplete: I know, “incomplete” is a class grade not a grade on an individual exam. The point is, with a first half featuring four defensive takeaways and a Jakeem Grant punt-return TD, there wasn’t much for Tua to do in his first start. The limited sample size showed an accurate passer on the short and intermediate levels, and a guy who will have to get used to managing tight NFL pockets after playing in some wide-open spaces at the college level. At the moment, his career trajectory ranges from surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer to all-time draft bust.
