New on Sports Illustrated: Former Bears Chairman Michael McCaskey Passes Away After Long Battle With Cancer

McCaskey joined the organization in 1983 and was the NFL's Executive of the Year in 1985.

Former Chicago Bears chairman Michael McCaskey has died after a long battle with cancer, the team announced on Saturday. He was 76.

The grandson of George C. Halas, McCaskey joined the organization in 1983, succeeding his grandfather as the team's president and chief executive officer. He served in that role until 1999, when he became the Bears' chairman. He was voted the NFL's Executive of the Year following Chicago's Super Bowl championship season in 1985.

In 2005, McCaskey co-founded the Bears Care charity, which has raised over $21 million for more than 100 agencies in the surrounding area. These fundraising efforts have helped a wide array of programs, including education, youth athletics and medical research and health awareness programs focusing on breast and ovarian cancer.

"Mike was already successful in every sense of the word when he took over for George S. Halas after the passing of 'Papa Bear' in 1983," the McCaskey family said in a statement. "We are grateful to Mike for overseeing arguably the greatest team in NFL history, and for his many years of service to the Bears and to us. The oldest of eleven siblings has many duties thrust upon him, not all of them pleasant, yet Mike handled them all with grace and patience. Although Mike's passing was not brought on by the novel coronavirus, our family, like so many people, is not able to gather and grieve together at this time. Our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones to COVID-19. Our focus in the coming days will be to celebrate Mike's life, and be whatever source of support we can be to John and Kathryn and those they love."

McCaskey graduated from Yale in 1965 as a philosophy and psychology major. He volunteered in the Peace Corps for two years, and taught science, English and music to junior high students in Ethiopia. Before joining the Bears, he taught organizational behavior and management at UCLA, and later became an associate professor at Harvard Business School.

"My heart is heavy as I think about Michael McCaskey and can't believe he is no longer with us," said Bears president and CEO Ted Phillips. "His fierce love of the Bears was unmatched as was his intellectual capacity and thirst for knowledge on a myriad of subjects. Michael displayed a professorial presence that could be challenging, but was also inspiring. I will be forever grateful for the many opportunities for growth that he provided me, as well as for his trust and support. Michael always strived to do things the right way with high character and with the Bears best interests always paramount. Michael was a good man, gone much too soon. He presided over the only Super Bowl Championship Chicago Bears team in 1985, and I know he is still smiling about that magical season. God bless Michael and his family."

The oldest of 11 children by Ed and Virginia McCaskey, Michael is survived by his two children, John and Kathryn, and one grandson, Jackson.

New on Sports Illustrated: Watchdog Pursues Subpoena for Documents in Alleged Leaking of Kobe Bryant Helicopter Crash Photos

Los Angeles County sheriffs allegedly leaked photos from the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant and eight others.

The law enforcement watchdog for Los Angeles County is attempting to subpoena documents connected to allegations that Sheriff Alex Villanueva ordered his deputies to cover up evidence of his department leaking graphic images from the helicopter crash that took the lives of Kobe Bryant and eight others.

In a letter this week to the chair of the Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission, Inspector General Max Huntsman said: “The documents are relevant to a pending inquiry into allegations that the Sheriff directed the destruction of evidence and suppressed an administrative investigation to avoid negative publicity,” according to a report by Alene Tchekmedyian of the Los Angeles Times.

The Times originally reported in February that deputies on the scene of the crash had shared photos. The report came after somebody filed a complaint to the Sheriff's Department three days later saying that a young deputy was showing graphic crash scene photos at the Baja California Bar & Grill in Norwalk.

"No fewer than eight sheriff’s deputies were at the scene snapping cell-phone photos of the dead children, parents, and coaches," the claim said. "As the Department would later admit, there was no investigative purpose for deputies to take pictures at the crash site. Rather, the deputies took photos for their own personal purposes."

After the existence of the photos was reported, Villanueva said he ordered deputies to delete their photos, which could be considered destruction of evidence. In April, the office requested a compilation of documents and information, including the names of anyone who saw or shared the photographs.

Vanessa Bryant is seeking damages for emotional and mental anguish as a result of deputies sharing these photos.

"Mrs. Bryant has suffered an immense tragedy by losing her husband and daughter," the claim says. "Her grief has been compounded by the severe emotional distress caused by the sheriff’s deputies' misconduct and the Sheriff’s Department’s mishandling of that misconduct."

New on Sports Illustrated: Lawyer for Quinton Dunbar Says Seahawks CB Has Five Witnesses Exonerating Client From Robbery

The lawyer for Seahawks CB Quinton Dunbar says five witnesses have signed affidavits that exonerate the CB of any involvement in the armed robbery.

The defense lawyer for Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar says five witnesses have signed affidavits that exonerate the cornerback of any involvement in the armed robbery that took place in Florida this week, according to the Miami Herald's David Ovalle.

Michael Grieco, the lawyer for Dunbar, said he has presented the affidavits to the local Broward State Attorney's office, but that prosectors are requiring Dunbar turn himself in.

"All of the affidavits indicate my client is innocent," Greico said.

Dunbar was issued an arrest warrant Thursday night on four counts of armed robbery with a firearm. The Giants cornerback was also issued an arrest warrant of four counts of armed robbery with a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm for his role in the same incident.

The incident in question occurred May 13, according to the police affidavit. Both men were alleged to have been involved in a robbery, which saw money and valuables stolen from other witnesses at a party.

Per the police affidavit, Dunbar was seen assisting Baker, but there were conflicting witness reports on whether the Seahawks CB was armed.

Per the Miami Herald, neither has a criminal history in Miami-Dade or Broward counties.

According to Sports Illustrated legal analyst Michael McCann, armed robbery with a firearm has a mandatory minimum sentencing law, 10-20-Life, for felonies in which a firearm is used or attempted to be used.

"We are aware of the situation involving Quinton Dunbar and still gathering information. We will defer all further comment to league investigators and local authorities," Seattle said in a statement.

Dunbar recorded 37 total tackles in 11 games for Washington last year, his fifth in the league. Seattle acquired him in a trade in late March.

New on Sports Illustrated: Giants’ Deandre Baker, Seahawks’ Quinton Dunbar Issued Arrest Warrant for Multiple Armed Robbery Charges

Giants cornerback Deandre Baker and Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar were issued warrants for their arrests on Thursday evening.

Giants cornerback Deandre Baker and Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar were issued warrants for their arrests on Thursday evening, the Miramar, Fl. police department announced.

Baker was issued an arrest warrant of four counts of armed robbery with a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. Dunbar has a warrant to arrest for four counts of armed robbery with a firearm.

Each player has no bail amount set for the warrant.

The incident in question occurred May 13, according to the police affidavit. The NFL players were allegedly at a party that began in the evening, and Baker was seen pointing his semi-automatic gun at one of the party's attendees. Baker was alleged to have directed two other individuals to take money and valuables from the other attendees of the party. According to the affidavit, Dunbar assisted Baker in taking the money and valuables at the direction of Baker.

In the affidavit, Baker is alleged to have knowingly committed an armed robbery, taking the money and watches of an alleged victim(s) using force. Per the affidavit, the Giants cornerback knowingly committed the act of aggravated assault with the firearm as he "intentionally and unlawfully threatened the victim(s) with a firearm, creating a reasonable fear that violence or harm" was imminent.

Baker and Dunbar were alleged to have lost more than $70,000 two days before the date of the incident at a different Miami-area party. Per the affidavit, vehicles used by the assailants were pre-positioned outside the residence.

"We are aware of the situation," the Giants said in a statement, per ESPN. "We have been in contact with DeAndre. We have no further comment at this time."

Baker was selected in the first round of the draft last year by the Giants. He recorded 61 total tackles and started in 15 games in his rookie year.

Dunbar recorded 37 total tackles in 11 games for Washington last year, his fifth in the league. Seattle acquired him in a trade in late March.

New on Sports Illustrated: Report: Marlins to Furlough Up to 100 Team Employees

The move will impact around 40% of the Marlins' baseball operations staff.

The Miami Marlins will furlough 90 to 100 of their employees temporarily beginning on June 1, according to ESPN

The move will impact 40% of Miami's baseball operations staff. Employees' furlough status will be evaluated monthly, and their health benefits will continue through the end of October.

The move comes weeks after Marlins chief executive officer Derek Jeter announced he would be forgoing his salary on an indefinite basis while baseball is shut down. Other team executives agreed to take pay cuts, while the entire baseball operations staff had their salaries guaranteed through at least May 31.

In April, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred informed teams that they would be allowed to furlough and reduce the pay of team employees during the coronavirus pandemic. He also announced pay reductions for himself and others at the league office.

"As part of our effort to protect the organization, my senior staff and I have decided to reduce our compensation by an average of 35% for 2020 to help the organization weather this terrible storm,'' said Manfred, according to ESPN.

The league and the players' association are currently negotiating a proposal that would begin the 2020 season in early July.

South Korea's Moon warns of Covid-19 second wave as cases rebound

SEOUL - South Korea warned of a second wave of the new coronavirus on Sunday as infections rebounded to a one-month high, just as the authorities were starting to ease some pandemic restrictions.

“It’s not over until it’s over,” President Moon Jae-in told the nation, saying a new cluster shows the virus can spread widely at any time, and warning of a second wave late this year.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reported 34 new infections, the highest since April 9, after a small outbreak emerged around a slew of nightclubs, prompting the authorities to temporary close all nightly entertainment facilities around the capital.

The death toll remained at 256.

Health Minister Park Neung-hoo said the government will decide on whether it will reopen schools in stages starting from May 13 as planned after examining the impact of the nightclub cases for two to three days.

New on Sports Illustrated: It's Time for Boxing to Answer The Bell and Return to the Ring

UFC 249 provided combat sports with a blueprint for resuming during the coronavirus pandemic. It's time for boxing to follow suit.

The UFC has gone.

Boxing, you’re on deck.

On Saturday, UFC became the first major American sport to hold a live event since the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in mid-March. In Jacksonville, Florida—a state that has deemed pro sports essential, effectively opening it up for business—the combat sports company held UFC 249, an 11-fight card headlined by Justin Gaethje’s lightweight win over Tony Ferguson.

The result: A relatively seamless, albeit different, event.

For weeks, White had been the subject of intense criticism for his decision to push forward with live events during the pandemic. An April show was scuttled after California officials complained to ESPN, UFC’s broadcast partner, about the event. As White went ahead with this one, the hits came from everywhere. Former UFC star Mark Hunt accused White of not caring about fighters’ health. Hall of Fame boxing promoter Bob Arum called White’s action “cowboy behavior” and declared he “had very little respect” for White. Media challenged White’s decision to put on a show.

White ignored all of it.

And right now, he looks pretty smart.

UFC 249 wasn’t without incident. Ronaldo Souza, a middleweight scheduled to fight on the show, tested positive for coronavirus a day before the fight. Two of Souza’s cornerman did, too. UFC removed them from the host hotel, announced they were self-isolating and continued with the show.

Effectively, UFC implemented a strategy for a positive test that other sports leagues are actively talking about.

The show itself was fine. It was strange to see fighters walk to the ring without a crowd roaring behind them. It was stranger to see devastating blows landed without the soundtrack of an audience with them. In post-fight interviews, fighters spoke of being able to hear the commentary of cage-side announcers. But the television experience was fairly normal, completely if you watched with the sound off, as some did. The fights themselves were not impacted. And if White is to be believed, pay-per-view buys are expected to be enormous.

“I think it worked out great,” White told ESPN. “The system that we set up works. We found out [Souza] was positive and all the other tests were negative. We’ll do over 1,100 tests this week (UFC has two more cards over the next seven days). If you test that much, I’m sure we’ll find someone else is positive.”

The event worked. White will do more.

When will boxing follow suit?

Combat sports are uniquely equipped to hold major events during this pandemic. Save for the upper echelon of fighters, live gates are dwarfed by broadcast revenue. The number of people needed to pull an event off is relatively small. The strain on testing isn’t what it would be for team sports. White estimated UFC administered 1,200 coronavirus tests last week to roughly 300 people. Three tested positive.

Could that number grow? Certainly. Could someone fall seriously ill? Possibly. But if you are waiting for the coronavirus threat to disappear before you put on a live sporting event, you will be waiting awhile. It could be a year before there is a vaccine. There’s no proof the threat will dissipate in the warmer summer months. Experts, like Dr. Anthony Fauci, are predicting another outbreak of the virus in the fall. Sports will have to decide: Do we shutter until a vaccine is available or do we do the best we can to mitigate the risk?

UFC has made its decision. Now boxing must make one, too.

Right now, there is no boxing scheduled in the U.S. Arum has talked about doing shows in June. Golden Boy has submitted a proposal to DAZN, its broadcast partner, that would begin in July, with the return of rising star Ryan Garcia. Eddie Hearn is chomping at the bit to get back.

But who will be first? Who will look to the UFC as the model combat sports should follow?

Boxing should be eager to get in the mix. It’s a sport that craves the exposure that comes with this kind of open runway. How many more eyeballs were on UFC on Saturday that otherwise would have been on something else? How many more people would watch boxing if it was the only game in town?

Take Garcia. There’s an argument that Garcia is the most appealing prospect among the 25-and-under crew. He’s undefeated, with a powerful left hook. He’s good looking, well spoken and has six—six—million Instagram followers behind him. He’s coming off back-to-back spectacular first-round knockouts. He has the reigning Trainer of the Year, Eddy Reynoso, in his corner and the biggest star in boxing, Canelo Alvarez, backing him up.

You want to attract fans to boxing? Let a sports-starved country get to know Ryan Garcia.

Sports have been right to play it safe. Sports should not be happening while hospitals are overextended. League’s shouldn’t be gobbling up tests while the sick are scrambling to get them. But hospitalizations have flattened, and in most states are on the decline. Hard-hit states like New York and California are preparing to open up its economies. The NBA, itself anxious to open up, has reportedly authorized teams in Orlando and Los Angeles to test asymptomatic players and staffers.

It’s not perfect, but perfect is a long way away. UFC showed that a combat sports event can be pulled off, that safety can be maintained, that a television product can be created under difficult circumstances. White will march on, with two more shows in Jacksonville and plans to do international events on an undisclosed island White has been giddily talking about. Mixed martial arts is officially back.

Hey, boxing: Time to get back to work.
