The debate will rage all summer long amongst fantasy players as to when to step out and invest high draft capital on Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. In only three years removed from winning the Heisman Trophy, he set the NFL single-season rushing record for a quarterback after gaining 1,206 yards on the ground in 2019. In 2019, Jackson became only the second quarterback in NFL history to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards in a season, helping him earn NFL MVP honors in just his second season in the league.

Michael Vick previously held the quarterback single-season rushing record thanks to his dynamic season with the Falcons in 2006; gaining 1,039 yards on the ground.

What Are the Oddsmakers Saying?

Jackson ran for 695 yards his rookie year, but only started seven games. After exceeding 1,200 in 2019, FanDuel Sportsbook currently has Jackson’s total rushing yards number in 2020 set at 919.5 yards.

Jackson’s Fantasy Value in 2020

In his first full season as the Ravens starter, the former Louisville standout completed 66.1 percent of his passes for 3,127 yards and 36 touchdowns. Jackson guided the Ravens to a 14-2 record and an AFC North crown through his performance both through the air and on the ground. Even more impressive is Jackson finished as the league leader in touchdown passes; despite only 401 attempts (26.7 per game) ranking 26th amongst all NFL QBs.

Jackson’s talents were on full display when he took his game to the next level in 2019. While leading the club with 6.9 yards per carry, he also found the endzone seven times on the ground; delighting fantasy owners who invested mid-round draft capital in acquiring him last summer.

To put his rushing feat in perspective, Jackson’s 1,206 rushing yards last season ranked sixth among all runners in 2019. That’s ahead of star running backs including Saquon Barkley, Dalvin Cook, Aaron Jones and Alvin Kamara. Arizona Cardinals rookie Kyler Murray posted the second most rushing yards with 544, a distant 662 yards behind Jackson.

For where he was selected in drafts at the Fantasy Football World Championships (FFWC), Jackson surpassed all value and carried fantasy owners in 2019. 2020 projections indicate another monster year is on deck for Jackson and the Ravens, who will compete with Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes for the first quarterback off draft boards this summer. The big difference is with an early ADP, Jackson will command valuable first or second round draft capital from any fantasy player looking to acquire him this season.

Betting Advice:

Baltimore was the top scoring offense last season, averaging 33.2 points per game, slotting in second overall with 407.6 yards per game. As we often stress to bettors here at SI Gambling, it's imperative to always shop around for the best numbers. Jackson eclipsing 1,000 yards again would mark just the third time a quarterback has accomplished that feat in a single season.

RavenCountry reporter Todd Karpovich points out that although the Ravens have playmakers on both sides of the ball, there is one player who easily lands atop his list.

“Jackson became just the second player in NFL history to win the NFL's Most Valuable Player by a unanimous vote, joining Tom Brady in 2010… His main focus is now leading the Ravens to a Super Bowl victory.”

Although each of the previous three quarterbacks to rush for more than 900 yards in a season recorded less than 600 rushing yards the following year, my model has Jackson not seeing the regression most anticipated in 2020. Since both Mahomes and Jackson are so closely ranked in my projections, I will be sure to own as many shares of both Mahomes and Jackson as I can in fantasy leagues this season. My model has his rushing total in 2020 with a projection of 952 yards. Therefore, I see value in going over the number currently being offered by FanDuel sportsbook.

In a guest column for The Cincinnati Enquirer, Joey Votto discusses how his views have changed since the killing of George Floyd.

Count Reds first baseman Joey Votto among those in the sports world who have felt compelled to speak out in the aftermath of George Floyd's killing.

On Sunday, the six-time All-Star and former National League MVP penned a guest column for The Cincinnati Enquirer. In it, he discussed how his immediate reaction to the video of Floyd's death was to defend the police officer—Votto recalls thinking, "Perhaps the man was resisting arrest? Maybe there is a story the video isn’t telling?"—but as time has passed, introspection has led him to the realization that his privilege has caused him to be ignorant about issues of racial injustice.

Votto describes coming up in the minor leagues and developing friendships with non-white players, though he says he was blind to the instances of racism he saw them endure.

"But I also witnessed glimpses of racism that should have opened my eyes to the realities of being a black man in America," Votto said. "My teammates, my friends, the ones that I shared great times with, faced prejudices that I never did and when they shared their experiences...I did not hear them."

Votto says he first learned about Floyd's killing when a Black teammate sent him the video. A day after he refused to watch the video, Votto finally did. The experience, he says, brought him to tears. He apologized to the teammate, and the two made amends.

His perspective has now shifted. Votto says it was his privilege that allowed him to cast aside Floyd's death in the first place, along with past glimpses of racism he's witnessed. In expressing his desire to avoid protests, arguments or challenges to friendships, Votto admits this is no longer possible.

"But I hear you now, and so that desire for normalcy is a privilege by which I can no longer abide. That privilege kept me from understanding the “why” behind Colin Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the national anthem. That privilege allowed me to ignore my black teammates’ grievances about their experiences with law enforcement, being profiled, and discriminated against.

"And that privilege has made me complicit in the death of George Floyd, as well as the many other injustices that blacks experience in the U.S. and my native Canada."

Finally, Votto described how he had recently finished reading Nelson Mandela's autobiography A Long Walk to Freedom. Though moved by Mandela's story of self-sacrifice, Votto said he failed to recognize the systemic racism that continues to exist three decades after the end of apartheid. Now, though, the resurgence of protests against racial injustice and police brutality following Floyd's killing have prompted what Votto called his "awakening," and he said he is prepared to use his voice to help.

"A week after I returned Mandela’s biography to the library shelf, I dismissed a black friend’s plea for support. Only now am I just beginning to hear. I am awakening to their pain, and my ignorance. No longer will I be silent."

Ahead of Sunday’s Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, the 40 cars pulled to a stop in front of the empty grandstands and shut off their engines so NASCAR President Steve Phelps could deliver a message over their radio sets.

HAMPTON, Ga. — Bubba Wallace donned a black T-shirt with the words “I Can’t Breathe” and NASCAR paused before Sunday’s Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway to acknowledge the country’s social unrest. The governing body vowed to do a better job of addressing racial injustice in the wake of George Floyd’s death.

During their warm-up laps, the 40 cars pulled to a stop in front of the empty grandstands and shut off their engines so NASCAR President Steve Phelps could deliver a message over their radio sets.

“Thank you for your time,” Phelps said. “Our country is in pain and people are justifiably angry, demanding to be heard. The black community and all people of color have suffered in our country, and it has taken far too long for us to hear their demands for change. Our sport must do better. Our country must do better.”

A black NASCAR official took a knee along pit road, mimicking a gesture used by protesters in tribute to former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

All 40 crews stood on the wall in front of their pit boxes.

“The time is now to listen, to understand and to stand against racism and racial injustice,” Phelps said. “We ask our drivers ... and all our fans to join us in this mission, to take a moment of reflection, to acknowledge that we must do better as a sport, and join us as we now pause and take a moment to listen.”

Wallace, the only African American driver in NASCAR’s top series, has been the sport’s most outspoken voice since Floyd died while in the custody of Minneapolis police, sparking massive protests in all 50 states and around the world demanding an end to law enforcement brutality against people of color.

Wallace’s T-shirt carried Floyd’s pleading words when an officer, identified as Derek Chauvin, pinned a knee on his neck for more than eight minutes while he was handcuffed. Chauvin and three other officers have been fired and charged in the incident, which followed the deaths of Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery.

Protesters have cited all three African American victims in their demands for social justice.

After Phelps spoke to the NASCAR drivers, they observed a 30-second moment of silence. Then, as the cars refired their engines and slowly pulled away for the green flag, the Fox broadcast cut to a video made by a number of Cup drivers, including Wallace and seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson, as well as retired star Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Several drivers also posted the video on their Twitter accounts, vowing to “listen and learn” from the protests that have rocked the nation. They vowed to “no longer be silent” and pledged to “work together to make real change.”

With its roots in the South and one-time embrace of Confederate symbols, NASCAR has a checkered racial history. The organization has launched diversity programs but still struggles to shake its reputation as a largely white sport.

During a shutdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic, NASCAR driver Kyle Larson was fired after casually uttering a racial slur while competing in a video racing game.

“We need to step up more than we ever have before,” said former Cup star Jeff Gordon, now a Fox broadcaster. “We are listening, we are learning and we are ready to change.”

Former Browns coach Hue Jackson said he wanted to sign quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2017, the season following his kneeling protests against police brutality and racial injustice.

Former Cleveland Browns coach Hue Jackson said he wanted to sign quarterback Colin Kaepernick ahead of the 2017 season.

In an interview with "The Really Big Show" on WKNR AM-850, Jackson described how he wanted to bring Kaepernick to Cleveland following the Browns' 1-15 season in 2016. Instead, the franchise selected quarterback DeShone Kizer in the second round of the 2017 draft and went on to finish with an 0-16 record the following season.

"I wanted him," Jackson said. "It just didn’t work out. Obviously, those things do have to work from a finance, draft, whatever all that is. And that wasn’t my decision."

Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since the 2016 season, when he first kneeled during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial injustice in America. He was selected in the second round of the 2011 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers and spent six years with the team before opting out of his contract and becoming a free agent.

In the interview, Jackson went on to say that he wanted to draft Kaepernick when he was coach of the Raiders in 2011. In addition, Jackson said he always thought Kaepernick "deserved an opportunity" in the NFL.

"He had tremendous success," Jackson said. "He is a guy who has stood for something. I think everybody is seeing exactly where he was coming from … I always thought Colin deserved an opportunity in this league, but he has to want to play. If he really wanted to play, I think he would have a chance again."

Jackson was fired during Cleveland's 2018 season and finished with a 3-36-1 record as head coach of the Browns.

Kaepernick's actions from 2016 have been brought to light once again after George Floyd, an unarmed 46-year-old Black man, was killed under police custody in Minneapolis, Minn. on May 25. Since then, peaceful protests have formed across the country related to police brutality and racial injustice.

On Friday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the league was wrong for "not listening to NFL players earlier" on racism and systematic oppression and encouraged all to "speak out and peacefully protest." The message was in response to a video from many NFL stars that called for the league to revise its initial statement.
