New on Sports Illustrated: Pelicans' Zion Williamson Returns to NBA Bubble
Pelicans star rookie Zion Williamson is back at Disney World a week after attending to a family emergency, the team announced Friday evening.
Pelicans star rookie Zion Williamson has returned to the NBA bubble, the team announced Friday evening.
Williamson is back at Disney World after leaving on July 16. The team announced last week that he left due to a family emergency.
“My family and I appreciate the love and respect that everyone showed us while we dealt with a private family matter," Williamson said in a statement Friday. "I‘m excited to rejoin my team in Orlando and look forward to getting back on the court with my teammates after quarantine.”
The team announced Friday that Williamson was tested daily for COVID-19 while away from the team and produced negative results on all of his tests.
According to NBA protocol, Williamson is required to quarantine immediately. According to ESPN's Andrew Lopez, the NBA hasn't announced how long Williamson's quarantine period will last, but that nevertheless his status for the team's July 30 opener could be up in the air even if he is cleared.
Williamson and the Pelicans arrived at the Walt Disney World Resort on July 8.
He missed the start of the 2019-20 season after undergoing surgery to repair his torn right lateral meniscus in late October 2019.
Williamson made his NBA debut in late January. He averaged 23.6 points and 6.8 rebounds in 19 games.
The Pelicans (28–36) enter the restart in 10th place in the Western Conference.
New Orleans will play the first game of the league's restart against the Jazz on July 30.

New on Sports Illustrated: Washington QB Alex Smith Cleared to Resume Full Football Activity
Smith hasn't played in the NFL since November 2018 after suffering a fractured tibia and fibula, injuries that were life-threatening after struggling with post-surgery infection.
Washington quarterback Alex Smith, who suffered a serious tibia and fibula fracture in November 2018 and hasn't played since, was cleared for full football activity on Friday, per ESPN's Stephania Bell.
Smith is now going through COVID-19 testing and, if cleared, will report to the team's facility on Monday. He will then undergo a physical before the team determines what his next steps will be for him to participate in training camp.
Smith has been training in Hawaii for the past few months. He underwent X-rays and a CT scan when he returned to Washington before finally being told by his team of doctors that the results were very encouraging.
"Everyone was in agreement that my bone was in a really good place," Smith told ESPN. "I had healed a lot. They said that given the combination of the rod and where I was with the healing process, I had zero limitations and could even resume some football activities.
"To hear them say that from a life standpoint, they wouldn't restrict me from doing anything -- I could go skiing or snowboarding tomorrow if I wanted -- then on top of that, to get the green light that I could practice, get contact, that I had healed up, that much was pretty wild to hear. I didn't know if I would ever hear those words."
Smith's road to recovery was daunting. On top of the fractures, he dealt with infection following his surgeries, which resulted in some gruesome details and even talk of amputation.
Now, Smith is focused on continuing his comeback and preparing himself for the season, which is slated to begin on time after the NFLPA voted to accept amendments to the current collective bargaining agreement.
"For me, all eyes are on practice," Smith said. "That's the next step. I have to go prove to myself and certainly to everybody else that I can go practice."

New on Sports Illustrated: Yankees, Nationals Kneel in Pregame 'Moment of Unity'
The complete Yankees and Nationals rosters both kneeled in a pregame "moment of unity" ahead of Thursday's Opening Day game.
The complete Yankees and Nationals rosters both kneeled in a pregame "moment of unity" ahead of Thursday's Opening Day performance of the national anthem.
As first reported earlier Thursday by The Athletic's Lindsey Adler, players lined up on the first and third baselines and held a lengthy piece of black fabric that traced around the diamond.
Per Adler, the display, which is described as “player-led,” is said to have been directed by Phillies outfielder Andrew McCutchen.
“This moment is important for all MLB players to unite and show support for one another as we begin the 2020 baseball season. Our league makeup is unique, with nearly one third of players being foreign-born,” McCutchen said in a statement to The Athletic. “No matter where we are from we are all facing battles for social justice and equality, the concerns of keeping our families and communities safe during times of a global pandemic, and facing the same challenges with the return to baseball. This is our time to stand together as one before we take the field as competitors.”
In the lead-up to the 2020 MLB season, a number of players across MLB have kneeled during the national anthem, including members of the Giants and Reds.
Giants manager Gabe Kapler was among those with the San Francisco organization who kneeled and he explained in a statement, in part, that "I told them that I wanted to use my platform to demonstrate my dissatisfaction with the way we've handled racism in our country. I wanted to demonstrate my dissatisfaction with our clear systemic racism in our country."
Just hours before the start of the 2020 regular season, the Major League Baseball Players Association reportedly approved an agreement with MLB to expand its postseason this year to 16 teams.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Nationals Park to open Thursday's contest.

New on Sports Illustrated: Dr. Anthony Fauci's First Pitch Was An Instant Classic
The 79-year-old Fauci, sporting a Washington Nationals mask, got some grief online for his Opening Day first pitch.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was fittingly selected to throw out the first pitch of the MLB season after it was delayed for months due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Unfortunately, it was a wild pitch.
You have to give the 79-year-old credit for trying to throw from the mound, rather than the grass as many do. Nevertheless, there were many jokes to be had.
There were some who were a bit more forgiving, though.
President Trump was featured in a pregame segment for an interview with Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera. Word will certainly get back to the Yankees fan-in-chief about Fauci's first pitch. What will he think about it?
Aw, who are we kidding?
