Dustin Johnson matched the low round Sunday with a 6-under 64 to build a five-shot lead in the Tour Championship, leaving him one round away from the FedEx Cup and its $15 million prize.

ATLANTA — Dustin Johnson watched his opening drive sail long and fall gently to the right, just like he imagined. So did the next drive. It was like that all day at East Lake, and the outcome was predictable.

Johnson is playing the best golf and looks tougher than ever to beat.

When he finished with a 10-foot birdie, Johnson matched the low round Sunday with a 6-under 64 to build a five-shot lead over Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele in the Tour Championship, leaving him one round away from the FedEx Cup and its $15 million prize.

“I’ve got a lot of confidence in everything I’m doing right now,” Johnson said.

A quick fix on the range the previous evening was all he needed to get straightened out. Johnson missed only three fairways, and not by much. He putted for birdie on all but three holes and made seven of them.

“He’s showcased what he can do,” Schauffele said. “If he does what he normally does, it’s going to be almost impossible to catch him.”

Normal these days for Johnson must be daunting for everyone else.

He was at 19-under par, making this his fourth consecutive start with at least a share of the 54-hole lead. He converted one of those into an 11-shot victory at the TPC Boston. He lost to a 65 by Collin Morikawa in the PGA Championship and on a 65-foot putt by Jon Rahm in a playoff last week at Olympia Fields.

“We’re going to need Dustin to throw us a bone and not have a good day,” said Rahm, who was six shots back.

Johnson knows better than anyone that it is not over. He had a six-shot lead in Shanghai three years ago and failed to win, though he had a new set of irons and was coming off a five-week break. He also had a five-shot lead at The Northern Trust two weeks ago and obliterated the course and the field to win by 11.

“If he hits the ball like everybody knows he can and the way he’s putting ... I haven’t seen him putt that well in a long time,” Harris English said. “It’s hard to stop.”

Only four players have a reasonable chance of catching him.

Schauffele, a big-game player who won the Tour Championship three years ago, dropped only one shot on the front nine and finished with a 10-foot birdie putt for a 67 that put him in the final group with Johnson.

Thomas missed a 16-inch par putt on the 10th hole that he carelessly went to tap in, bounced back with a 25-foot birdie putt on the toughest par three at East Lake and made two more birdies coming for a 66.

They were at 14 under.

“DJ is clearly playing well. It wasn’t easy today,” Thomas said. “It’s still East Lake. But anything can happen around this course. You can shoot 63 or 64 and you can shoot 73 or 74 very easily. I just need to hope that tomorrow is my 63 or 64.”

Rahm has had a wild week. He opened with a 65, followed with a 74 and bounced back with a 66. He played bogey-free and his round only felt better when he finished with two birdies.

“The one good thing I have going for me is we’re here to win, so tomorrow is a green light for everything,” Rahm said.

Morikawa rallied with five birdies on the back nine to salvage a rough start for a 67. He was seven behind.

Daniel Berger also had a 64, but he made up no ground on Johnson was remained nine behind. Also at 10-under was Sungjae Im, who played in the final group with Johnson and must have wondered what hit him. Im shot 72.

The FedEx Cup has been on Johnson’s mind ever since he squandered a great chance to win it in 2016.

He went into the final round that year tied for the lead and then could not find a fairway, closing with a 73. He still had a chance to win the FedEx Cup when it was based on points. Only one player could have beaten him that day and it was Rory McIlroy, who holed a shot from the fairway on the 16th for eagle and then won in a three-way playoff.

Johnson moves on from wins and losses, no matter how high or how crushing. Even so, he thinks about that day, mainly because the FedEx Cup is filled with big names and his is not among them yet.

“To be the FedEx Cup champion is something that I want to do. It’s something that I want on my resume when I quit playing golf,” he said. “Yeah, it means a lot to me. So yes, I do want to win this tournament. ... I had a chance to win it a few years ago. I couldn’t control winning by my golf. Tomorrow, I do.”

McIlroy will not be in the mix this year. He was walking off the 17th tee and looked back at Johnson heading to the 14th, a 512-yard par four and the toughest at East Lake. Johnson already was 10 shots ahead of him, and then smashed a drive down the fairway and made a 15-foot birdie putt.

McIlroy birdied the 17th to salvage a 70. He was 11 shots back.

Tom Jernstedt, a member of the Naismith Hall of Fame for his contributions to college basketball and the NCAA Tournament, has died.

INDIANAPOLIS — Tom Jernstedt, a member of the Naismith Hall of Fame for his contributions to college basketball and the NCAA Tournament, has died. He was 75.

The NCAA said Sunday Jernstedt died this weekend.

Nicknamed “Father of the Final Four,” Jernstedt has widely been credited with transforming the NCAA Tournament into the billion-dollar March Madness it has become today.

“A decade after his departure from the NCAA, Tom Jernstedt’s fingertips remain visible during March Madness and the Final Four,” NCAA senior vice president Dan Gavitt said in a statement. “His innovation and superb ability to develop relationships turned a basketball tournament into a three-week phenomenon that became a global event.”

A former back-up quarterback, Jernstedt worked his first Final Four in 1973 and helped push the growth of the NCAA Tournament from 25 teams to the 68, anything-can-happen bonanza held every spring.

Jernstedt helped the NCAA increase its television contract from just over $1 million to more than $10 billion when he left in 2011. He served as president of USA Basketball, was a member of the College Football Selection committee and was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame as a contributor in 2017.

“Tom Jernstedt was a humble and unsung steward of the game,” John L. Doleva, president and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame, said in a statement. “Under his direction, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament grew into a phenomenon that brings college basketball fans together on a global scale. He will forever be remembered as the Father of the Final Four and one of the most respected leaders in basketball.”

Jernstedt established himself as a team leader despite being a backup quarterback at Oregon from 1964-66 and went on to serve as the Ducks’ events manager. He joined the NCAA in 1972 and spent 38 years with the organization.

“Tom served as a friend and mentor to countless people in and around collegiate athletics, and I’m proud to be among that vast group of people,” Gavitt said. “His legacy within the NCAA and its membership, and his impact on the sport of college basketball, is eternal. We extend our deepest condolences to Tom’s family.”

The Tampa Bay Lightning advancing to the Eastern Conference finals is no surprise. The Lightning were one of the best teams in the league this season, and have been for many years.

This marks the fourth time in six seasons that they've reached the conference finals, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2015.

It's another story for the New York Islanders, who will face the Lightning in Game 1 on Monday in Edmonton.

The Islanders are in the NHL's final four for the first time since 1993, and as excited as they are about getting this far, there is still more work to do.

"I think you recognize and understand that you took another step. There's a bit of a celebration, but we understand that we're half way," Islanders coach Barry Trotz said. "We've won three playoff rounds (counting the qualifying round) and we're going to play a very good Tampa team here. They're focused and deep and we're going to have to come up with a way to try and get by them. I think our guys are up for the challenge. Our team has grown."

Tampa Bay has won both previous playoff meetings, the latest in 2016 in which they claimed a second-round series in five games. The Islanders, however, won two of the three clashes during the regular season.

Certainly, this series will be a contrast in styles. The Islanders rely on team defense and look to create offense via the counterpunch. The Lightning, who are also one of the best defensive clubs in the league, seem to apply the theory that the best defense is a great offense.

That said, the Islanders scored at least three goals in every contest during their seven-game series with the Flyers. They have averaged 3.38 goals per game since play resumed after the COVID-19 pandemic paused the league in March.

"We've had a pretty balanced scoresheet up and down our roster, contributions from the defense (on Saturday), every line getting in on it," Islanders forward Brock Nelson said. "Guys stepping up and making plays at the right time. We're doing good things to create some chances and capitalize on them. I think we've had that strategy and results for a couple of series now and that's part of the reason we're here today."

Both teams have moved from the Toronto hub to Edmonton for this round, and the fatigue factor may come into play for an Islanders' club that clinched its series on Saturday. The Lightning have been idle since last Monday after eliminating the Boston Bruins in five games.

"In practice, by imitating game-like situations, is the only way you can kind of stay ready," Tampa Bay forward Alex Killorn said. "You want to make sure in these days you get your rest just because that's definitely an advantage over teams that are playing. But you also don't want to lose that edge going forward, that edge that you had when you were playing every other day."

Tampa Bay does have a couple of impact players with injury issues going into the series.

Captain Steven Stamkos (lower body), who last played in February, has been ruled out of the series, head coach Jon Cooper said Sunday.

Reigning Hart Trophy recipient Nikita Kucherov sustained an undisclosed injury in the Lightning's series-clinching win against Boston. Kucherov, however, has been practicing in the interim and is expected to be available.

In the first battle between the Houston Rockets' small ball and the Los Angeles Lakers' more traditional lineup, small ball won.

But Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni and star James Harden were quick to caution that it's only one game.

The top-seeded Lakers will aim to even their Western Conference semifinals series against the fourth-seeded Rockets on Sunday night at ESPN's Wide World of Sports complex near Orlando. The Rockets, meanwhile, will try to push for a 2-0 series advantage.

"The playoffs (are) about making adjustments," Harden said after Game 1. " ... We've got to be even better in Game 2, because the principles and the schemes and all that stuff will ramp up, so guys gotta be even more engaged."

Houston pulled away in Friday night's Game 1, outscoring the Lakers 27-18 in the fourth quarter to lead by as many as 19 points in a comfortable victory.

The Rockets continued to be paced by their committed, scrappy defense that, entering Saturday, rated as the NBA's best during the postseason.

Houston held the Lakers to 97 points, 42.2 percent from the field and 11-of-38 from 3-point distance. The rebounding numbers were even (41-41), a big win considering the Rockets are so undersized. Houston swiped 13 steals and limited the Lakers to 19 free throws (Houston had 27).

Perhaps most important, the Rockets scored 27 points off of 15 Lakers turnovers.

"Versus a team that's a 100-meter dash team, you cannot turn the ball over like that," James said. "It's just that simple. It starts with myself being the primary ballhandler and it trickles down to everyone else. So we gotta be a complete turnaround going into Game 2."

James compared the Rockets' you-can't-simulate-this speed to "The Greatest Show on Turf" iterations of the NFL's St. Louis Rams. Houston certainly did not look like a team that had just wrapped a hard-fought, seven-game first-round series against Oklahoma City two nights prior.

The Lakers, meanwhile, perhaps displayed a bit of rust following a six-day layoff after needing just five games to beat the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round.

Offensively, Harden played like a former MVP and perennial All-Star in Game 1. He scored 25 of his 36 points in the first half, and got to the free-throw line 11 times before the break.

D'Antoni said late Friday that Rockets reserve forward Danuel House, who left Game 1 with a head injury, "seems to be fine" and that he is "hoping (House will) be ready to go on Sunday."

The Lakers' All-Star duo of James (20 points, eight rebounds, seven assists) and Davis (25 points, 14 rebounds, three blocks, three steals) largely carried the load Friday, but also combined to commit seven turnovers.

The Lakers, of course, also lost Game 1 to Portland before winning four consecutive contests to close out that series. That's why D'Antoni and Harden were quick to caution that Friday was just one game.

But Harden said his team's confidence is high. He also rejects the "small-ball" label.

"I don't know why people keep saying we're small," Harden said. "I don't care if you're 7 feet (tall). If you don't have heart, it doesn't matter. If you don't have 'dog' in you, it doesn't matter.

"We've got guys that are able to switch and play different positions and guard different guys on the court."

New on Sports Illustrated: Quick turnaround for Stars-Golden Knights in conference finals

The Dallas Stars and Vegas Golden Knights have little time to enjoy their dramatic Game 7 victories Friday.

The two teams face a quick turnaround and begin their best-of-seven Western Conference finals on Sunday night in Edmonton, with the winner earning a berth in the Stanley Cup Final.

Third-seeded Dallas, eliminated in a 2-1 double overtime loss in Game 7 in the second round to eventual Stanley Cup champion St. Louis last season, advanced to the conference final for the first time since 2008 with a 5-4 overtime victory over No. 2 seeded Colorado on Friday. A few hours later, Vegas avoided blowing a 3-1 series lead for the second straight postseason when it defeated Vancouver 3-0.

Joel Kiviranta, in because regular forward Andrew Cogliano was deemed unfit to play, scored the game-winner at 7:24 of overtime for the Stars to become just the seventh player in NHL history and the first rookie ever to score a hat trick in a Game 7.

"This is the moment you dream about when you are a young kid," said Kiviranta, the 24-year-old Finnish forward who had one goal in 11 regular season games. "Today was the day I played the first Game 7 in my life, and I didn't know what to expect."

When he arrived back to a cheering locker room after doing a TV interview, Kiviranta then delivered an assist to the Stars' marketing department with this comment to loud cheers from the squad: "We're not going home!"

"Obviously we were in the same situation last year and came out on the wrong end of it," Dallas captain Jamie Benn said. "And this year it's nice to get that win and move on."

Kiviranta didn't play in any of the three previous meetings between the two teams this season. Dallas took the first one at home on Nov. 25, 4-2, while Vegas won the second one on a Max Pacioretty overtime goal, 3-2, on Dec. 13 in Las Vegas. The Golden Knights also rallied from a 3-1 third period deficit with three goals in the span of 5:02 to pull out a 5-3 victory in the opening game of the Qualifying Round on Aug. 3 in Edmonton.

Shea Theodore's power-play goal from the left point past a double screen by William Karlsson and Mark Stone with 6:08 left in the third period snapped a 0-0 tie and also an amazing 98-save streak by Vancouver backup goalie Thatcher Demko to give Vegas the Game 7 win in the second round. The Golden Knights sealed it with a pair of empty-net goals.

"I thought it was way more than 98 to be honest," said Theodore. "I thought it was a couple hundred. He's a great goalie."

Robin Lehner finished with just 16 saves for his record-tying third shutout of the series but one of them was a diving, highlight-reel glove save on Brock Boeser midway through the second period that may have been the biggest stop of the tournament so far.

"I know you say I can't save backdoor shots, but the big man can move when he wants to," Lehner, nicknamed the Panda, said.

This is the second time in their three seasons that the No. 1 seeded Golden Knights have advanced to the Western Conference final. They knocked off the Winnipeg Jets in five games in their inaugural season in 2018 before losing to the Washington Capitals in five games in the Stanley Cup Final.

Vegas could be without fourth line forward and team enforcer Ryan Reaves for the start of the series. Reaves has a Saturday appointment with NHL Department of Safety after garnering a match penalty for his head shot on Tyler Motte in the second period. He was ejected from the Game 7 win for the hit.

Authentic was named the winner of the 146th running of the Kentucky Derby, beating out heavy favorite Tiz The Law.

Authentic won the 146th running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday in Louisville, Ky., holding off pre-race favorite Tiz The Law down the stretch.

The colt was piloted by jockey John Velazquez, who took home his fifth Triple Crown race and third Kentucky Derby. Authentic was trained by Bob Baffert, who has now won the Derby six times.

This year's race marked the third time the Derby has been held outside the month of May, and the first since 1945. It was also the first Derby run in the month of September, and the first time the Derby was not the first leg of the triple crown since 1931.

This year's Triple Crown led off with the Belmont Stakes, which Tiz The Law won by 3 3/4 lengths. The last leg—the Preakness Stakes—will run on Oct. 3. Tiz The Law had won four races this year, and his only career loss heading into Saturday came at the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs in November, where he finished third.

Authentic's victory was his fifth career win and first appearance at the Derby. Jockey Velazquez has now won with three different horses and three different trainers.
