Thai police turn water cannon on defiant protesters

BANGKOK - Thai police fired stinging liquid from water cannon at thousands of protesters on Friday in the most violent escalation of three months of demonstrations against the government of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, a former junta leader. Protesters, defying a government ban on gatherings for a second day in Bangkok, pushed back against helmeted police who advanced with batons and riot shields. In scenes resembling Hong Kong protests, demonstrators held umbrellas against the water. Youth-led protests have grown into the biggest challenge in years to a political establishment dominated by military figures and the Royal Palace of King Maha Vajiralongkorn. “The dictatorial government is using violence to disperse the people’s movement,” said Tattep Ruangprapaikitseree, one of the protest leaders. He was arrested hours later, along with six other protesters, police said.

New on Sports Illustrated: SEC Alters Schedule as Programs Deal With COVID-19 Postponements

The SEC has moved around six games following the postponements of the Vanderbilt-Missouri and Florida-LSU games that were originally scheduled for Oct. 17.

On Friday, the SEC announced a bevy of changes to the conference's schedule after the postponement of two games that were originally slated for Oct. 17.

The postponements of the Vanderbilt-Missouri and Florida-LSU games that were supposed to be played on Saturday necessitated a re-shuffling of the deck. The changes are as follows:

  • Vanderbilt at Missouri: Moved from Oct. 17 to Dec. 12. Time and network are TBD
  • LSU at Florida: Moved from Oct. 17 to Dec. 12. Time and network are TBD
  • South Carolina at LSU: Remains on Oct. 24, changes time to 7 p.m. ET on ESPN
  • Georgia at Kentucky: Moves from Oct. 24 to Oct. 31 at 12 p.m. ET on SEC Network
  • Missouri at Florida: Moves from Oct. 24 to Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m. ET on SEC Network Alternate
  • Kentucky at Missouri: Moves from Oct. 31 to Oct. 24 at 4 p.m. ET on SEC Network

The announcement comes on the same day the SEC reportedly fined three schools—Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Tennessee—for failing to adhere to the conference's COVID-19 protocols. Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork confirmed the Aggies' fine to Sports Illustrated's Ross Dellenger, while sources said Ole Miss and Tennessee were also disciplined.

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey had previously sent a memo to schools last week saying their conference revenue distribution would be docked $100,000 for each week that they did not follow the protocols.

"Do not relax—and do not let those around you relax—because of a few weeks of success," Sankey reportedly wrote in the memo.

New on Sports Illustrated: Deion Sanders's Contract: Jackson State to Pay 'Coach Prime' $300,000 Salary With Season-Ticket Sales Incentives

Deion Sanders’s contract with Jackson State is a four-year, $1.2 million deal that includes an automatic extension for an eight-win season.

Deion Sanders’s contract with Jackson State is a four-year, $1.2 million deal that includes at least $120,000 in annual performance incentives and an automatic extension for an eight-win season.

The former NFL star cornerback and Hall of Famer was announced last month as the new coach at the SWAC school in Mississippi, landing his first college job in a stunning move that took America by storm. Sports Illustrated obtained his contract through a public records request.

Sanders, 53, is to be paid an annual salary of $300,000 as part of a contract that begins Dec. 1 of this year and runs to Dec. 15, 2024. Before taking over at JSU, Sanders is completing his job as the offensive coordinator of the Dallas-area Trinity Christian Academy, where his son is a highly recruited starting quarterback.

The university would owe Sanders the full, remaining amount of his contract if they fire him within the first year of his employment. After Dec. 15, 2021, Jackson State could fire Sanders for a price tag of $300,000. If Sanders were to leave JSU, he’d owe the school 50% of his remaining salary.

Sanders’ salary is on par with other FCS head coaches, but it would put him last among FBS public school coaches. However, the contract is loaded with incentives. He receives $25,000 for each win over an FBS team, gets $10,000 for a SWAC division title and $30,000 for a conference championship. If his team reaches the Celebration Bowl—a season-ending game pitting the SWAC and MEAC champion—he’d receive $50,000 for a bowl win.

Sanders can also get bonuses for ticket sales. If a game draws more than 30,000 fans, he gets 10% of all sales after the 30,000. He receives 10% of all season ticket revenue after the first 10,000 are purchased. If JSU changes conferences, he gets $100,000.

There are several ways to trigger automatic extensions to his contract, including an eight-win regular season, which gets him one extra year. If the athletic director who hired him, Ashley Robinson, leaves Jackson State, Sanders gets a one-year extension. If JSU leaves the SWAC, he gets two years added to his deal.

Olympics: French prosecutors believe Singaporean Tan Tong Han played a role in bribing voters for Tokyo 2020

TOKYO/NEW YORK - Dentsu Inc donated more than US$6 million (S$8.1 million) to Tokyo's successful campaign to host the 2020 Olympics, according to bank records seen by Reuters, and it lobbied members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on behalf of the city, according to three people involved in the lobbying. The activities created a potential conflict of interest for the Japanese advertising company, which had a separate contract with the IOC to market the games. To assist in its effort, Dentsu endorsed the hiring of a Singaporean consultant by the Tokyo Olympic campaign. The company's role is laid out in transcripts of interviews company executives gave to investigators appointed by the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) to examine whether there had been any wrongdoing in the course of Tokyo's campaign. French prosecutors investigating corruption in global sports suspect that consultant, Tan Tong Han, played a role in bribing Olympic voters for Tokyo in 2013, according to two people familiar with the French probe. Tan did not respond to requests for comment from Reuters.

Taiwan says Hong Kong warned off a civilian flight heading to Taipei-controlled island

TAIPEI - Hong Kong air traffic controllers on Thursday (Oct 15) warned off a Taiwanese civilian flight flying to Taiwan-controlled islands in the South China Sea, forcing it to turn back, the island's government said. The incident, which comes at a time of rising regional tensions, occurred as a UNI Air charter flight from southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung to the Pratas Islands was approaching Hong Kong's flight information region, Taiwan's Civil Aeronautics Administration said. Hong Kong air traffic controllers told the captain there were "dangerous activities" happening below 26,000ft and the aircraft could not enter, so for safety reasons he decided to turn back, the administration said in a statement. Hong Kong had not issued a prior notice warning of activities that could affect flights, it added. Hong Kong's Civil Aviation Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The weekly charter flights to the Pratas mostly carry Taiwan government and coastguard personnel and are not open for ordinary travellers to book.
