In 1959, Melbourne City Council approved Australia’s first modern American-style international five-star hotel to be built on the site of the former Eastern Market. Opened in 1962 its guest list included the Beatles, Judy Garland, Rock Hudson, John Wayne and Marlene Dietrich.
