JAKARTA - Bali has taken a big step to curb pollution in its waters, enacting a ban on single-use plastics including shopping bags, styrofoam, and straws.

Bali Governor Wayan Koster announced the ban on Monday (Dec 24), and expressed hope that the policy would lead to a 70 per cent decline in Bali's marine plastics within a year.

The new policy carries a six-month grace period dating from Dec 21, when it was signed and took effect.

A middle-aged woman suspected of leading a group of teenage boys - one of them her son - on a pair of robberies in one of Hong Kong's poorest neighbourhoods was charged on Christmas Day.

The 47-year-old woman, thought to be one of the boys' mother, was linked to two alleged robberies on December 16 and December 17.

Thai prisoner electrocuted during botched jailbreak

BANGKOK - A Thai prisoner died early Tuesday (Dec 25) after being electrocuted by high-voltage barbed wire as he attempted to escape, police said.

Wiwat Aksorsom, 32, broke free from his cell just after midnight along with two other prisoners and tried to scale the 6m walls of his prison in southern Surat Thani province.

But he accidentally touched the electrified barbed wire cresting the prison walls killing him instantly, Colonel Wanchai Palawan, superintendent of Chaiya district police, told AFP.
