Madhubani or Mithila paintings are one of the traditional paintings of India and are known for their bright colors, symbolism, simplicity, and beauty. 

The symbol used in this painting have their specific meaning. Fish is a symbol of fertility and abundance and is considered one of the many incarnations of Lord Vishnu. 

The people of Mithila believe that God created the sea and hence the fish appeared, the first living creatures on earth.
